Haiku Carnival with Prizes

Please note this is a sticky post and will be at the top of my blog until September 30th. Just scroll down for my more recent entry.

I love Haiku. I was introduced to this form of poetry when I was in high school. Previous to that I mostly wrote free form poetry, but once I learned of Haiku, I switched to that. To me, Haiku is powerful in its beauty and simplicity.

If you are not sure what Haiku is you can check out the Wikipedia definition. Basically, Haiku is three lines of poetry. The first line has five syllables, the second has seven syllables, and the thrid has five syllables. Traditional Haiku revolve around nature, modern haiku cover all kinds of topics. Personally, I prefer haiku that deals with the natural world, though I have written some that are modern.

Here is another good website I found with lots of information.

So here is what I would like to do...

I would like to read your haiku! And I would like to share mine. Mr. Linky is below and just waiting for you to share links to your Haiku. And to sweeten the pot, I will have a random drawing on September 30th. Then I will award four prizes to people who have linked up to my Haiku Carnival. I am sorry, but I can only send the prizes to U.S. addresses, but if you live overseas and want to share your haiku, I would love to have you link up!

So here are 18 of my haiku:

A lavendar bloom
cloaked in drops of morning dew
bows in reverence...

***

Synchronicity:
nature reigns the universe
correlating all.

***

Black ribbon unfolds
before me, leading me to
exotic new lands.

***

Colors bursting forth
bringing smiles to passersby
spring and hope abound.

***

Tiny suns bursting
forth from a canopy of
green: Dandelions.

***

Surprise arctic winds
carressing tepid waters
giving birth to steam.

***

Moonbeams capering
over dewy fields, chasing
creatures of the night.

***

Playing peek-a-boo
with the stars, gliding swiftly
between clouds: the moon.

***

On the ridge above,
leaves rustle, rocks slide; stillness.
looking: I see deer.

***
Babbling brook, laughing
while winding its crystal clear
way through quiet hills.

***

Quivering young wings
preparing to unfold and
attempt their first flight.

****

Fragile green trembling
under its cold coat of white:
winters' kiss goodbye.

***

Within each heart, a
flower grows, which once mature
blossoms eternal.

***
When we parted, the
mountains crumbled, the oceans
died and the skies wept.

***

Like unfurling rose
petals reaching for the warm
sun, our love blossoms.

***

Time: an abstraction
in which humans claim their worth
to the Universe.

***

Flying over a
valley of clouds, an eagle
surveys his domain.

***

Flowers bloom as peace
descends upon sunken land
Serenity reigns.

***

Here are the prizes that 4 lucky winners will get! These books are all brand new and you can either keep them for yourselves or give them for gifts this upcoming holiday season!

I Need Your Help for a New Blog Name

When I set up my blog at Homeschoolblogger.com, I chose the name Home Sweet Home. When I decided to get my own domain name, I decided I should go for a different title as that was a bit 'trite'. I hate coming up with titles.

I chose "Yesterday's Hopes: The Blog" because my initial intent was to have other pages off of my domain name. There would be "Yesterday's Hopes: The Store," etc. My store name and 'persona' on eBay is Yesterday's Hopes. I was trying to create a name for myself linking my blog and my eBay store. But I am no longer sure that I want to go that route.

Well, I don't really like the title of my blog, so I want to change it. But I would like your input. Coming up with titles is very hard for me. It's just something I don't have a knack for.

Here are some ideas that I have. I would appreciate your input or if you have something you like better, then I will go for it. Let me know what you think. (they are in alphabetical order).

Penny Stacking

It turns out that costs the government more to make a penny than a penny is worth...so why do we keep making them?

Well there is the old saying...a penny saved is a penny earned...

Or maybe it is because when we save up enough pennies, they can be turned into dollars.

But, i think the reason we keep making pennies is because there are people who have a talent with them! Check it out!

And then there are some made with poker chips...my kids love the Nintendo one. I love the colors in the bottom one!

Piano Recital and Centerfest

Today was a full one. We must have been tired as we all slept in until 9. That is a rare occurence around here. Today was clean out the rabbit cage day. So Katrina and I took care of that. We got the rabbits fed and then we had breakfast and attended to a few odds and ends chores. I also made bean salad for lunch at church tomorrow. About 11, I started working on Katrina...first we had to find just the right outfit, then I had to detangle her hair...a long and tedious chore. Her hair is long and wavy and even if you comb it often, it still seems to get tangled up...We finally got her looking all beautiful and then I got dressed and we all headed to town. Today was Katrina's first pulbic performance on the piano. The Central Virgina Music Teacher Association has an annual "World's Longest Recital" performance at the local mall. It is all part of the month long Kaleidoscope festival in Lynchburg. This recital begins at 9 am and goes until 4 pm and different studios from all over the area come and their piano students play. Our time slot was 1:00-1:30. Katrina played her duet with the piano teacher and bowed beautifully at the end to our great applause! Jack had two pieces, one was a duet and one was alone. He also did a fantastic job! Then we left the mall and split up. Daniel and Katrina headed off for a few hours of Daddy/daughter time. Jack and I headed towards Bedford for Centerfest (a huge annual event with lots of vendors, music and people). Daniel and Katrina enjoyed an ice cream cone at Cold Stone Creamery, then came home and watched Zoom and printed out pictures from today's recital. Jack and I were signed up to man our youth group's bake sale booth from 3-5. The youth are raising money to send 8 kids to Go Tell Camp at Liberty University next summer. We got there about an hour early so Jack and I walked around and took in the sights. There was definitely a lot going on! From 3-4:30, Jack took money and manned the booth. At the end of the day, we made over $400.00. That was awesome! It has been a good family day!

What Is It?

It's Mothra! No....
It's an alien from another planet! No....
It's a new form of Rorschach! No....It's....

It's a CT image of the human nose!!!!!

Wow, bet you would never have guessed that one! For more cool images, head over to National Geographic and see the other 4 best Science Images of 2007!

See-Through Frog Bred in Japan

Did you have to dissect a frog in high school biology? I did. I didn't mind it so much, though I wasn't crazy about the smell. Nowadays there are much more civilized frog dissection options. There are computer programs where children can virtually dissect a frog. There are plastic frog kits where children can have a hands on approach to frog dissection without actually killing a live frog. Now the Japanese have come up with a see through frog!!!!

From National Geographic:

September 28, 2007—For high school students everywhere, this revealing amphibian may be a cut above regular frogs.

That's because the see-through frog does not require dissection to see its organs, blood vessels, and eggs.

Masayuki Sumida, a professor at the Institute for Amphibian Biology at Japan's Hiroshima University, bred the frog to be a humane learning tool.

"You can watch organs of the same frog over its entire life, as you don't have to dissect it," Sumida told the news agency Agence France-Presse. The scientist announced his research last week at an academic meeting.

Dissecting animals for science has sparked controversies worldwide, even prompting some companies to create computer simulations as cruelty-free alternatives.

Researchers bred the sheer creature—a type of Japanese brown frog—for two recessive genes that make it pale.

Though not yet patented, the frog is the first four-legged, see-through animal to be bred by scientists. Some fish species are also clear.

Only 1 in 16 frogs end up see-through, and Sumida's team has not yet figured out how to pass on the transparent trait to offspring.

Mayonnaise Jar and 2 Cups of Coffee

I don't know if this story has made its way into your inbox, but I think it illustrates something we should all keep in mind. May God bless you with a life full of golf balls!

When things in your life seem
almost too much to handle,
when 24 Hours in a day is not enough,
remember the mayonnaise jar
and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class
and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, wordlessly,
he picked up a very large
and empty mayonnaise jar
and proceeded to fill it with golf balls

He then asked the students
if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles
and poured them into the jar.
He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open
areas between the golf balls.

He then asked
the students again
if the jar was full..
They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand
and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full.

The students responded
with an unanimous
"yes."

The professor then produced
two cups of coffee from under the table
And poured the entire contents
into the jar, effectively
filling the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor,
as the laughter subsided,
"I want you to recognize that
this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things -
God, family, children, health,
friends, and Favorite passions --
things that if everything else was lost
and only they remained,
your life would still be full.

The pebbles are the other things that matter
like your job, house, and car.

The sand is everything else --
the small stuff.

"If you put the sand into the jar first,"
he continued,
"there is no room for
the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.

If you spend all your time
and energy on the small stuff,
you will never have room for
the things that are
important to you.

So...
Pay attention to the things
that are critical to your happiness.

Play With your children.
Take time to get medical checkups.
Take your partner out to dinner.
Play another 18.

There will always be time
to clean the house
and fix the disposal.

"Take care of the golf balls first --
the things that really matter.
Set your priorities.
The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand
and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled.
"I'm glad you asked".

It just goes to show you that no matter how full
your life may seem, there's always room for
a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

"Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle."

Cloud Warriors, Bird Vision, Pharoah Temple, Mammoth Hair, and Polynesian Sailors

Here are some interesting stories from National Geographic:

80 Cloud Warrior Skeletons were found in a fort in Peru. These bodies look like they were left where they fell which leaves current historians, archeaologists and scientists trying to figure out if they died from violent acts or disease. This find will hopefully give tons of new information into a culture we know relatively little about.

Birds Can 'See' Magnetic Field - recent studies are helping to narrow down just how birds are able to find their way during migration.

Ancient Pharaoh Temple Discovered Inside Egypt Mosque. Parts of a temple dating to the reign of pharaoh Ramses II have been discovered inside a mosque in Luxor, Egypt, officials report. Experts restoring the historic mosque uncovered sections of columns, capitals, and elaborately inscribed reliefs from one of the ancient temple's courtyards built around 1250 B.C. This is liable to cause issues because the newly exposed reliefs contain representations of humans and animals, which are forbidden inside mosques, the experts said.

Mammoth Hair Yields Ancient DNA, Study Says - Some mammoth remains taken from permafrost include preserved muscle tissue and hair. Previous techniques have allowed researchers to extract DNA from the ancient muscle and bone, but the process can take years. This can pave the way for better and faster genetic studies of other ancient animals. I can't help but wonder if it is also paving the way for Mammoths to be brought back to Earth!

Early Polynesians Sailed Thousands of Miles for Trade. Study of tools and their origins is providing support to Hawaiian oral traditions about canoe journeys over the vast southeastern Pacific.

Mail Call

I am really getting spoiled here! Three days of fun mail! I'll go into withdrawal when the fun stops! Today I received Scream Free Parenting by Hal Edward Runkel. I got it from a contest at The Mommy Spot

I can't wait to read it!

Bits and Pieces of Daily Living

I have had three interesting observations/moments in the last few days that I thought I would record here for posterity.

1. on Wednesday I went out and worked on the pool some. I have been busy with other things and have ignored it, so I went out, added some water, did the chemical thing and checked the filter. I wanted to refill the air ring around the top, but coudn't find the air pump. I moved it when we cleaned up the Suburban to sell it (it acts as our moving storage shed). Now I can't remember where I moved it to. Gotta hate that. Well, yesterday morning, the kids were taking mail to the mailbox and informed me that the pool and lost 1/2 of its water! I asked if this was an April Fool's joke, but it wasn't. Apparently since the air ring is low on air, the water overcame the side of the pool and about 1/2 of the water poured out...GRRRR!!!!

2. I am a William and Mary alumni. One of the many things that always meant so much to me about attending that wonderful school was the history there. The steps and bricks are literally warped in the middle from decades and centuries of footsteps...well, my laptop computer is going on three years old and I noticed this week that it too is showing the signs of my constant use. There is a worn spot on my mouse pad and on the left click button. The 'm' and 'n' letters on my computer are completely worn away. And where my wrists rest on the lap top while I type, the plastic is smooth. So like the steps of William and Mary, my laptop too is showing signs of steady use.

3. Today as I got out of the shower and was towelling my hair dry, one of my earrings popped out. I didn't have my glasses on and I am very nearsighted. I picked up the cameo earring and what I thought was the back of the earring. As I went to put the back on to the post, I realized it wasn't the back of my earring, but a crumb of some sort...guess it is time to clean the house:)

First People of America Website

I have been busy workig on getting my Bison and Hummingbird ebooks ready for my month-long promotion/charity/prize event that starts on October 1st. These books I had actually researched and written a few years ago. So in order to turn them from a print manuscript into ebook form, I had do the layout and verify that all of my links were still working and I had to find pictures. Well, I hit a real treasure trove when I ran across the First People website. Not only did I find all of the Bison photos I needed (and they were fine with me using them), but there is so much information on this website, that I have spent some time perusing!

I have an intersting heritage. On my father's side I get German and Native American. On my mother's side, I get English, Irish, and Scottish. The Native American heritage has always been what has fascinated me the most(perhaps because so many in my dad's family have the Native American look about them - my great grandmother was a full-blooded Indian). At any rate, any time I see a chance to learn more about Native Americans, I take it.

