Product Review: Dawn Direct Foam

|

The makers of Dawn Direct Foam were kind enough to send me a full size sample of this new product. I received it a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't get a sponge until today. To use Dawn Direct Foam, you need to use a sponge. I am a dishcloth user. I have never taken to sponges for my dishes. Don't ask me why, it's just my preference. So today, I finally remembered to get a sponge so I could try out this new product.

The directions with this product are to dampen a sponge, squeezing out the excess water and start washing. You are to use the water for rinsing only. And you don't want to get the sponge too wet, you should only dampen it a bit to get more bubbles out of it. First off, this is so totally alien to me...I have been putting some soap in my sink, running it full of water and washing dishes for over 25 years. But I was game to give it a try.

First I got all of my dishes together. These are our dishes from today. I generally only wash once a day unless a lot of cooking is going on. As you can see there were only a couple of handfuls of silverware, four glasses, four bowls, about 5 or 6 plates, one cookie sheet, and four tupperware containers. Not too much.

I put water in the sink, wet my sponge, squeezed it out, then used my Dawn Direct Foam and pumped out one pump. What I got was a little bit bigger around than a quarter and mayabe a quarter of an inch high...Not very impressive. The white blog is the Dawn Foam...sorry, my camera is not the best. But note the quarter for comparison of size.

So I began to wash...having to fight my urge to dip the sponge into my sink that was half full of water. At first I used that water for rinsing...thinking, hey, this is a great way to save on water. But then I realized it was getting dirty quick and with no soap in there to help keep the dirt from my dishes, I was quickly back to rinsing from the tap as normal. I also wasn't crazy about how the dirt from the silverware was on the sponge...yuck! I got through the silverware and the glasses and then I had to rinse the spongs and there were no more bubbles!

So I went for squirt number two. Same size. This squirt got me through the bowls, plates and most of the tupperware. But When I got to the greasy casserole dish, cookie sheet and leftover manwich container, another squirt was required. But finally the dishes were done (aren't they pretty!).

So...it took three pumps to get my dishes done. If you evaluate the fact that Dawn's statement says one pump will get a sinkful of dishes done, then it does indeed do that job. If you thought that one pump would get all of your dishes done. It doesn't cut the mustard. It also doesn't really save anything in the water department or on time. I guess it saves on how much dish detergent would be needed. But if I need to use on average 3 pumps a day and it really does have 250 pumps in it, that's about 80 days worth of dish detergent. That would defintely last longer than my normal dish detergent does, but then today was a light day of dishes, so I am not sure it would last longer or not.

It smells good. It got my dishes clean. I wasn't overwhelmed with the foam from my one pump, but it was okay. It reminds me of my body wash and I love that stuff. Where a little dab goes a long way!

So on a scale of one to ten I give it a five. I might like it better if it didn't seem so foreign to me. I do think it delivers on exactly what it says and if you think you would only use 3 or 4 pumps a day, it would definitely be a money saver!
