WFMW: Organizing Recipes

| | Comments (6) | TrackBacks (0)

When I was spending my last Christmas at home before going to college, my mother handed me a treasured gift. She gave me a metal box full of recipes that over the years I had enjoyed or ones that she thought I would enjoy in the future. Among those recipes were ones from my both of my grandmothers, my great grandmothers and friends of my mom. As I began to cook on my own, I added recipes from in-laws, friends, and magazines. Now that I am on the web all of the time, I am picking up yummy recipes here.

So back over the summer, I began a project. I didn't want to have to copy a recipe every time someone wanted one and I wanted to pass on the legacy that my mom had given me to those in my own family. So I set down and put every recipe I had into Microsoft Word. I sorted them by types of dishes (appetizers, drinks, desserts, pork, poultry, etc) into their own folder. Then I burned my recipe folder onto CDs and gave one to my stepsons, gave one to my mom, my stepmother and I have given several away as gifts. Currently there are about 500 recipes in my file. To add new recipes, I pull them out of magazines and add them periodically to my file. When I burn my next disk, they will be included. The one thing I hadn't figured out what to do with was recipes I ran across while blogging.

Well, I have set up a Recipe folder in my Internet favorites list. When I run across a recipe I really like, but I don't want to print it out or take the time to copy it right then, I save it in my favorites. I change the title of the blog to the name of the recipe. Then, I can go back and review it there and when I have time, I can simply copy the text into a word document and viola...another recipe added to my collection!

That's what works for me, and perhaps, it will be helpful to you as well. If you love getting new recipes, you can click on the recipes button in my right sidebar and order the CD for 10.00. That includes shipping and handling. There are some great recipes on there! This would also make a wonderful gift for someone on your shopping list!

That is a GREAT idea! This year, I'm giving all the females gift sets of matching beaded bookmarks and keyrings in their favourite colours.

I haven't figured out what to give the guys yet!

I was going to make some recipes and put them on index cards for a gift this year. This sounds even better. I will definately do this.

what a fantastic idea and a fantastic gift! you could scan in the original recipe cards if they're handwritten and just include them for nostalgia's sake in each file as well...

Great idea! I am going to do this. Perfect gifts and cheap, too.

What a great idea! I'm always trying to figure out how to best organize my recipes - I'm on my 4th system now with a 3-ring binder. Ask me in a year how it's working out :) I may have to computerize like you :)