Whether you just have an interest or you are teaching your children about Native Americans, you are going to love this website! There are quotes, legends, photos, artwork, news articles, treaty information, poems, prayers, and much, much more!

And the eyes to see.

AAAGGGHHHHH!!!!!

I don't watch a lot of regular TV shows. We watch SciFi Friday when the shows are new and I hear the news because DH watches it, but that's really about it. I do enjoy movies but other than that, I just don't have time for TV. If I am lucky, I might watch 4 or 5 movies a week.

A few weeks ago, I saw a preview in the movied theater for The Bionic Woman. They are making a new series out of a show that I loved as a child. Jamie Sommers was my hero! I wasn't sure if I would like this show, but I put it on my calendar to remind me to watch it. I got all of my chores done, I am set up here in the living room and the satellite signal goes haywire about 2 minutes into the show. This is a cosmic injustice! One show...I just wanted to watch one show...mostly to see if they would totally butcher the whole idea...

So I have hit the reset button and it is now 90% complete. If the signal doesn't come through, then we are going to pull out a one of my DVD's from the original series and we are going to watch that. Two years ago, my husband purchased me the best present ever. He got me the complete collection of both the Six Million Dollar Man and Bionic Woman series and the movies for Christmas. I still haven't finished watching them all, though I absolutely love the gift.

Well, the reboot seems to have worked...of course, I have now missed about 10 minutes of the show...but I think I can pick it up...off to watch now...

Baboon Gangs Terrorize Suburban South Africa

Have you ever watched The Planet of The Apes? Do you remember the shock you felt at the end of the first movie when Charlton Heston discovers the head of the Statue of Liberty and realizes he is on Earth and that mankind destroyed themselves and brought about a society where Apes and Chimps ruled the world?

In South Africa, they must be wondeirng if they are seeing the precursor to primate supremacy. According to National Geographic conflicts between baboons and humans in the suburbs of prosperous Cape Town have gotten so bad that monitoring teams have been deployed to keep the animals away

Apparently, the baboons are not afraid of people and have become quite adept at opening doors. They are slipping into cars and homes. They steal and threaten humans. As if this conflict wasn't enough, there is also a rift between the pro-Baboon and anti-Baboon factions.

You should go to the National Geographic website and check out the video that shows the baboons and their capabilities. You will be amazed!

Rare Albino Ratfish Captured

National Geographic is one of my favorite sources for unusual animal news and photos! Check out this unique Albino Ratfish that was caught this summer during a marine survey in Washington's Puget Sound. It is the first albino fish ever spotted by local scientists.

The ratfish gets its name from its long pointy tail and its rodentlike teeth that crush up clams and other prey lurking in the mud.

Normally a ratfish is brown with white spots which help act as camoflage (see photo below). It was amazing to find this Albino Ratfish alive as it's light color would have made it a beacon for all predators in the area. Unfortunately, the Albino Ratfish died shortly after capture.

Mail Call

Today was a fun mail day. I received two fun packages in the mail.

First I opened a package from Emily at Subu, Inc. Inside was a coupon off of my next purchase from Dragon in Knots and information about Heart and Soul Designs Hand Made Jewelry and Trevor Luckman Photography. But the true prize was the homemade wrist cuff for my daughter. She is thrilled because it has a pink ribbon, it sparkles and the fifteen year old neighbor who she adores wears wrist cuffs!

Then there was a free sample of Shania's new Starlight perfume: From the package: Shania Starlight....inspired by a shimmering western sky. Infused with the glamour that takes you from day to night. Experience the romance sophistication of this sparkling floral fragrance with hints of freesia and star magnolia. This romantic perfume is going on my Christmas list this year!

And while I was writing this post, the UPS man arrived with two books for me from Harper Collins to review. I can't wait to share them with you all!

What a delightful mailbox day!

A Moment of Calm

Do you have times in your life when it is so chock full of stuff, you are literally going from event to event, duty to duty, chore to chore without a moment to think what you are doing? The adrenaline if flowing, you are in top notch form and you are getting tons of stuff done! I am sure you know the feeling. I have been like that for the last few weeks. We are putting together a neighborhood wide yardsale (and I am the organizier, so I created the signs and sent the ad to the paper).

I am the owner of my high school reunion yahoo site. When it was time for our 20th reunion, we literally threw it together in about 3 months. This is amazing considering that part of throwing that together was contacting 150 classmates! Well, the 25th reunion is coming up in 2009 and the 50 of us that are still in touch, want to get an early start, so emails have been flying like crazy. As the person in charge of contacting people, I have been trying to decide the best approach so that I don't have to go through all the names and call them one by one again!

Then there was getting together the stuff we needed to apply for assistance while Daniel continues to look for work. Also, trying to figure out how to stretch what few dollars we have left the furthest possible.

Then there is the company that I write Ebay Ads for. Normally I do about 35 ads a week.

Then there is the new thing I am doing which involves writing 2-5 paid post a day (and for each paid post, I write one post from me).

Then there was the fact that I was working to get my other two books transformed into Ebooks. Which involved typing them in from the hard copy, then laying them out, then finding photos and putting them in and then trying to translate them from publisher into PDF files (I have already blogged about that), and working to get it already for my big launch on October first.

Then there is the cleaning, homeschooling, getting groceries, reading other people's blogs, fundraiser for the upcoming piano recital, finding a new church, trying to sell our Suburban and a few other big ticket items (which necessitates calling in ads).

So, I have been rolling merrily along and getting by on maybe 6 hours of sleep a night when suddenly, I realize I am ahead of the game. Things have kind of come to a screeching halt!

1. I am ready for the Yard Sale. The signs are made, the ads are sent, the items are gathered to sell. All I have to do is put up the signs next week.

2. After sorting through tons of suggestions, I have sent ads to three local papers and for the next month, all I have to do is answer phone calls and get people to sign up for the yahoo group.

3. I applied for assistance on Friday. Now it is just the waiting game.

4. VaBay is having a slow week...I have only done 2 ads this whole week, by now normally I have done 20-25. They just haven't had any ads for me to write.

5. I am still doing the paid posts each day, but it's not so bad with so much of my other time freed up.

6. With the extra time I had this past weekend and help from DH, my ebooks are ready for my big promotion!

7. Okay, this stuff is ongoing, but overall, I am sitting here feeling like I am not doing something because I have been running in high gear for the last couple of weeks. And I am faced with this dilemma...do I try to get ahead on some other items (like cleaning), or do I sit back, put my feet up, read a book and get ready for the next onslaught:)

Reviews of Freebies

In the last few weeks I have started receiving some freebie products. I thought I would take a moment and share what I thought of them.

1. From Simply Nutrilite I received a cherry and almond nutrition bar. Let me tell you that thing was yummy! And good for me at the same time! You can't beat that. It came in the mail in a triangular shaped box. When I opened the box, I loved what was written inside. It said

"Like What you Ate? Ordering More couldn't be More Simple. Visit Simplynutrilite.com today."

"Didn't like what you ate? Have your taste buds checked by your doctor!"

I have to say, I do agree with them. It was very tasty. So if you are looking for a yummy nutrition bar, you should try one of these!

2. Listerine Whitening Strips. They only sent me two, so it was hard to tell if they did much in the way of whitening my teeth. They were easy to apply, but I didn't like the taste. Also, they were supposed to dissolve in 5-10 minutes, let's just say 30 minutes later, there were still little pieces clinging to my teeth. YUCK!

And lastly, this one for women only (guys, go read something else)

3. Playtext Sports Tampons. These were fantastic! I recommend you try them! Easy to insert, comfortable and absorbent.

Well, that's all for now. I will keep you posted on more freebie reviews in the future.

Monday's Acts Of Random Kindness

Inspired by the weekly contests at The Average Girl's Guide to Being A Princess, I have decided to begin a regular post entitled Monday's Act of Random Kindness. In it I will tell whatever random acts of kindness I manage to do, observe or receive during the week. I am hoping this will help me to be more aware of opportunities that I have to be kind to others. I also thought it would be a great way to start my week, and hopefully yours!

I would love to hear about your Random Acts of Kindess. Feel free to share in the comments below or if you post about them, leave a link and I'll come visit!

In this past week:

* I have been let out into traffic.

* After posting about the fact that my dh has been out of work since May and that I am trying hard to do reviews and such to bring in added income, a bloggy friend contacted me and asked if clicking on the links in my reviews would help to raise my income (it won't, but I really appreciated her asking).

* My stepson treated my daughter and me to lunch at the Olive Garden.

* When I was limping up to our new church yesterday, a gentleman held the door for me (for a long time. I mean two or three minutes. It wasn't a situation where I was right behind him.

I hope your week has had at least one Random Act of Kindness. If not, I hope these will make you smile.

Caring For Our Dead

It used to be that when a person was ill, they were cared for by their relatives. They died in their own homes. They were lovingly bathed, dressed and put on view for the family members and friends to come and pay their last respects. People remembered the life of the deceased. They had a last opportunity to touch their loved one, to sit next to them and reminisce. This way of caring for our sick, dying and dead, made us more of a part of the circle of life. We weren't afraid of death, we were at peace with it.

But things changed. Our medical institutions got better at prolonging lives, families got smaller due to there not being a need for large families in order to survive. When our parents or grandparents needed care, we started looking to the medical establishment. To nursing homes and hospitals. We were all busy. Working, being involved with whatever it was in our lives that filled up our time. Plus we weren't experts...what did we know about caring for the sick or dying? We needed professionals for that. And for the whole funeral process...again, we relied more and more on professionals to prepare the body for death.

I know that there are times when people cannot care for their elderly relatives. They may not have the resources, perhaps the person in question needs more care than they can provide, but more and more are returning to caring for their sick and their dead at home. And by doing so, they are finding themselves reconnecting with the cycle of life. They are finding closure. Family members and friends are taking an active role instead of just being there at the funeral home and graveside in the last days. This gives all involved a greater sense of peace.

Caring for your dead at home can also drastically reduce funeral costs. Why would we turn over our loved ones to strangers? Doesn't it make sense that by caring for them in the end, we are givning them one last gift? As I said, I know this isn't possible or feasible. A loved one lost to a tragic accident for instance may be beyond a families abilities. But for non-traumatic deaths, it is definitely something I will be considering in my future.

I read about this movement at NBC. And like the homeschooling movement where more and more of us are bringing our children home to learn, I believe it is a movement that will gain momentum.

Memory Lane Monday - Favorite Vacation

MomsBlogging.com is hosting their weekly Memory-Lane Monday post. This week, we are to share our favorite vacation. Now that one is a tough one for me. We have been lucky enough to travel to many places - France, Winnipeg, San Francisco, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Vegas, South Carolina, Florida, New England, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico...we love to travel!

Since a vacation is technically supposed to be a time of rest and relaxation, I will have to pick our vacation to Hico, WV just this last January. We love snow, but living where we do, we often don't see much. The last few years have been particularly disappointing. So when Daniel bought himself a really nice camera this year, he gave me a like amount of money to spend how I wanted and I chose for us to go on a snow vacation.

I researched on the Internet and I found Country Road Cabins. They pretty much promised that they would have snow on the ground and the cabins sounded wonderful. We were within short driving distance of a ski resort and a cavern. I booked us for five days. The cabin had everything from a hot tub to a grill to a dishwasher to a gas fireplace to three bathrooms to a washer and dryer.

We had decided that we would take our computers, but leave them mostly untouched. We weren't going to spend time watching tv either (though it was available. We took books, games, and puzzles. We arrived and it had started to snow. We went out and got groceries and then headed back to the cabin. We didn't leave again until it was time to head home. Not because we got snowed in, but because it was so nice there that we didn't want to go anywhere else!

We spent five days relaxing. We read, we put together puzzles, we played Monopoly and other games. We enjoyed the hot tub and watching the snow. We did play outside in the snow some. We didn't get a huge amount of snow while we were there, but it was white on the ground during our whole stay. I hope we get to go again this year!

September 26, 1983 - Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov Saved the World

On September 26, 1983, I was a senior in highschool. I had filled out my applications for the colleges of my choice. The College of William and Mary and Lynchburg College. I was dating a college fellow, working at the local grocery store and driving my beloved first car.

Australia II, the first non-American winner, wins the Americas Cup.

International A cease-fire in Lebanon was announced by the Governments of Syria and Lebanon.

And in a Russian bunker, the possibility of the end of life the way we know it loomed as nuclear war was a just a button away.

