Great Grocery Shopping Day
From time to time, I have read about great deals at the grocery store...you know the really great deals where someone actually got money back from the store for items they purchased? Or they paid pennies for a product? Well, since we have been forced to cut back drastically (like reduce our grocery bill by virtually half in the last few months, I have been looking extra hard for specials and coupons and preferably the coupon/sale combination. One thing I have decided is that even once I have more money to spend in the food arena, I am going to keep up with these new habits. I would like to get more fresh fruits and veggies (which seem to fall off the list when you are trying to save money), and I have missed having a diet soda each day, but I am not going to go back to doing a lot of shopping at Sam's.
I had gotten in the habit of going there and feeling like I was saving money, but in reality, I don't think that was necessarily true. There are some things that I can definitely get cheaper there, but many things are better price or at least comparable at Food Lion and what I have discovered at Food Lion is that I buy less, because it is just a grocery store...there aren't all the other things to attract my attention that have nothing to do with groceries. I don't have a total amount of what I have saved, but I average 40.00 a week with coupons and MVP sales at Food Lion. Some weeks dip down to $26.00 and some weeks the amount saved goes as high as $75.00. I love it!
So, back to my good great shopping day today. On my overall bill, I saved about $44.00 with coupons and MVP savings. That means I got $135 worth of groceries for a little over $90. But my two big hits for the day were these:
1) I had a coupon for buy 1 2L of Sierra Mist and get one free. I had two of these coupons. I have really been missing soda so I decided to treat myself. The store had them on sale for the price of 4/$5.00. When I turn the coupons in at the register, they mark off the normal price, not the sale price. The normal price is $1.59 per drink. Sooooo I purchased 4 2L sodas for 1.82 cents!!!!! And I got the Sierra Mist diet with cranberry...yummy!
2). This is the find I have been dreaming about! And it wasn't even on my shopping list, but I pounced on it. My daughter loves yogos. I enjoy them myself, but we haven't been getting them very often. They are normall priced at about $2.75 for a box. Well, this week, it turned out they were an MVP item and each box was marked down to .99 cents...that a $1.76 saving per box!!!! Then, the kicker? Some of the boxes had a $1.00 off coupon on the front! YES!!!!! We bought everyone left that had that 1.00 coupon on the front...which was 5 boxes! We were paid five cents from the grocery store to take home those 5 boxes of Yogos...I'm loving it!!!!!!
It is a huge thrill to get deals like that! I need to jump back on the frugal bandwagon! I've been spending too much on groceries over the past month!
