Colossal Squid Captured off Coast of Antarctica
A Colossal Squid weighing approximately 990 pounds was captured earlier this week by fishermen who were fishing for Patagonia Toothfish.
This 39 foot long Colossal Squid fought back for two hours before being captured. Once actually measured, if this squid does weigh in at 990 pounds, it will be 300 pounds heavier than the largest previous speciman. The squid was frozen and going to be transported to the New Zealand national museum for study.
It is easy to imagine where the legend of the Kraken came from after seeing one of these Colossal squid! Colossal Squid are related to the Giant Squid, but grow to be much heavier.
It is hard to imagine just how large a 990 pound, 39 feet long creature is, but visualization can assist: if calamari was made from this Colossal Squid, the rings would be as large as tractor tires! Holy calamari, Batman!