Lt. Col. Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov was on duty for monitoring the skies over the Soviet Union. It wasn't his normal shift. He was filling in for someone who couldn't make it to work that night. While he was reviewing reports, lights began blinking and alarms sounding as the computer reported that a missile had been spotted leaving the United States and heading for Moscow.

Now, USSR protocol at that time was clear. In the event of a nuclear attack, whoever was on duty at the monitoring station was to immediately launch a full-out counterattack against the United States. Then that person was to inform the top officials in the USSR.

However, Petrov took a moment to stop and think. Surely the US wouldn't be sending only one missile. He decided that the informatio was a computer error and decided not to launch the attack.

Then the computer reported several more missiles enroute. But Petrov still waited, believing this to be a computer error, knowing that if he was wrong, millions in the USSR would soon be dead. Time passed and there were no explosions. His instincts had served him well. And here in the United States, millions of people were spared and life in the US and around the world continued on as we know it.

The powers that be in the USSR weren't very pleased with Petrov's actions and they forced him into early retirement (he was 44) and gave him a $200.00 a month pension.

It wasn't until 1998 when a fellow officer, who had been in the bunker with Petrov that night, wrote a book about what had happened that the rest of the world learned how close we came to annihilation.

In 2008, a documentary film entitled 'The Man who saved the World' is set to be released, perhaps giving Petrov some financial help, thanking him for the incredible part he had in keeping the US and the USSR out of a full-blown war.

Petrov saved more lives than any other one person in history! Thank God, he was the one on duty that night.

May God bless you Stanislav Yevgrafovich Petrov. Thank you for our lives and our world!

Adobe Success!

I have been working on my Ruby Throated Hummingbird Ebook. I ran into a problem because my Adobe Acrobat Program apparently has a corrupted file. It took a few days to realize that we had Adobe Acrobat on another machine that we haven't used in awhile.

Well, then we ran into the problem that we have Windows 2007 which is not compatible with Adobe Acrobat 7. But fortunately, I was able to save the publisher file as an older version of a publisher file.

Then we thought I could email the file to Daniel, he could turn it into a PDF file and then send it back to me. The problem is, the file is 53 MB!!!!

That is the reason for turning it into a PDF file! Fortunately, we have thumb drives, so we saved it to the thumb drive from my computer. He opened it on his computer, changed it into a PDF file, and the saved it, gave it back to me, and now I have saved it on my computer. PHEW....that was a lot to go through!

But hopefully, you will think my trials and tribulations were worth it! I will finih up my Bison Book this week and then both the Bison and Hummingbird will be available for your purchase on October 1st. And what a promotion it is going to be. You are going to have the opportunity to purchase the book, donate money to a charity and win prizes! Doesn't that sound way cool!??!!!

A Busy and Productive Weekend

Yesterday, Daniel got Jack up at 5 a.m. for their hiking adventure. Since I can't sleep when others are stirring about, I got up too. They left about 6, heading for Catawba and Dragon's Tooth. Katrina got up just after they left. She played Viva Pinata while I worked at writing ads. Then she and I got all 'gussied' up and went to town.

We met Bruce and his roommate, Ryan, at the Olive Garden. Bruce treated us all to lunch and gave me a program he had downloaded for me off of the web. We had a very nice visit. Right now, the Olive Garden is offering the never-ending bowl of pasta. You get to choose from different types of pastas and different types of sauces. And if you want a second bowl, you can change the type of pasta and soda that you want. I had Smoked Mozzarella Alfredo Sauce and angel hair pasta...my mouth is still happy!

We had a nice visit, then Katrina ad I returned home. I worked on my American Bison book while she and I watched some TV. Daniel and Jack returned home from their hike, tired, dirty and full of stories of the fun they had had. We spent the evening hanging out, watching movies and being relaxed.

Today, the children and I visited a new church. We have been in limbo for over a year. We visited three or four other churches, but none of them really seemed to be what we were looking for. Today we visited the Baptist church where my children have been going to Awanas for the last three years. We received a warm welcome and we all felt very much at home. I think that we will be going here from now on.

Now I am doing a bit of blogging while watching a really bad movie with Daniel (Soda Cracker). I have some more yard sale signs to make, laundry to do, my Bison book to work on some more, and some math to check for Jack. A woman's work is never done!

155 year Old Corpse Identified

What amazes me about this story is that a group of experts from different fields examined the human remains discovered two years ago buried inside an iron coffin. The coffin was discovered by utility workers in Washington.

The body was that of 15-year-old William Taylor White, who died in 1852 and was buried in the Columbia College cemetery, they announced Thursday.

To determine who was buried in this coffin, information was gathered and analyzed by forensic anthropologists, pathologists, DNA specialists, and clothing historians. Besides the physical attributes of the coffin, information about they coffin and when it was available, information from newspapers and other historical documents came into play. It took more than three dozen people two years to identify this body. For more information, check out the Discovery Channel.

Amazingly the iron coffin made it such that the body was practically mummified as if it had been embalmed in Ancient Egypt.

May he rest in peace.

Spelunking on Mars!

The Discovery Channel is reporting that the Mars Odyssey spacecraft has relayed images of seven dark, nearly perfectly circular features ranging in diameter from 328 to 820 feet. At first the dark spheres puzzled scientists, but Odyssey's infrared camera then checked the daytime and nighttime temperatures of the circles and suggested they were, in fact, openings to subsurface spaces.

These caves are at a very high altitude and located on the sides of the volcano Arsia Mons. It is possible that if there was life on Mar or if there is life there now, it could have found shelter in this caverns. It will be interesting to see what they find in these caverns and if they find more now that they have an idea of what to look for.

New Categories for My Blog (And Yours?)

I spent some time this morning creating a couple of new categories for my blog. When I started this blog in February, I didn't know that I would be doing product and website reviews to help bring in some extra income. So I set up a category for reviews and used it for my book reviews and my movie reviews. Well, now that I am doing all of these other reviews for income, I realized that people who maybe don't want to read my reviews might miss out on my book and movie reviews.

So I have created two new categories: Movie Reviews and Book Reviews. That way, if you want to know what I movies I have watched and what books I have read and what I think of them, it will be easy for you to locate those posts. I haven't done those kinds of reviews in awhile, I need to do more. I certainly have been reading and watching movies in my little bit of spare time:)

And I would encourage you to review your categories on your blog. A book I read a few months ago about web design says to keep your blog as simple as you can for your readers. You shouldn't have too many distractions (blinking things can be particularly annoying to some readers) and you should make your other pages easy to find. So if someone comes in and likes a recipe you have provided, make it easy for them to find more you have posted by having them all listed in a recipe category! The easier it is for readers to find interesting information, the more often they will come back!

Laura Says I'm Nice!

My buddy, Laura, at Laura Williams' Musings says I'm nice!

Thanks, Laura! I think you are pretty nice too:)

Now I am supposed to pass this on to some other bloggers, but I just sent around the "You Make Me Smile Award", so I am going to steal Laura's idea. (Plus I always hate to pick because I don't want to leave people out!)

So if I have ever left a comment on your blog or if you are visiting and reading this post, then you deserve the Nice Matters Award! So, leave me a comment below if you accept your award and I will come visit you! And if I am not already linking to you in my sidebar, let me know and I will share some linky love with you(all reciprocal links are always appreciated).

Have a wonderful day! And smile because being nice does matter and if all of us practice it, then the world will be a much better place!

Movie Reveiw: Alice Sweet Alice

Daniel and I haven't been watching as many movies as we were there for awhile, as we have been too busy with life. But last night we watched the movie Alice, Sweet Alice which is a 1976 movie. It was the first movie that Brooke Shields was in and even though her role was really a small one, I found it interesting to discover that after her success in Pretty Baby and Blue Lagoon, this movie was re-released each time with different names. It originally was released with the title "Communion", then it was released after Pretty Baby with the title "Alice, Sweet Alice" and lastly, it was released after "Blue Lagoon" as "Holy Terror".

This was really one of the first, if not the first slasher films. It pre-dated "Halloween" by two years. It was filmed in a time when gore didn't have to cover the screen either for you to be scared. We watched it expecting it to be so-so, but the movie actually turned out to be pretty good. I wouldn't recommend it if you don't like to see any actual killing or blood, but if you don't mind a little, the story is excellent. We were quite surprised with the way the story twisted and turned. Daniel and I have watched a lot of movies and we often know what's going to happen before it does, but this one took us completely by surprise and not just once! So if you like a thriller and want to see a unique story, check this one out.

And Brooke Shields was sooooo young!

Expendability

Have you ever wondered if you are expendable? If perhaps the world wouldn't get along just fine without you? Well, the answer is no...that is unless you like to wear the color red....then you better watch out!!!!

All the real truths of life, I learned from Star Trek!

Trying Not to Let Pride Get in the Way.

This morning I had to do something that goes against the way I was raised and makes me feel very uncomfortable. I had to load up my paperwork and head to Social Services to see if we could get some assistance with groceries and what else we might be eligible for. I grew up in a family with a strong work ethic that frowned on hand-outs for any reason. Even when my dad was laid off...keep a stiff upper lip and all that.

Daniel has been without a contract since the end of May. This was a partially planned hiatus. He is a self taught computer guru and so he wanted to take some time to read up on some of th latest information out there. He started looking for work again the beginning of August and let's just say the phone hasn't been ringing off the hook. We had money set aside to keep all of our bills paid through the end of September. Of course that date is fast approaching.

For the last six weeks, I have been working extra hard to bring in money by writing reviews, bringing more traffic to my blog, writing as many ads as I can for the company here in town that I have been working for for over a year and trying to get more stuff up on Ebay to sell. We are having a neighborhood wide yard sale in a couple of weeks and hopefully because it is going to be several families we will get more traffic out here. I am working on getting my other two ebooks ready for a big launch on the first of October that will come complete with prizes and donations to Habitat for Humanity in New Orleans. And I am working even harder to save money with coupons, sales, and doing without.

But even with all of that, we just aren't pulling enough in to pay our October bills at this moment. Now if someone comes and buys our Suburban, that will help a great deal. If we sell everything at the yard sale that will help and we have managed to sell about 300.00 worth of 'big' stuff (dog houses, dog crate, all play set) that we were no longer using and that helps, so we are making progress. But still, we felt like we would need assistance to get through until Daniel gets his next gig.

I have had to apply for assistance once before, about 16 years ago. I hated it. I being in line with my food stamp coupos while others looked on. I remembered how as a teenager, we had griped about the people who drove Cadillacs and paid with food stamps. What my experience taught me then, is that we really can't judge people by what we think we are seeing. Sure there are people who take advantage of the system. But just like us, there are people who sometimes need a little help until they can get their feet back under them. We are selling things, doing all we can to help ourselves, but for right now it isn't enough.

From 1990-1996, I worked as a Child Development Instructor with an Early Infant Intervention Program. I helped families do everything from learn how to work with a child with disabilities, to setting up doctor appointments, to finding them better places to live. I ran into some impolite social workers during those years. Because of my first experience of needing food stamps, I was able to commiserate with the families and tell them I understood how they felt by the questions they were asked and the looks they were given. That helped them and me.

When I went today, I met a lovely lady. I even told her I felt bad about having to ask for the help and she reassured me that sometimes people just need an extra hand for awhile. She treated me like a human being with worth and that meant the world to me. I saw the intake workers and staff treating every person who came in with respect and dignity. I am glad the system has changed and I want to say thank you to Laverne who helped me out today and did it in such a kind and friendly fashion.

I would like to remind everyone that you may see someone receiving government assistance driving a Cadillac and your first thought may be that the are deceivers. But try to remember, they may just be a little bit down on their luck. Or maybe the car was given to them by a family member who could afford to do so and who wanted them to have reliable transportation. The old saying that you can't judge a book by its cover is very true!

I debated blogging about our situation, but then I thought that there might be others out there debating having to do the same thing I did today. Or maybe someone out there who is already receiving assistance might need to know that they are not alone and that they still have value. So for today, if my sharing this helps one person to feel better, then I will be glad I wrote it. And it helps me to keep my pride in check.

God bless.

CMU professor gives his last lesson on life

Yesterday my husband sent me a link to an inspiring article from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. I wanted to share it with any of you who might not have seen it. This is the story of someone who sees the end of his life coming and faces it with courage, honesty, and words of wisdom to his students.

From the article:

"If I don't seem as depressed or morose as I should be, sorry to disappoint you," said Dr. Pausch, a 46-year-old computer science professor who has incurable pancreatic cancer.

It's more that "I am in phenomenally good health right now; it's the greatest cognitive dissonance you will ever see -- the fact is, I'm in better shape than most of you," he said.

And then, to the appreciative laughs and applause of his audience, Dr. Pausch dropped to the stage floor and did a set of pushups.

"So anyone who wants to cry or pity me can come down here and do a few of those, and then you may pity me," he said.

