WFMW: Increasing Traffic

| | Comments (13) | TrackBacks (0)

It is a blog eat blog world out there...how does one rise up in the ranks and get more traffic? Between February and August 15th of this year, I had about 400 visitors. I blogged sporadically, but it was also hard starting all over again. I had previously had a blog site over at Homeschoolblogger. While I loved the community there, I began thinking of using my blog as part of a business venture and I wanted to have my own domain name, so I moved. In the 18 months I had been at HSB, I had received somewhere around 13,000 visitors. That was a pretty cool number. I had received visitors from well over 100 different countries. I let all of that go to start again...that was tough! Since the middle of August, I have had over 3000 visitors! In two months! How did I accomplish that change?

Well, here are some things which have worked for me.

1. I started visiting more and more blogs. I visited old friends from HSB and left comments with my new website. I went back more than once. I made new friends around bloggy land as one link led to another and another.

2. I submitted posts or joined 'big draws'. The first one was the Homeschool Open House that Tiany hosted. That brought me a lot of traffic. Other things that I have tried linking up with are WFMW, Memory Lane Monday, Acts of Random Kindness, and Homeschool Carnival. A couple of these memes/carnivals are very well attended and as long as I provide good and useful content, my visitors will stay and look around a bit.

3. I still post occasionally over at HSB. A lot of people are there and they visit blogs randomly. That's a great resource for me.

4. I write about things that interest me. That makes my writing interesting. If my hangnail interests me for some reason, I will write a better post and you will be more likely to read it because my 'heart' is into it.

5. I have contests. People love getting stuff for free or almost free (at least I do), so I host contests for neat items.

6. I review new products and interesting websites. This helps me to pull in traffic that might not otherwise visit my blog.

7. I am generous with linky love. If your website is one I think is neat and I enjoy, I will link to it. The more links a blogger gets, the higher their google ranking will go.

8. I try to share news that I don't see on other blogs I visit. Particularly animal news. We are big animal lovers in our house. My children often bring home non fiction books about animals for us to read. I have learned tons about animals since homeschooling my children and I am always fascinated when new species are found, or species are doing better than previously and I like to share that information.

I hope some of these tips will be helpful to you! Good luck and happy blogging!

That's what works for me! If you have tips you would like to share or if you want to read other great ideas, go check out this weeks Works For Me Wednesday at Rocks in My Dryer!

I love the carnivals too and I have noticed a huge amount of traffic generated from them! Thanks for the other ideas too!

Thanks for the tip. I'm still fairly new at this and am learning as I go along.

Great tips! Especially in the mommyblogger niche, you have to actively comment on other blogs if you want to increase traffic--it's all about relationships.

Thanks for the tips. I have only been blogging for a few months. I have been pouring my heart out in so many ways and it is discouraging when no one comments. I will try some of these tips.
Thanks for sharing!

Great tips! I've done all the things you listed but my problem is getting people to come back after visiting for the first time. I get a lot of visitors through memes but the traffic goes way back down to single digits after a day or two past WFMWs. I'm going to have another contest soon so I know I'll get traffic from that.
Blessings!

Great tips. I want to grow my blog so I will have to give those a shot.

So very, very true. I was on Homeschool and Homestead blogger. I love the communities but was limited by it as well so I moved to wordpress. Since the end of July I have had 8950 visitors! That just blows me away! I see my link on blogs that I am visiting for the first time. Wow! I put a map on my blog to see where people are coming from. Countries all over- that's where.
This is a very true and great post!
