WFMW: Being Prepared - Book and Cards

I like to do a lot of things! I enjoy needlepoint, reading, playing video games, playing cards with my kids. I hate times when I am forced to wait somewhere away from home because I sit and think about what I could be doing. So I have a way around this. I never go anywhere without the current book I am reading and I always have a pack of cards in my pocketbook...always. And if I know I am going to be someplace where I need to be more attentive than having my nose stuck in a book, I take my needlepoint (somplace like gymnastics). That way, if the car breaks down and i have to wait for a jumpstart, i have a book to read. If the kids are bored, I have cards to play.
And my kids follow my example. They don't leave the house without something to occupy themselves with in the car. We live 30 minutes from most anywhere. And they like to keep busy. One time, when they were visiting with friends in town, Sharee told them they were going to run to the grocery store (5 minutes away and my friend shops daily). Jack told her just a minute that he had to go to the bathroom (I train my kids to use the restroom before we leave because unless they want to go behind a tree, it will be thirty minutes before the next bathroom). And then he started gathering his stuff. Sharee said 'Jack, we are only going to be gone for about 15-20 mintues. Jack was flabbergasted! What!? We wouldn't even have reached our destination by then! Even though Jack is not in the Boy Scouts, he certainly agrees with their motto!

Great way to raise your child. We do all that too! :-)
this is a great tip - i'll definitely have to remember the cards. have you heard of "namits"? it's a fun little game - cards on a ring - "name 3 things that bounce" etc. there's a junior and regular edition. i keep one in my purse and one in the car. everyone gets into it!