This man will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He has set a shining example in his life and his approach to death for all to follow.

Sargeant Eddie Jeffers...Read His Words and Open Your Hearts

I have been reading Gazing at the Flag for a couple of weeks now. Today he had several posts that were written by SGT Eddie Jeffers and one post written about him. We are shoveled so many lies and half truths by our media, that I find it refreshing to read the truth from the horse's mouth as it were. To hear from the men and women fighting in Iraq about what is going on over there.

Read these words. Hear them. Support our troops.

Hope Rides Alone.

Freedom Feels Good

The Real Deal in Ramadi

Sgt Eddie Jeffers...Farewell and Walk With God

May God bless your family and comfort them during this time. May God bless all of the men and women who are fighting for us around the world and bless their families for the sacrifices they are making.

Flying Fox or Fruit Bat

This photo is courtesy of National Geographic.

This cute little critter was discovered in the Phiippines recently. But after reading the article, I am not sure if he is a bat or a flying fox. I think it is a bat that resembles a fox. But the headline of the article is misleading and the article itself is a bit confusing. Still..he is cute:)

NBC to offer free episode downloads

This move of NBC is guaranteed to make some TV viewers very happy and to get under the skin of other networks!

NBC will start offering limited free downloads of shows such as "Heroes" and "The Office" as part of its bid to expand the digital distribution of its programs and compete with Apple Inc.'s iTunes Store, the network announced Wednesday.

The new service, dubbed "NBC Direct," will allow users to download episodes to computers running Microsoft Windows software for up to a week after the show has aired on television. The file will contain embedded advertising that cannot be skipped.

Diet Strategy and a Yummy Chocolate Shake!

I have been working on losing weight (again). For the first time I have tried to go for the realistic goals. My goal is to lose one pound a week. If I lose more than that, I get to do the happy dance. I figured out how many calories I would need to eat to maintain my current weight, then I subtracted 500 calories a day to lose the 3500 calories a week that makes up a pound.

I can't exercise right now due to knee problems. It is possible as I lose weight that I will be able to walk more or use our elliptical machine, or maybe I will have to have surgery, but regardless, I have to focus on less intake, not more activity for right now.

I get hungry later in the day. I am not so hungry in the morning. I try to get (4) 350 calorie meals a day and that leaves a little extra if a meal goes over or I want a small bedtime snack. I have breakfast, lunch, an afternoon snack and supper.

I only weigh once every two weeks. I give myself the opportunity to have one non counted calorie meal during each week (a night out, a reunion, a birthday party). I include something chocolate every day. Chocolate pudding is often my nighttime snack. A yummy chocolate shake is my afternoon snack every day I am home. And I have discovered I can have a large box of dark chocolate covered raisins for 360 calories. I have one once a week when I go to Food Lion.

How to make the shake:

1 Scoop Chocolate Slim Fast Optima (this works well for me too because of the added protein)
1 cup of 1% milk
1 banana
1 cup ice
1 blender
1 glass
1 straw

I put in the peeled banana, pour in the milk, add in the Slim Fast, then add in the ice and blend it right up! This comes up to 330 calories and makes about a 24 oz shake. I get in my chocolate, my favorite fruit, and I feel postively wicked because it is like a milkshake!

I also write down my calories, otherwise I tend to go overboard. And I drink at least 8 glasses of water, often 12-16. We have the best water here!

So far, I have lost 8 pounds in the last four weeks. Maybe this will help you too.

Update on Our Late Night Visitors

On the fifth of September, I shared with you some strange events that had occured at our home the previous night.

A couple of days ago, I got the rest of the story...so I am going to share it with you...Paul Harvey style!

So my neighbor that showed up with the strangers who were looking for their stolen ATV shared more information with me the other day.

He said that they did find the ATV at about 4 am. It was on our property. We had to have two new wells put in this past spring. So the guy who had stolen the ATV, headed off down what appeared to be a path (they had to clear through the woods to our house to lay the pipe from the well). He crashed into a tree, took off on foot and went to a friend to ask for a ride to another county. The friend (very obliging as it was now 2 a.m. took him. The police eventually tracked him down and arrested him . The ATV was recovered and has several hundred dollars worth of damage to it. I have yet to walk out there and see if the bozo head damaged our tree!

But that's not all of the story...

Apparently, these people were convinced that we had stolen their ATV. It was only the fact that our neighbor stood up for us and professed our innocence that saved us from being dragged out into the night and made to 'fess up...(okay, maybe I exaggerate a bit), but they really did think we had taken it. Would you care to read the evidence against us?

1. The ATV drove onto our property...well, okay, that could be pretty convincing.

2. I didn't come to the door when the woman knocked...I have explained this in my previous post and I explained it to them that night. Obviously, they weren't buying my 'I thought it was the hamster' story. Apparently, they do not own a hamster so they do not know how noisy they can be.

3. We had too many gas cans considering we had no lawn mower! WHAT!??? First of all, we own not one, but two pushmowers. I guess they were basing the assumption that we had no lawn mower because it was dark and because our grass is three foot high in places...

Well there are good reasons for the tall grass. After my knee gave out on me this summer, I wasn't mowing. My husband doesn't mow (except on those very rare occasions when he does it say he can say he did). Before the knee episode, I was training Jack to mow. But unfortunately, prior to the knee episode, our lawnmower broke. I mowed the end of June, lawnmower broke and by the time I got it back in August, I couldn't mow anymore. Plus it has been so dry here that the weeds in the yard are three feet tall, the grass is only about 4 inches tall if that.

The other reason we have 6 gas cans (yes there are 6) is because we collect them:) We have two gas cans that are set off from everything because they have kerosene in them from last winter when the weathermen were calling for an ice storm that we didn't get. Then we have a small one gallon one that has a gas and oil mixture in it for the weedeater. Lastly we have three gas cans because on occasion, my husband has gone to town on errands (one being to get gas for the lawn mower) and he forgot to take the gas can with him. Since we live out of the way, it was cheaper to buy a new gas can than to come home and get the one here. Of course, if we had a storage building, then they wouldn't have seen all of our gas cans, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

So they had us tried and convicted on the above evidence...you really gotta be careful in today's world. Even when you are innocent, the circumstantial evidence can be stacked against you.

And the rest of the story...It turns out that the grown-ups who were convinced we had stolen their ATV, are the parents of a local boy that I took to court several years ago for beating up on my oldest stepson...The judge threw it out (kid was four years older than Bruce). Don't even get me started on that.

Talk about irony!

Being President Isn't Easy

I wouldn't want the job of the President of the United States for all of the money in the world. I can only begin to imagine the stress, the concerns, the attitudes, the decisions that the President must make every day. You see, I am the President of my Subdivision Association. And while my job is small compared to the President of our country, I deal with much the same difficulties.

When things go wrong...people complain to me (or blame me).

When things go right...no one notices.

When a neighbor calls or stops by, I wonder if I should send out my body guards or offer them a piece of pie.

I took the President job a two or three years ago. The previous President had been doing it for many, many years (like 6 or 7) and the only reason he was still doing it was because no one would else would volunteer. We life in a small subdivision. There is one gravel road that forks. There are 14 families currently living back here. Most of us get along. A couple prefer to be left alone. Things don't always run smoothly.

See the reason we need a President, Secretary and Treasurer is we live on a privately maintained road. I strongly dislike our gravel road that is dusty and prohibits comfortable walking and bike riding. But I love the solitude and the space for my children (each family owns at least 5 acres). So we give and we get. Anyway, sometimes people don't pay their road maintenance in a timely fashion. Sometimes there are real problems, but they don't want to call, then we have to track them down, then they get defensive, and then it can get um...ugly.

Well weeks often go by without me having to do anything Presidential except for waving at the adoring masses and I pass by. But this week, I had to do a whole bunch of work and I am reminded that this job isn't a piece of cake! Fortunately, I am a peacemaker (which is a reason I took this job). There has been peacemaking that has needed to go on among the neighbors for awhile and I have been working on it. It seems to be paying off. And though my week had some extra events turn up and I spent hours I wasn't expecting and didn't necessarily have time for, things are running smoothly again and peace has descended once more.

Aaahhhhh...the sound of it....

However, on October 13th, I will be handing over my Presidential Mantle to another willing victim, uh...volunteer! I will then take over as secretary (easy job for me as I am always on the computer). I look forward to laying aside my heavy mantle of responsibility and sliding down the ladder a bit.

And to the political parties....please stop calling. I really am not interested in moving into the White House at this time....HONEST! Besides, I don't think there is enough Miss Clairol in the world to hide the grey that comes with living in that house!

We Found The Long Lost Tomb of Suburban Today!

Last night, as I was getting ready to go to sleep, a stranger appeared at my door with a map. He promised the map would lead the children to great treasures.

The map looked strangely familiar.

So this morning, the children awoke, had breakfast, and I told them what had happened in the night. They were a trifle 'scared', but anxious to be off.

We went outside to see the map in good lighting. The children took their time studying it.

Jack was sure he knew the way!

We walked through the wilderness as vicious attack cats surrounded us.

According to the map, the tomb was in this huge green and gold vehicle.

Getting ready to open the doors of the tomb...Katrina is a bit scared. Jack is ready for anything!

The tomb is open!

There are treasures galore!

The children nestled into the tomb for over an hour, mapping where everything was located, then drawing each item in detail....

We had such a great adventure, we may look for an Ancient Indian Burial Ground soon (hubby's suggestion!)

Did I mention I love Story of the World!?

Saving Money

A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned. - Benjamin Franklin

This week, I am going to share another way I add income just as Wise Ben Franklin said.

1. If I see a penny on the ground I pick it up...enough of that and it does add up!

2. I used to purchase my husband's vitamins from GNC. Then I found out I could purchase them online at Drugstore.com. and it saves me time and money! First I don't have to spend a huge amount of time wandering out GNC looking for what I want. I don't have to spend the gas to get there (30 minutes away). If I order above a certain amount, I get free shipping (and I always am above that amount...it is expensive to be healthy). If I shop during the first week of the month, I get additional savings through a monthly special that GNC offers (because I have a GNC gold card). And as if all that isn't enough, I get money back from Drugstore.com. They keep track of my expenditures over a three month time period and they send me my Drugstore.com dollars. I have a month to spend them and I use them to buy things like shampoo, toothpaste, etc. If I purchase enough before the coupons are added, then I also get free shipping! What a deal!

2. I have moved my prescriptions to Drugstore.com. They are usually a few dollars cheaper there and they deliver them to me for free if I use standard shipping.

3. I recently signed up for a CVS account. I receive the weekly ad in my email and I peruse it looking for things I need. I only get things that are on sale. My purchases are tallied up over a 3 month period and I get Extra Care bucks from them too. And I can order from the internet, but since CVS is everywhere around here and not out of my way, I stop there when I am in town.

4. I have an MVP card from Food Lion. and I have signed up on their site to receive notifcation of manufacturer's coupons. When the weekly circular comes in, I go through and pick items we are going to eat for the next week based on what the sales are. I also look to see if items I know we need are on sale, if they are I stock up. I normally save at least 10.00 in MVP buys. I often save over 20.00. So I buy 80.00 worth of groceries and only pay 60.00 for them. If I do that every week, that is 80.00 I have earned each month. Also the coupons from Smart Source that I link to through the Food Lion site are awesome! The are often for .50 to 1.00 off of products. The trick with coupons is always to only use ones for things you would normally buy or want to try. Don't buy something you would never use just because you have a coupon.

5. I sell on Ebay and I go through a fair amount of packing materials. I get my boxes free by visiting cardboard dumpsters behind stores. Some lock their dumpsters so you can't use them, but many don't mind. You can also get great free boxes from the local liquor stores. This is also a good way to obtain boxes if you are moving. When we order something in the mail, we open the boxes gently so we can reuse. I keep an eye out for free packing material and I use old newspapers and plastic bags to help insulate items I am shipping. You can also have priority mail boxes delivered for free from the USPS if you ship priority. But don't try to use these boxes for non priority items. That is illegal.

6. I go to Walmart.com regularly and see what their free samples are. It is a great way to try a new product without spending a bunch of money. Plus, if I order, say a box of cereal, then that is a meal that I get for free!

7. I shop regularly at Sam's. We save a ton of money there. There are things I buy in bulk because we eat them on a regular basis and it saves us a ton of money. But I always go with a shopping list to help keep from buying unneeded items. I also am very impressed that Sam's milk prices continue to be the lowest in town. They are selling milk around 3.00/gallon! And their produce prices are terrific! You know those little bitty bags of salad stuff you get at the grocery store and pay 2.50 or 3.00 for? Well, you can get a large bag for like 4.00 at Sam's! Who says it has to cost more to be healthy? Health and beauty products are often a great deal too! As always, it pays to know your prices.

