Late Night Visitors

| | Comments (1)

Last night was progressing along normally. Daniel had gone to bed early (about 9 pm) because he had been up since 4 a.m. due to a meeting he had to drive 3 hours to get to at 10. I was in Katrina's room reading stories to Jack and Katrina while Katrina was taking a bath in the bathroom (next to her room). Jack was lying on the floor and I was in Katrina's bed reading Time Cat.

As I was reading, I heard what kind of sounded like noise at the front door, but it was about 10:30 so I figured Jack had been knocking about as he was listening to the story. I asked him if he made the noise and he said he thought it was Katrina in the bathroom. Well she was to the right of me and the noise was to the left of me, so I knew it wasn't that. I waited, listening, then saw that Ella, the hamster, was running around in her cage. Since she was to my left, I assumed that was what I had heard and I went back to reading.

I then realized I was hearig a lot car engines. We live a mile off of the paved road. Our subdivision is a very quiet place and we rarely have visitors, particularly not at 11:00 at night! But obviously something was going on. I go to my front door, open it and there in the driveway are two cars, and another is at the top of the driveway. A woman is talking on her cell phone saying 'I followed them here.' and I am a bit freaked. I holler out and ask if I can help these people.

She keeps asking me where we live and I holler it at her, but she can't seem to hear me, probably because of people talking and the cars on. A few moments later, one of our neighbor leads three people up our sidewalk. Apparently someone had just stolen these people's ATV and they saw it drive onto our property. The woman asked why I didn't answer when she knocked. I told her it was because I didn't realize someone was knocking at the door. I knew the neighbor which made me feel a bit better, but I was still nervous about the whole thing. I told them I hadn't heard anything, that we were reading stories and bath water had been running which drowns out all sounds when you are near it.

So I shut and locked the front door and kept looking out the window. No one was moving. So I decided to wake up Daniel. About 15 minutes later, the people finally left our driveway, but they drove down to the edge of our property where they thought the ATV had entered. You have to understand, we have a wooded lot, it would be hard for anyone to drive through there. We listened to them talking and then came back inside and waited, assuming the police would arrive soon. They did and an officer came and knocked on our door.

He wanted to know if we had heard anything? Did we have kids? How old were they? And why didn't we come to the door when someone was knocking and lastly what was our address? Daniel said later that he felt like the officer was trying to make sure we were the people who lived here and not people who had broken in...

Meanwhile Jack and Katrina were hiding in Jack's bed with the door shut afraid and excited all at the same time (though we told them there wasn't anything to be afraid of). By midnight we were all asleep. I haven't heard anymore about what happened...but what an exciting night it was!
