I Love a Parade....
We had a wonderful time at the Christmas parade today! The kids and I left here around 9:45. We got there in plenty of time to grab a cup of yummy hot cocoa and find a prime spot near the beginning of the parade with friends. I don't know if they do this in all parades, but in our parade, the people in the parade throw out candy. It was like Halloween all over again! Of course at the start of the parade, they are throwing out lots of candy...who knows if the poor kids at the end get any. Katrina came home with two pocketfuls of candy and that was after she had given all of her peppermint to her friend Mariah and she had given many, many pieces to children in the parade.
We met up with three other homeschool children: Mariah and Cade. As we started to see some young kids going by in cars and trucks and on floats waving...we realized they weren't getting any candy. So from then on, these five kids would run up to kids in floats and hand them candy. It was sooooo cool! And I was very proud of all of them! The kids who were receiving the candy from us were tickled too!
The parade ended after about 1 1/2 hours, and then as we were walking back to the car, Daniel called. He was in Roanoke, picking up some dry cleaning and getting some last minute things he needed for his trip. He invited us to come have lunch with him ...Chinese...yummmmy! So we drove to Roanoke and met him for lunch...or lupper since I have eaten since that yummy lunch. Then on the way back, we stopped and found Katrina some slip on winter shoes. I was tired of the fact that she was still wanting to wear flip flops and she doesn't like tennis shoes. She doesn't like any kind of confining or binding or scratchy clothing. Whe doesn't like to wear socks. She isn't crazy about jeans...she would rather wear dresses and skirts and flip flops. We may need to move to CA!
We got home about 4:30 and I spent a couple of hours helping Daniel get packed and ready to go. He leaves at 5 am tomorrow to catch his flight to Bloomington, IL.
And no, we didn't get any decorations up...but that's okay, at least we enjoyed some Christmasy stuff today.
Oh, and one more thing...the parade was cool and had some good floats. There are two memorable ones I want to share with you. (Sorry, I forgot to take my camera). One of the local red hat societies had a pick-up truck. They were all sitting in the bed of the pick-up, with one lady in a wheel chair and a cast on her arm and her leg. In the front seat of the truck on the passenger side was a mounted deer head that was moving back and forth like he was nodding his head...he looked very Christmasy too. The sign on the side of the truck said "Grandma got run over by a reindeer'! It was the best float in the whole parade!
Then there was one of those 'What were they thinking moments'. An EMS group went by...with Santa on a stretcher...they were shouting...'It's okay, he's alright...just too much holiday cheer..." I can't even imagine how many kids had to have therapy after that! Gee whiz! I told my hubby and he remarked it was probably one of those ideas that sounded really good when the EMS people were talking around a bowl of spiked egg nog!