8. We are going fluroscent. Starting last spring, we began switching over. When the old bulb blew, we replaced it with a new energy saving bulb. We are saving money in a multitude of ways and we are helping the environment. I am spending less time changing bulbs which frees me up for other important things. We are saving money on our light bill. I am saving money on light bulbs. I was replacing bulbs every 4-6 weeks in our house. I haven't had to replace a new bulb yet and I am told they can last up to five years! So there may be a little more money on the front end, but overall less on the back end!

9. I buy a lot of reading material from Friends of the Library book sales. Their books are usually reasonably priced and I have even found one sale I can go to where they offer homeschoolers a 50% discount on their already low prices! This way we can appease our love of books without breaking the bank! And if you join your local Friends of the Library group, you can get in before the general public and get the best books! And some sales, have bag sales at the end. So if you go in the last few hours, they are selling the books for 2-5.00 a bag or a box.

10. Yardsales, auctions, fleamarkets. Great deals to be found and it can be a fun family event! Be careful though that you don't end up with stuff just because it was a great deal, not because you particularly wanted it. I love auctions! You can get a lot of great deals there, especially if you hold out to the end. I recently bought a nice twin bed for $10. Made of maple! Real maple...all the way through!

11. When I have to have a book now, I go to Amazon and see if I need enough books to qualify for the free shipping. If not, then I check into their used books which sometimes are being offered for 1 penny plus shipping! I will also check on Ebay. And if you go to Ebay, I suggest you always look at the store items (they are down at the bottom of the page). These are fixed price items and you can often find the best deals there, plus you are guaranteed to get it where as that is not always the case with auctions.

12. I order my stamps through the mail. That way I don't have to drive to the post office (10 minutes away). Saves gas and time.

13. We shop the Goodwill and other thrift stores. This saves me tons on clothing and sometimes I find other items there I want as well. I have found name brand clothing with the labels still on! The prices are great and if you enjoy treasure hunting, this is a great way to spend a couple of hours. But if you don't enjoy the search, then don't give it a whirl, it will drive you crazy.

14. I always accept hand me downs or overs. What I don't need or use, I pass on or sometimes will try to sell.

15. I clip coupons from the inserts in the newspaper. And I have recently found an online coupon site that I visit each week for more great deals!

16. Enter contests on the web! A place I visit everyday is Laura William's Musings. She posts a blog about contests everday! This gives you an opportunity to get neat goodies for yourself or to give as gifts, either way, anytime you get something free, you are saving money!

17. We keep our house a little cooler in the winter and wear more clothes. Makes for good family snuggling!

18. We combine errands so we don't have to drive to town for just one thing.

19. We have two phone lines because of my husband's business. Phones have always been a big expense for us. Back in days of your, we had a 400.00 phone bill because he was working in CA and we talked every day. A couple of years ago, we switched to a Verizon plan where we pay one price and we get unlimited long distance within the US and Canada plus good rates to other countries. This was a great deal for us. But we recently realized we really didn't need long distance service on both lines. So we have downgraded one line so that we can only make local calls on it. That move saves us about 20.00 a month which is 240.00 a year! And they fix the line so that we can't accidentally call long distance.

20. Recheck your car insurance periodically and make sure you are only paying for the coverage you need.

21. Save money by shopping at bread stores and farmer's markets.

22. Another great place to find coupons iand deals is at Momscape. Just sign up for coupon emails!

I hope this post has been informative for you and that you have found at least one way to help you earn some extra money! I would love to hear what you do to save money for your household!

Pirates Rule in Our House

Ever since the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, pirates have ruled in our house. Never mind that real pirates where(and are) thieves and murderers. "_blank">Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Geoffrey Rush have given them new life as lovable scallywags!

We have seen each of the first two movies dozens of times. The third one we have seen three times at the theater (courtesy of 50 cent Mondays). The kids have Pirates figures that they have bought and have played with until limbs have begun to fall off (and still they play with them!). We go around humming the POTC songs, much to my husbands dismay. He is convinced we will never listen to any other music!

The kids and I will suddenly spout off quotes or near quotes as we are going through our daily lives. Such as 'I've got a jar of dirt", "Pirate", "Why's the rum always gone?", etc. The kids dressed up as Barbossa and Jack last Halloween (my 7 yo daughter loves Barbossa!).

And recently my son wrote a play that had a Captain Jack Skarrow in it! We are reading the books that are based about Jack Sparrow as a young lad. These are quite entertaining! And currently we are doing book studies using the novelizations based on the three movies.

So in our house Pirates rule and I don't think they are likely to be replaces anytime soon!

30th Birthday Trip to Las Vegas

This is a memory that is on my mind due to an earlier Tahoe post.

The 30th year of my life was pretty exciting. Toward the end of my 29th year, I had quit my job of 6 years to start on a self-employed course of life. I gave 30 days notice because I worked for the state and I was hoping they would hire my replacement in time for me to train her with my clients, plus I didn't want my clients in limbo land while they waited for a new Child Development Instructor). During my last month, I learned I was pregnant with my first child. Wahoo!!!!!

For my 30th birthday, my husband surprised me with a trip to Las Vegas. He wanted to do something really special and I have always had a knack with cards, so he thought it would be fun. Unfortunately, a couple of weeks before we were to leave, his contract ended abruptly and we were just about broke. But the trip was paid for, there was no getting out of it and we didn't want to throw the money away, so we went.

If I remember right, we had a budget of 600.00 and that was to cover all of our expenses on the 5 day trip (food, gambling, taxis...everything). Fortunately, food in Vegas is cheap! And there was a pool in the casino where we stayed (at that time the newly opened Monte Carlo Casino), so that was free entertainment and television in the room. That all helped stretch our budget. Each day we had $25.00 each to gamble away. It was fun and I can see how people become addicted to gambling.

The casinos are set up with low lighting, free alcoholic drinks(I drank free water and soda because of being pregnant). The rooms are huge, once you go in aways, all you can see is rows and rows of blinking machines and card tables. All you can really hear is the sound of money falling into slot trays and people squealing with delight. It is hypnotic. That is why it is good to be on a budget! So we enjoyed ourselves, even though we weren't sure what would happen to us once we returned home since we were both unemployed and I was pregnant.

While there, my husband, was busy touching base with contacts in California to see if they needed any work done. Well, they did and they wanted him to start right away. We couldn't afford a plane ticket, so he packed his bag and the last day of our time in Vegas, he got a rental car and drove to California to stay there for 6 weeks until more money was coming in. I was a bit nervous. I had never been so far from home (Virginia) by myself before. I felt a bit abandoned though I was glad he got work, but hey, I was pregnant! Emotions are not explicable during that time!

We often think back and joke, that the whole situation would make a great country western song...

"I left my pregnant wife in Vegas...." So Alan, Tim, George...if any of you guys want to use the idea, be sure to remember us when the royalty checks come rolling in!

Hamster Drama

It is 6:30 am and I am sitting in a peaceful, quiet house catching up on emails and reading before I start my day. Jack comes in and says 'Mommy, there's something wrong with Nibbles. He threw up in his cage." Nibbles is Jack's hamster and is 2 years old. We know that we are anywhere from 2/3 of the way to the end of our time with this little guy based on a hamster's life expectancy, so I feared the worse.

I go to check on Nibbles and immediately realize that he hasn't thrown up, but there is a bit of an emargency. When Jack filled up his water bottle, he didn't put the spout on right (which we realized during our repairs that it won't fit right because the rubber ring is gone.) So it had fallen off and filled the tray with water. On top of that right above Nibbles 'level' that the water filled up is a salt wheel which had dissolved into the water. The crystals were the 'throw up'.

So we took Nibbles out, he drank water from the refilled water bottle (held upside down) while I cleaned the salt off. Then we happened to have another water bottle handy. So he is all fixed up and drinking, drinking, drinking. Hopefully our hamster drama turned out well and now I am defintely awake (so are Jack and Katrina!)

Good-Bye Robert Jordan and Wheel of Time

About 6 years ago, I picked up the first book in the Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan. I picked it up for my son, Bruce, who I thought would enjoy the fantasy series. He didn't read it and I kept looking at it on my shelf, so I read it. And I became entranced. I have read all the books in the series and was anxiously awaiting the next installment that was supposed to be the final chapter in the amazing adventures of Rand and his friends.

Unfortunately, that is not to be. Mr. Robert Jordan has passed away after a long and courageous battle with cardiac amyloidosis. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. This master story teller will be greatly missed as will the end of his spectacular tale.

Happy Constitution Day!

220 years ago today the Constitution was signed! For 220 years the Constitution has been the governing law for our country. 55 delegates from 12 states signed the Constitution. Our founding fathers gave us a brilliant foundation.
Fireworks erupt on the Fourth of July, but this is the day that made us a country!

The Department of Defense has a great mini-course on the Constitution!. A great history lesson for your family this week!

Hat Tip: Gazing at the Flag. I didn't know how special today was until I read it on his blog!

Memory Lane Monday - My First Speeding Ticket

It is time for Memory Lane Monday, hosted by MomsBlogging. This week she wants you to share your memory of your first speeding ticket!

I didn't get my first speedig ticket until I was 37 years old. I was driving on a road where the speed limit is 55. I was going 45 and looking for an address for an old high school friend that I had just run into at the Advance Auto. He was a mechanic and I needed a new alternator. He said he would do it for me free of charge and told me the way to his house.

While I was busy looking for his street on the left side of the road, I missed a blinking school sign on the right side of the road and got ticketed for going 45 in a 25....even though I was going 10 miles under what I thought was the speed limit. The really dumb thing is that I didn't protest (policeman always make me feel guilty, plus I figured after 20 years of driving, I probably deserved at least one speeding ticket). However, the irony was not lost on me that I had saved about 100 bucks getting my alternator changed for free by a friend, but I spend 150 bucks on a speeding ticket! GRRR!

What really made it bad was that I got two more tickets in the next year! It was just a bad year for me. One ticket was for running a red light. It turned yellow, I didn't feel I had time to safely stop, so I drove through. The police officer behind me didn't agree with my assessment! And I did share that information with her. I got home and realized she had written the wrong vehicle information on my ticket (I had the wrong registration in the car) and she didn't catch it. I went to court, shared this information in a non-snotty way, hoping that the judge would throw the ticket out. HMPH! He thanked me for correcting the error and made me pay the ticket anyway!

Then a month or so after that, I was driving a new car. I had been driving a 1988 Suburban (where when you go 45 you feel like you are flying because you feel every bump and curve). Now I was driving a 1992 Caprice and that car floated on air. So I was going almost 60 in a 45 and didn't realize it. The cop who pulled me over noted my temporary plates and might have been kinder to me if not for the previous two tickets...I took a driving saftey class online after that to get the points off my record. That was 4 years ago and knock on wood, I have been doing better since!

But I have to tell you, I was about ready to give up driving! What a year!

Monday Acts of Random Kindness

Inspired by the weekly contests at The Average Girl's Guide to Being A Princess, I have decided to begin a regular post entitled Monday's Act of Random Kindness. In it I will tell whatever random acts of kindness I manage to do, observe or receive during the week. I am hoping this will help me to be more aware of opportunities that I have to be kind to others. I also thought it would be a great way to start my week, and hopefully yours!

I would love to hear about your Random Acts of Kindess. Feel free to share in the comments below or if you post about them, leave a link and I'll come visit!

We were at the library on Monday and after Katrina, my 7 yo daughter, checked out her books, she took a dime out of her purse and told the librarian that she loved coming to the library and she would like to make a donation. WOW! The librarians were tickled.

My son, Jack, returned a neighbor's lawnmower. The 15 yo next door was going to mow our yard for us when our lawn mower bit the dust. She got started on it, but never finished and left her lawnmower in our yard for a couple of months. We are pretty laid back around here and since there hasn't been any rain, her family really didn't need the lawn mower right away. Well, Jack returned it for her this week. See, it was at the bottom of our yard (which is the same as saying at the bottom of a hill, then our neighbor is about 1/4 mile down the road, so it wasn't the easiest thing lugging it back.)

Laura at Laura Williams Musings made me a button for my blog...it is so cute! You can see it in this post.

A Random Act from my past...I had a flat tire on an acceleration ramp during 5:00 traffic time. I don't know how to change a tire, and this was pre-cell phone days. As I was sitting in the car pondering what to do and watching car after car speed by ignoring my hazard lights and flat tire, a gentleman pulled over and changed my tire. He said that he would hope that were his wife or daughter in the same situation that someone would stop and help them.

Community Yard Sale

Since I live a bit off of the beaten path, I always hesitate to have a yard sale at my home. In the past, I have taken our items to a local flea market on a couple of occasions, but that particular flea market is no longer in business. So what to do...I have items I need to get rid of, I want to make some extra money, what's a gal to do? Well, I hit upon a stellar idea. I am running an ad in the local paper for a multiple yard sale. I have talked to several neighbors, told them I would run the ad, I would put up the signs and all they have to do is put out their stuff they want to sell. So far between 7 and 9 of the neighbors have committed to join in! Pretty cool, eh? So now we will be a draw to yardsales (gotta love having multiple sales in one small area) and hopeuflly we will all make more money!

We are scheduled for October 6th. I have a bunch of stuff piled up to sell and now I just have to make up some signs. I'll let you know how my grand idea goes!

Review: The Mad Days of Me: Escaping Barcelona (and a Giveaway)

A couple of weeks ago, I won the book: The Mad Days of Me: Escaping Barcelona, a novel by Henry Martin. (Thanks Breeni! )What attracted me to the book (besides the fact that it was free) was the title. I love traveling and the fact that Barcelona was in the title made me curious.

I really had no idea what the book was about. Now that I have read it, I am conflicted about how I feel about it. Overall, the main character, comes through a horrendous ordeal and manages in the end to get out of the situation he has become mired in. Along the way he sees some of the worst attributes of humans and gets glimpses of good attributes. The novel is 172 pages long. There are some 'shocking' scenes in this book and if you don't want to read about personal violence and violations, you probably don't want to read this book. But if you like to read about how people overcome terrible situations and keep going, then you may very well like this book.

BTW, the book is signed by the author. So I am going to pass this book along to a lucky reader! If you are interested, simply place a comment below. I will have a random drawing on September 15th. If you really want to win the book, you can earn yourself an extra chance by placing a link to my blog on your blog. Be sure to let me know you have done that so I can give you an extra chance!

Good luck!

WINNER! Mad Days of Me:Escaping Barcelona

Crystal is the winner of this signed book by Henry Martin. I put everyone's name on a piece of paper, Laura's went twice and then my daughter drew the name! I have sent Crystal an email (she doesn't have a blog). Thanks to everyone for stopping by! And thanks to Breeni for putting the book in circulation for give aways to begin with!

Words of a Soldier

I just read a wonderful and sad post written by a soldier who has just returned from a 22 1/2 month deployment in Iraq. Of all the words we should listen to about what is going on in Iraq, it should be the words of the men and women who are there fighting it out every day.

We have become a country of media hounds. We take the short cuts to getting information and unfortunately, the main stream media that provides us with the information has a hidden agenda. The politicians that get up and spout empty words have an agenda (on both sides of the political fence). And as Troy says in his post we are more worried about our consumerism than the war against people who want us destroyed and we know more about the lives of Brad, Angelina and Brittany than we do about the men and women fighting for our country.

And how many of us truly remember 9/11? Americans don't like to remember that which hurts them, so we say the right words, but do we really allow ourselves to reexperience the horror of the day, the sadness, the anger, the patriotism? How many of us still display the flag as we did in the days following 9-11?

So please, take the time, read what Troy has to say. Reflect on it and then pass the word on. Perhaps we can turn the ripple he has made with the stone of his words into a wave that will sweep away the untruths and popularity contests and leave behind a country united and with a single purpose.

God bless Troy. God bless all the men and women in the armed services who fight to protect our freedom, our way of life and the freedom of others around the world. And God bless our President who has had to deal with difficult issues and who has not listened to the media and the opinion polls, but who has done what he believes to be in the best interest sof our country.

Video Time Capsule From 2003

We are going through our house trying to get rid of things we have accrued over the years that we don't need anymore. We are trying to make a few extra bucks and declutter at the same time. We had a really nice video camera that we purchased in 1996. You know the huge ones that wear you out after you hold them on your shoulder for an hour taping the kids Christmas program?

Well we had stopped using it about 5 years ago. The batteries stopped taking a charge, there were smaller cameras on the market and the dinosaur of camcorders just got put away. It has been collecting dust ever since. So as we do our declutter, I pulled it out and worked on it to see if I could get it to work.

As I flipped it from side to side I realized there was a video tape still in it. I still couldn't get any of the batteries to charge, but by plugging the charger into the wall, the plugging the camera directly into the charger, the camera could run off of electricity. I put the camcorder in VCR mode, rewound the tape a bit and smiled as I watched my then 5 year old son playing on the piano with his daddy.

I took out the tape, the kids and I put in in the vcr, rewound it and were delighted to see video of a kitten that had disappeared without a trace when he was a year old. There was video of Katrina with her Shirley Temple hair at about 18 months of age, playing in the sandbox. She sang Happy Birthday for me and then stood up, looked down in the sand and proudly announced...'footprints'.

There was video of Daniel, Katrina and Jack 'playing' together on the piano. Video of Bruce, my oldest stepson, and I trying to avoid the camera. Video of Daniel's mom and stepfather. There was a video of where Jack and Katrina took turns standing on top of the closed toilet and sang to a captive audience. I am so glad we found that tape. What precious moments there are on it! I had forgotten how curly my daughter's hair was and I had forgotten that she had been singing and performing from early on in her life.

There is a video of Jack hugging Katrina, helping her get stuff, and hamming before the camera. He is still that way. We watched the tape twice. It made my heart sing.

Later Jack came up to me teary-eyed and said he didn't want to grow up, that he wished he was still little and we were having so much fun. My son....your growing up is a bitter sweet journey for me as well. I love watching you learn and grow into a man, but I miss the little boy who I held so often when he was young. In my heart, you will always be my little child.

Wedding Memories

I was visiting Sasha's blog, Cherished Moments. She is getting married in a few days and is so excited. She was wondering about her readers wedding memories. Well, after I left a lengthy response, I realized, I probably should have just posted it and left her a link to the post! I would lik this to be here on my blog for my children to read, so I will post it here.

Weddings are days we are supposed to remember all of our lives. I will always remember our wedding though it was not the 'dream' wedding. It was a day full of quirky moments, love, and friends.

My current husband and I have both been in a previous marriage. My first wedding was the dream kind of wedding and the marriage lasted about 18 months. His marriage had resulted in the birth of two children, but due to irreconcilable differences, his marriage didn't last either.

When we met, we instantly hit it off (and you can read about that in a previous post But neither one of us was in a hurry. We lived together for 4 years before we finally tied the knot. During those four years, we obtained custody of DH's children, moved and went through job transitions. Toward the end of our fourth year together, we came unexpectedly into a few thousand dollars. We both wanted to travel, so we booked a two week trip out west (Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico). We decided to make it a honeymoon, but we only had about 4 weeks to get our plans together before we were leaving on our trip. The pastor of the church I was attending wouldn't marry us that quickly because he insisted on a 6 week counselling program.

So a friend of ours introduced us to a minister of a small church on the side of the Peaks of Otter in Bedford County. We talked with him and he said he would be delighted to perform the ceremony. The church was a one room church with no air conditioning. Did I mention we got married on August 20th in Virginia in the middle of the afternoon! YIKES!

We invited all of our neighbors (we live in a small subdivision), a few friends, family members, and co-workers to join us. We recorded the music we wanted to play on a casette tape. I had a friend who was selling Beauty Control and she volunteered to get me made up for the day (this was a mistake, I don't normally wear makeup and in the heat, it melted off of my face...). I purchased a navy blue dress from Goody's and Daniel had a suit to wear. We each had a friend to stand up for us and we were good to go.

Well, the day arrived nice and hot and humid (in the 90s with 100% humidity). Daniel was supposed to arrive at the church at least 30 minutes early so that he could start our recorded music, but he arrived 15 minutes late. So the wedding was supposed to start at 3:00 pm, but due to technical difficulties, it didn't start until 15 minutes after because we had to wait for the songs to play so we could get to the recorded wedding march.

Do you have any idea how long the wedding march is? This aisle was maybe 20 feet...so we stood at the front of the church staring into one another's eyes, trying to ignore the sweat dripping down our faces and wishing we had fans liks the guests while the wedding march winded down.

The ceremony was brief. I don't know if it was the heat or the pastor had an abridged wedding ceremony he was reading, but we didn't repeat the wording of the vows, we simply said I do's, I wills and we were married. After we kissed, Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis was cued on our tape and Daniel did an exuberant dance down the aisle before coming back and fetching me. It definitely wasn't a conventional wedding.

A friend of Daniel's took photos and they were great (too good actually) as they clearly showed we were all wilting in the heat and humidity.

After the photos were taken, we invited all to join us at a local Chinese restaurant (on their own dime). We did provide a cake, but we had spent all of our money on the trip. They joined us, we had a great time and the Chinese hosts were marvelous!

So was our wedding a dream? Not from any conventional standpoint, but our unconventional wedding has stood up to the test of time way better than my dream marriage did, and in all isn't it the end results that matter?

And we certainly won't forget anything about the day! Another sign that it was a memorable event! The honeymoon was fantastic! We loved our trip so much, we repeated it a few years later with children in tow.

I would love to hear your wedding memories!

There's A New Kid in Town...Mom's Turn

I was perusing through Laura's contests today and saw a possibility to win a homemade quilt or notecards. That piqued my interest, so I went and took a look.

And not only am I excited about the prizes, but I am excited about this brand new website! The purpose of Mom's Turn is to give us a chance to vent anonymously and get much needed support! We all started blogging to share our feelings, to record things for posterity, but as more people come by to read our words, we find ourselves not sharing everything we feel because we don't to upset or offend someone. So Mom's Turn comes to the rescue.

You can email whatever is bothering you to them. They will publish it anonymously. And hopefully people will come by and comment and give you support! What a cool idea! So go check out the contest and learn more about this opportunity to be anonymous!

Our Children's Chores and Allowance

Allowance is something we give as long as my dh is working. As a computer consultant, he sometimes goes through periods of time when he is not working and when that happens, allowance generally stops because we just pay the essentials. When all is right in our financial world, our children get their allowance once a month. They each get 1.00 a week for every year of their age. So Jack, who is 10, can get $40-50 a month. This comes with a 'hitch'. Their allowance is what they have to buy things they want. Toys, video games, CDs, etc. We buy clothes, but if they want something special that I might consider a bit frivilous in the clothing line, they would have to purchase that themselves. If something comes up that they want, they have to wait until the next time allowance rolls around. I encourage them to keep a list of things they want so when they get their allowance, they can have that to remind them instead of picking up the first thing they see. I have also shared the joys of yard sale shopping, ebay, and thrift stores and how they can stretch their dollars further...

Now on to chores...

I am conflicted about chores. When my mother was a child, she was sent to live with her grandparents until she was 10, then she was brought home to do chores. She cleaned, cooked, etc. So when I was a child, she didn't expect much out of me because she felt she had been robbed of her child hood. I brought in the mail, helped clean (more because I wanted to help her than because she asked me to because she never asked me to), and i emptied the dishwasher. Sometimes I cooked dinner when I was older. I also mowed on the riding mower, but again, because I wanted to and liked it. My husband grew up where his mom did pretty much everything for him (and guess who is picking up after him now...) So I strive to be more middle of the road.

A couple of years ago, I heard about the idea of chore jars. I picked out 14 basic chores (sweep and scrub Kitchen floor, clean mirrors and sinks in bathroom, that sort of thing). Four days a week (the days we do school work) they each draw a chore to do. If I have time, I will hit something in the room they are working in (like cleaning the chandelier in the dining room). Most chores don't take them more than 15 minutes, sometimes as much as 30. This way, I am teaching them to clean up and how nice it looks when they are done, but I am not makig it in such big chunks that they hate it. They don't always do it perfectly, but I work really hard not to criticize or redo it behind them. My goal is not perfection, but giving them responsibility, teaching them for when they are grown and freeing up some of my time.

They do have things they are in charge of regularly (Jack gets the mail, Katrina feeds the cats and rabbits). Jack is also becoming our lawn mower because my knee is prohibiting me from doing it. Chores don't get paid for, the allowance isn't linked to the chores. They receive allowance to teach them financial responsibility and because they are part of our family and share in our resources. They do chores because they are part of our family and we have to work together to get things done...

Thanks for stopping by!

Book Cover Meme

This is way too fun of a meme to pass up. I read about at Trinity Prep School. She read about it at Stephanie's Confessions of a Book-A-Holic. And it is such a fun idea!

Here’s how it works:

Go to the advanced book search on Amazon; type your first name into the Title field, and post the most interesting/amusing cover that shows up.

Now I admit that I didn't pick the most interesting cover as I try to keep things 'G' rated around here, but I did choose a cover that has meaning to me. I had very long hair until I was in 5th grade when my mom made me chop it all off as she was tired of fooling with it. I don't think anything neat was done with it though. I have a friend whose daughter had never cut her hair until she was 11 when she had about 2 feet cut off and donated it to Locks of Love. And my daughter who is seven is now letting her hair grow long so she can do the same.

If by Rudyard Kipling

I was visiting Gazing at the Flag this morning and I found this poem there. It is wonderful and I want to not lose it so that I can share it with my son, so I am posting it here. What wonderful words! Truly the pen is mightier than the sword!

IF by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Speak out Against Lead Toys

Go leave a comment at Mums the Wurd about how you are feeling regarding the lead paint in toys from China and what you would like to see the government do about this situation. We need to make our voices heard on this matter! She will get our word to the proper people in time for an October 1st meeting!

She is also going to be giving away a $100 gift certificate to Natural Pod. Be sure to peruse the site and you will no doubt be pleased with the quality toys that are made with our children's best interests in mind.

Laws are not going to get China to stop what they are doing. Our lack of consumerism of Chinese products will. Buy better quality toys and stop burying our children in glitzy plastics that may harm them. So they may have fewer toys to play with, but then they will be encouraged to be more creative, more imaginative in their play and we will be teaching them value and quality over consumerism. Plus we will be bringing business back to our own country. Seems like a win-win situation to me.

I've Got a Button for my Blog!

I am so tickled! Laura over at Laura Williams Musing has been such a great friend since I have met her.

She is talented and dedicated. She writes reviews of books. She provides daily information about a huge variety of contests. And now I find out she is talented in HTML and design. I have been learning HTML, but design and I part ways...I just don't have the eye for it. So, Laura has shared her talent with me (and she has already done so much to help my blog grow) and made me a beautiful blog button! Go ahead...just look at it!

Thanks a bunch, Laura! Now if any of you want to link to my blog and have a pretty picture on the side, below is the code to help you do just that!

A Pet Peeve: People Who Pull Out in Front of Me

I really get annoyed by people who pull out in front of me while I am driving down the road. I am not talking about when there is heavy traffic and the only chance the person has to get out is to pull out in front...no, I can understand that. But what I don't get is when I am driving down an open road...visibility is a couple of miles in either direction. I am driving 55 or so and someone decides that they can't wait for me to pass by, but they have to pull out right in front of me instead. This leads to me slamming on my brakes and saying words that I shouldn't as I try to skillfully avoid hitting them or introducing my front grill to their trunk! Grrr! And I must admit,, I have to fight the desire to keep from tailgating them from there on. And the ones that are the worst are the ones that pull out in front of you, got 1/2 a mile, then turn off....AGGGGHHHH!!!! Can you tell this bothers me?

"Why, oh why" am I telling you this? Well, other than the fact that I hope if you are one of these people who pull out in front of others it might encourage you to change your ways...you never know when you will pick the wrong person to do it to and they decide to just hit you. But the other reason is because there is this adorable mohair teddy bear that needs a hug and I so want to be the one to give it to him! Check it out and share your pet peeve with the rest of us!

Scream Free Parenting Book Contest

Diane at The Mommy Spot has given a terrific review of the book Scream Free Parenting. And she is also giving away 5 free copies of the book! Go check out her review and leave a comment! This is a book every parent needs at one time or another!

Adding income to our Single Income Family

For my contribution, I am going to share how I add some extra income to our Single Income Family. I love being a SAHM and a homeschooler. I wouldn't give up these moments with my children for anything. But, I don't like laying all of the financial burden at my husband's door. Plus I want to teach my children a good work ethic and I like having 'my own money' for extras or when Daniel is between contracts, my income helps keep us afloat.

So here are the things I do to make extra money.

I have been writing ad copy for over a year for a local company in my home town. This company sells items on Ebay for other people. I only make 3.00 an ad, but I can generally do 4 or 5 ads in an hour and depending on how many ads they need written up in a week, I bring in an average of $100.00 a week.

I have been selling on Ebay for a long time. I started out with the help of my friend Carole . I have made income by purchasing books at library sales, auctions, and yard sales and then reselling them on Ebay. I have also sold vintage toys, used children's clothing, homeschool curriculum, and other collectibles. This last year, I added on selling for friends. I take 25% and I do all the work, photographs, research, ad writing, answer questions and mailing the items. I have made a few hundred dollars this way in the last year (selling for just three friends). I like selling other people's stuff the best, because the only money I am putting out on the front end is listing fees and my time. I am also very particular about what I choose to sell. If my research indicates that there isn't a likely chance of selling it for at least $9.99, I say so and then I either return those items or donate them as the person wishes.

Having a yard sale. I currently have our whole house under inspection to get rid of items we don't need. I have told the children that they get to keep all the money they make from any of their stuff they sell. This has helped them to declutter more than any other tactic I have tried. We live in a rural area (a small subdivision with a gravel road). I am going to contact all of my neighbors to see if I can get the interested in doing a yard sale the same day...so we can get more traffic for all of us when I post the ad about 'Sudivision Wide Yard Sale' or Mulitiple Family yard sale.

I have also used some ads, though I try not to clutter up my blog too much. I went to Google Ad sense and signed up and you will see there are a few google ads around my blog. So far I am not making much money with these, but have earned a couple of dollars and as I put more content on my blog and get more clicks, I hope that number will rise. What I like most about Google Ad Sense is that the ads they put on the blog echo my content 9 times out of 10.

And lastly, I have tried doing some Amazon advertising. I decided I didn't care for their banners as the books weren't always ones I would want to have seen on my blog. But I do like to post reviews of books or movies I enjoy and I will often through in an Amazon link, just in case the reader wants to get their hand on a copy right away. So far, I haven't made any money this way.

Tune in next week and I will share other ways I help add to our financial abilities!

Gazing At the Flag

Yesterday, I had a visit from a blogger who came to read my post about Lt. John A. Crisci, a hero who fell during 9/11. I went to visit his blog and I was very impressed. Here is what he has written on his header.

The first thing I see when I look out my window is my flag of the United States of America blowing in the breeze. Often, I will sit and gaze at the flag - great focus for thinking. These are my musings and ramblings, and, on occasion, rants... I am unapologetic in my support of our military, our country and my devotion to God. I will honor them and pay tribute to them here.

If you haven't been by to visit Gazing at the Flag in your travels of blog land, I highly recommend this site. It will stir your patriotic feelings and it is refreshing to read someone who supports our troops, our country and is unashamed of his belief in God.

2,996: September 11, 2001 A Tribute to Lt. John A. Crisci

> Lt. John A. Crisci

I wrote this post last year as part of Project 2,996. I am reprinting it here.

September 11, 2001 is a day that lives in our hearts and minds. We all remember where we were that day and what we were doing. My husband had just started a new job in Canada and I was mopping floors before taking my sick child to the doctor. My husband called me with the news that the world as we knew it had changed in an instant. As deeply as this day affected Americans and indeed people around the world, the people most affected were those who lost loved ones on this day etched in our minds. As part of the 2,996 Memorial, I want to remember one of the people who left us that day.

John A. Crisci was a family man. Actually he had two families. John was first a husband, who for nearly thirty years loved his wife Rachael. Together they raised three fine upstanding boys, John Jr, Michael and Joseph. He was dedicated to his three sons, never pushing them but rather supporting them in all of their endeavors. The boys excelled in sports, school and behind them was their mother and father reinforcing the true value of competition, that friendship and fair play was the reward, not just winning. John wasn’t into fancy vacations, he preferred sitting in his backyard swinging in the swing and drinking coffee.

When you think of John, see a man who loved his children and wife. A man who worked for everything and took nothing for granted. John and his brother, Leonard were born in Brooklyn in a three-room apartment that never had heat in the winter and was always hot in the summer. They lost their father when he passed away in 1968, John was only 15 then and just starting High School, yet he stayed in school and went on to college. John’s belief in commitment and responsibility were displayed throughout his life.

Besides being a father, brother, son and husband, John was also a member of the New York Fire Department family for 23 years. John A. Crisci began his life in public service with the New York City Police Department, assigned to the 88th precinct and then the 114th precinct before becoming a NYC Firefighter.

In 1988, a major fire consumed a tenement in NYC’s Harlem area. John was informed that a small child was missing and might be on the sixth floor. He raced into the building, up six flights of stairs, crawled through thick smoke and found the child. With his back to the flames, and the child in his arms, he exited the building down a fire escape to safety. He was honored by the NYC Fire Department with one of its highest awards. He shrugged this off with a typical “What’s the big deal” attitude that he always had.

John A. Crisci loved firefighting and was a rescue specialist and teacher. In 2001, he was working with the Hazardous Materials Company 1 in Maspeth, Queens. His shift was over on September 11, 2001 and he was on his way home when the first plane struck. Instead of going home, he changed back into his gear and jumped on a rig headed for lower Manhattan. Before entering the World Trade Center Tower, he saw a probationary firefighter with an orange shield on the scene. He said, “Go back to that truck and stay there, and don’t move.” John saved that man’s life. Unfortunately, John and 17 other members of the Haz-Mat Co. at Maspeth were lost when the towers collapsed.

John was a hero to his children, to his co-workers and to millions of people around the world. He put others lives before his own, and on the day the towers fell, he was doing what he believed in and what he was trained to do. John was not a man looking to make a name for himself. He was called to serve and to protect. He followed that calling willingly and with joy and conviction. I have no doubt that John now stands in Heaven, still watching over his families. John, on September 11, 2001, you and your two families became linked to the rest of us. We are sorry that your life ended when and the way it did. But we thank you for your commitment and example. You are a true hero. May God bless and keep your family safe until you can all be together again.

Earn Money Selling On Ebay!

About 4 years ago, a gal in my homeschool group offered to teach any of us that wanted to learn how to sell on Ebay. She spent a day with the three of us and I went on to take her advice and tutoring and I have been selling on Ebay off and on since then. 90% of what I know about selling on Ebay I learned from Carole. And the money I have made in the last four years has happened because she helped me out and continues to do so. When I get stuck, she's a phone call away. And she has been kind enough over the years to share with me information about local book sales, what to look for in items to sell on Ebay and when she started venturing into clothing, she did a huge amount of research and then shared that with me too.

I thought I would take some of my blog space and thank her by helping her to promote her website where you too can learn from a veteran Ebay seller. She has a positive feedback score of 99.9% and then has been achieved by over 6400 individual feedbacks! I asked her to give you a little blurb about what she has to offer. And by the way...Chewy is Carole's dog...he helps with all aspects of the business!

Monday Act of Random Kindness

Inspired by the weekly contests at The Average Girl's Guide to Being A Princess, I have decided to begin a regular post entitled Monday's Act of Random Kindness. In it I will tell whatever random acts of kindness I manage to do, observe or receive during the week. I am hoping this will help me to be more aware of opportunities that I have to be kind to others. I also thought it would be a great way to start my week, and hopefully yours!

I would love to hear about your Random Acts of Kindess. Feel free to share in the comments below or if you post about them, leave a link and I'll come visit!

Well, I almost didn't have anything to write today. Last week, opportunities didn't present themselves for me to observe or participate in. But today, my daughter saved the day. We have piano lessons on Monday afternoon. They are an hour long. First my daughter goes and my son and I run some errands, then they switch.

I got all of my errands done with Jack, so Katrina and I headed to Chick Filet as they have a play place and 1.00 ice cream cones. I offfered to get her the ice cream or the waffle fries. She asked for chicken instead. I was happy to oblige. Then she took some money she had gotten this last weekend when cleaning out some things and she went up to buy herself a small cone. She is only 7, but has no problem with doing this sort of thing. She came back with a cup of ice cream and two spoons. She said she wanted to share with me. You have to understand, my daughter loves ice cream cones. So not only did she give up her rare treat of a cone, but paid a bit more so she and I could share some ice cream together. She is such a sweetie!

Memory Lane Monday

Heather over at MomsBlogging.com is hosting a Memory Lane Monday post. Today's Memory Lane post is for us to tell about our first car.

In some ways I was like a guy. I wanted a cool looking car that drove fast. I had a friend with a black 1966 Mustang Fastback...oh that was an awesome car! My dad and I traveled around town looking for a car in the 1200.00 range (money saved up in my savings account that they has started for me as a kid). We checked out several, but the one I fell in love with was a 1976 silver Monte Carlo. I purchased that car in the spring of 1983 and I drove it until the fall of 1988. I loved my car! The only thing that could have made it better was mag wheels and a blank paint job!

It had a huge engine and boy could it tear up some highway! And those sleek lines...the burgundy interior, and that special ticking sound that the engine made due to the clicking valves. That car had class...was built during a time when people still wanted their cars to have style. And when I finally did replace her, I purchased a white Monte Carlo SS. I loved that car too but didn't keep it as long. Repairs on it ate me out of house and home! I have photos of both of these cars. I am going to try and locate them so I can post them here.

Thanks, Heather. I can hear the tunes cranking and the wind blowing through my hair as I drive on down the highway!

Coupon Chief - Online Coupons For Everywhere You Shop!

The old saying is that necessity is the mother of invention. Well, DH is out of work and times are really tight and I am into full mode for finding coupons and ways to save and make money! Today I heard about a great coupon site called: Coupon Chief.com. One of the ways I like to save money is by shopping online and here this online coupons site has been made known to me! I love shopping online, because that means i don't have to fight the crowds in the store or spend money on gas driving hither and yon. Plus I can take my time and pick out exactly what I want! Shopping doesn't get any better than that!

At Coupon Chief.com, not only can I find coupons for items I need every day, but I can get codes and coupons to help me save on my holiday shopping! With Halloween , Thanksgiving and Christmas as well as my stepson, Charles', birthday and my son, Jack's, birthday, I need all the help I can get. And this site makes it oh so easy to find exactly what I am looking for.

If I have a general idea, but am not sure of an exact item, I can check a category listing. If I have a particular store in mind I can go through the website that way. For example, we have several pets...4 cats, 2 hamsters, 5 fish,. and 2 rabbits. Our pet bill can be a bit on the high side so we are always looking for ways to cut costs there. So I thought I would look and see what I could find under the pet category. There are several different stores to choose from and each store offered different options (a percentage off of a total order or free shipping if my order was above a certain amount). This way I can choose the pet supply coupon that suits me best.

Target is a store I love to shop because they have great children's clothes and a wonderful selection of children's toys. So I visited there and found some terrific deals!

Amazon is another place where I spend money and they have some online coupons at Coupon chief, makes finding great deals a snap! It is easy to locate the stores you want to shop from out of hundreds of options and it is easy to find out what's out there by clicking on a specific category! So do yourself a favor and go check it out! Start saving money today! (Signing up is free!)

Idiocracy

My husband is TiVO crazy. He goes through the channels looking for movies that peak his interest, then when we have time, we watch them. Many of them are movies we have never heard of and about 1/2 of the time, they actually turn out to be pretty good.

One such recent surprise good movie was Idiocracy. This satirical movie provides plenty of food for thought! It begins with an average guy and an average gal being involved in a program where they will be frozen for a year, then revived to see how it all comes out. They were picked because they were average, and they weren't contributing much to society.

At the beginning of the film you see the main character being fussed at by his superior officer about how when he is told to 'lead, follow or get out of the way,' he shouldn't always pick the get out of the way option!

Anyway, the experiment goes amuck and the two average people don't wake up for over 500 years! In the meantime the rest of the planet hasn't fared too well...The smart people waited to have children (wanted to be financially secure, wanted to feel like society was secure and wanted their relationship to be great) and often ended up not having children. The less intelligent bred like rabbits and passed on their less intelligent genes.

So when the two average people wake up five hundred years into their future, it turns out that they are the smartest people on the planet!!!!

This movie is rated R and it is based on stereotypes. But the possible future it points out for us is not pretty and one we might want to think about a little! Check it out and see what you think! I would love to hear from you.

Early Morning Risers

My husband loves to hike. I enjoy it too, but now that my knee doesn't want to work like it should, hiking is something I can't do. So we haven't been in awhile. But last weekend, DH decided to take Jack for a hike. They climbed Sharp Top (part of the Peaks of Otter in Bedford County) and had a wonderful afternoon. Jack was so jazzed up about the trip when he came home and it was great father/son time. Jack and Daniel both blogged about it and shared photos if you would like to see them.

So last week was such a success, they decided to go on another hike today. This time they are heading to Flat Top (the other mountain at the Peaks of Otter). It is a longer hike than Sharp Top, but a more gentle hike (Sharp Top tends to be straight up). It is supposed to get hot here today, so they left at 6 a.m.! DH was in the shower at 4 and they banged around from 5-6 getting ready...So much for my day to sleep in! I am glad they are spending some quality time together and having so much fun.

Meanwhile Katrina and I will hang out at home. Bake a cake, take care of the rabbits and hamsters (cage cleaning day), and watch movies. So we will have fun too (if I don't fall asleep.....zzzzzz)

Happy Anniversary Voyager 1

Thirty years ago today, the Voyager 1 spacecraft rocketed into the sky to join its sister craft, Voyager 2, on a mission to boldly go where no Earth-based creations had gone before.

The probes were originally meant to visit just Jupiter and Saturn, but NASA scientists decided to extend the mission to include other planets after receiving stunning images and other data from the two gas giants.

Today both Voyager probes are still going strong and are speeding toward the outer reaches of the solar system to explore what lies beyond our sun's sphere of influence. Now about 10 billion miles (16 billion kilometers) from the sun, Voyager 1 is farther from Earth than any other humanmade object. (Above information and photo is from National Geographic. Be sure to visit their site to see other things that Voyager has found during its travels).

2 years, 3 months, and 2 days later, Star Trek: the Motion Picture was released. In this movie, a huge cloud is heading towards Earth and everything that gets in its way is drained of all power and then vanishes...Kirk, Spock, McCoy and crew head off on a newly refitted Enterprise with a young crew to face this threat. In the end what is discovered is that at the center of the crowd is Voyager 1.

Voyager 1 had been damaged during its exploration of the universe. The machine civilization discovered it and repaired it as best as they could to continue with its mission which was to gather information and share with its creator. Along its journey, Voyager gained intelligence and when it returned to the solar system it had orginated from, it could not beleive that the 'carbon-based' units on Earth were its creator. Instead, they were seen as an infestation that had to be terminated. In the end a new life form was created and the first of many Star Trek movies was ended (and James T. Kirk had saved us once again!).

It is an interesting idea to contemplate though. What exactly will Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 run into on their travels?

I wish both Voyagers good travels! Live Long and Prosper! And bring back exciting information!

Late Night Visitors

Last night was progressing along normally. Daniel had gone to bed early (about 9 pm) because he had been up since 4 a.m. due to a meeting he had to drive 3 hours to get to at 10. I was in Katrina's room reading stories to Jack and Katrina while Katrina was taking a bath in the bathroom (next to her room). Jack was lying on the floor and I was in Katrina's bed reading Time Cat.

As I was reading, I heard what kind of sounded like noise at the front door, but it was about 10:30 so I figured Jack had been knocking about as he was listening to the story. I asked him if he made the noise and he said he thought it was Katrina in the bathroom. Well she was to the right of me and the noise was to the left of me, so I knew it wasn't that. I waited, listening, then saw that Ella, the hamster, was running around in her cage. Since she was to my left, I assumed that was what I had heard and I went back to reading.

I then realized I was hearig a lot car engines. We live a mile off of the paved road. Our subdivision is a very quiet place and we rarely have visitors, particularly not at 11:00 at night! But obviously something was going on. I go to my front door, open it and there in the driveway are two cars, and another is at the top of the driveway. A woman is talking on her cell phone saying 'I followed them here.' and I am a bit freaked. I holler out and ask if I can help these people.

She keeps asking me where we live and I holler it at her, but she can't seem to hear me, probably because of people talking and the cars on. A few moments later, one of our neighbor leads three people up our sidewalk. Apparently someone had just stolen these people's ATV and they saw it drive onto our property. The woman asked why I didn't answer when she knocked. I told her it was because I didn't realize someone was knocking at the door. I knew the neighbor which made me feel a bit better, but I was still nervous about the whole thing. I told them I hadn't heard anything, that we were reading stories and bath water had been running which drowns out all sounds when you are near it.

So I shut and locked the front door and kept looking out the window. No one was moving. So I decided to wake up Daniel. About 15 minutes later, the people finally left our driveway, but they drove down to the edge of our property where they thought the ATV had entered. You have to understand, we have a wooded lot, it would be hard for anyone to drive through there. We listened to them talking and then came back inside and waited, assuming the police would arrive soon. They did and an officer came and knocked on our door.

He wanted to know if we had heard anything? Did we have kids? How old were they? And why didn't we come to the door when someone was knocking and lastly what was our address? Daniel said later that he felt like the officer was trying to make sure we were the people who lived here and not people who had broken in...

Meanwhile Jack and Katrina were hiding in Jack's bed with the door shut afraid and excited all at the same time (though we told them there wasn't anything to be afraid of). By midnight we were all asleep. I haven't heard anymore about what happened...but what an exciting night it was!

Great End of Summer Deals!

One of my favorite things to take advantage of is end of the season sales. Things that I have eyed all summer and now stores are wanting to get rid of them so they are offering at great deals! In the last couple of weeks I have saved a bundle on end of summer items such as beach towels, ice pop molds, and pool chemicals. One thing I really like about buying at the end of the season, besides saving money is that when the season rolls around again, I have new stuff to use!

For example, last year, after Christmas, I bought new Christmas ornaments and decorations. I didn't use them because Christmas was over. They go into storage in their unopened packages. This Christmas I will be getting my items out of storage and there will be new items we have never used before (and often I have forgotten exactly what I got so it is like a present.)

So, I suggest you keep your eye out for end of season sales. Also, you can catch good sales before a new season has come into full swing. For example, I was checking out this site: Online Discount Mart

Online Discount Mart specializes in Home and Garden items. There are cute figurines, stepping stones, garden decor, and accessories for every room of your home, just to name a few of their products! Right now they are offering great sales on their summer items as well as special deals on their fall decorations!

Have fun shopping!

Help a Young Man Help His Brother

I have been visiting Laane on the World for a few weeks now. I first stopped by because of a contest, but I have continued to read her posts because I find them interesting. Laane has an autistic son who has a computer that is on its last legs. Laane has been doing a variety of things to save the money to purchase her son a new computer. Well, another son decided to help out in a most unusual way.

Be sure to go check out his idea for a fundraiser and encourage him. If each reader just gives a little bit, think of what a difference we can make! Not only will we be helping a young man to help his brother, but we will be blessed ourselves with the knowledge that the money we could have spent on an ice cream cone or soda went to help someone in need.

You can also check out the update. So far $30.00 has been raised!

Observing, receiving, or creating Acts of Random Kindness is hard to do when you spend most of your time at home! Here is my list for the last week.

1. Last Saturday, I received a surprise bonus check in the mail. I write copy ads for a local company that sells on Ebay. I have been wirting for them for a year. They sent me a 'thank you' bonus check. A pleasant surprise and it came i handy.

2. When I was loading up at Sam's, I was putting our cold items in those 'chill' bags that you can buy from Sam's. A fellow shopper walking behind me told me that I was smart. Made my afternoon to hear that from a total stranger!

3. I was driving down the road and wanted to get some water from my water bottle. The strap had become entangled around my purse and my son noting this, reached over and unhooked it for me without being asked!

4. A fellow driver let me out into traffic.

5. I am currently seeking permission from photographers to use their photos in my next ebook(free of charge from them). They have all either granted permission or pointed me in the direction of the person that they got the photo from.

6. Be sure to check out about Acts of Random Kindness.

Middle Name, Middle Name, What Can It Mean?

Laura tagged me with this neat little meme to find out what middle names mean?

The Rules:

1. You have to post the rules before you give the facts.
2. You must list one fact that is relevant to your life for each letter in your middle name. If you don’t have a middle name than use a name that you like.
3. When you are tagged you must write a post containing your own middle name game facts.
4. At the end of your post you must tag one person for each letter in your middle name.. Don’t forget to comment them telling that they are tagged and to read your post to get the rules.

My middle name is Dawn (though if you come to my blog or read my publications you will see an 'O' in between 'Melissa' and 'Markham'. That 'O' is for my maiden name which is 'Orndorff.' Isn't it odd how we throw away our middle names when we get married? Though I must admit, I love my new initials. M.O.M. An interesting side note...my mom had anticipated having twins...why I am not sure since there aren't any twins in our family. If I had had a twin sister, her middle name was going to be 'Dusk'. Pretty cool, eh!?

Daughter. I am an only child of an only child (my mom). However my dad is one of 7 and my mom's mother was one of 9!

A nimals. I love learning about all of the amazing animals that God has placed on this planet. That's why I share animal news here.

Writer. I have been writing in one form or another since I was 10 years old. Poetry, stories, novellas, books, newsletters, and now blogs. I can't get away from it! And I love the written word!

Native American ancestor (my great, great grandmother was a full-blooded Native American). My heritage also includes, German, English, Irish and Scottish ancestry.

Now for my four friends....

Also, be on the lookout as I will be having a neat opportunity posted in the next few days for you to win prizes, help people in New Orleans and receive great products at the same time!

Without further ado, here are the winners of my August give-away contest!
