Dreaming of a Place to Live...

Sometimes I like to dream about where I would like to live if I could live anywhere I wanted to. Since we have travelled a bit, I have some ideas. One state that both my husband and I have enjoyed very much is Colorado. Particularly the western half with the beautiful mountains and the clear streams. The snow is another attracting feature. We love snow and don't get anywhere near as much as we would like here in Virginia.

So I have been looking around, just daydreaming and I came across Winter Park real estate. Just an hour from all of the conveniences of Denver and nestled in the beautiful Rocky mountains. Fishing, skiing, hiking, and mountain biking are just some of the activities you can enjoy in your own back yard. Sounds like the life to me! Alas, it looks like I would have to win the lottery in order to purchase a home there, but I can dream, can't I?

So, where would you like to live if you could live anyplace you wished?

Get Ready - Tomorrow Is April Fool's Day!

My daughter has been asking a lot the last couple of days what the date is. Now this could be related to her birthday coming up on the 8th....or it could be related to her love of April 1st and the opportunity to play pranks on people...and get away with them!

I was curious as to how April Fool's Day started so I went out looking around.

National Geographic has the following article: April Fools' Day Facts: Behind the Laughs

Like National Geographic, Wikipedia says that the origin of the day is shrouded in mystery and time, but there are some great past pranks that have been pulled and some of them are listed at Wikipedia.

No matter how the day started, it is fun to 'get' friends and family and fun to 'be gotten' as well. If you want to do something different that your children will love, check out the Family Fun website for ideas of pranks you can pull (especially the meals you can make)!

Have fun!

World's Greatest Extinction Not Caused By Toxic Gases The thing I like most about this article is it points out how little we still know....even about things we think we understand!

"Mountains of the Moon" Glaciers Melting in Africa Below you will see the photo that shows the difference between the glacier 50 years ago and today. This shows us how our world is growing warmer. Though I am not convinced that this is not a normal trend for our earth. There are too many conflicting views on that for me to make up my mind at this point.

Plasma TV is Beautiful, But it Needs Accessories

The last television we bought (prior to the plasma televsion we purchased last spring) was heavy as all get out, but easy to use. You purchased it, brought it home, set it down, plugged it in and watched it. We eventually purchased an entertainment center stand and we slid it into its proper spot, but it could sit up on the table, on the floor, wherever we chose to place it.

With the new thin televisions, you can't just set them on a table or on the floor because they will fall down! You have to order a plasma tv mount. Now they can be mounted on the wall or you can purchase a stand that sits on an entertainement center and then you mount the television to the stand, but the flat screen televisions must have support or else they will topple, crash and you will cry....a bunch! So don't forget to order your mounting accessories when you upgrade to the new plasma television, so that our TV won't be left sitting in a box!

Katrina Debuts as a Book Reviewer!

Last month I won a book called Katie and Kimble: A Ghost Story by Linda Thieman This was a book I had hoped to win for Katrina to read. And I was tickled to win it and give it to her.

Linda had included her business card in with the book, so I emailed her and thanked her for the giveaway and told her that Katrina was enjoying the book. She wrote back and asked if Katrina would write a review for her. Katrina agreed and it is on the Katie and Kimble blog today. So go by and check out Katrina's reviewand be sure to leave a comment for Katrina here. She would love that!

My daughter....the book reviewer....I am so proud!

I didn't read the whole book, I read the end of it to Katrina this past weekend when she was fighting a small bout of the flu and I enjoyed the end of it. Linda has the second book in the series which will be available for purchase soon and get this, you can purchase the paperback from her website or you can purchase an instant download version. She also has free downloadable classroom materials for teachers and homeschoolers as well as other kinds of fun items on the Katie and Kimble blog for children to enjoy.

I appreciate an author who goes the extra mile and turns a book experience into a complete experience for children.

Moveable Type, Plugins, Sidbars, reCaptcha, and Burning Popcorn

What a day....actually, what a couple of days. I have been hard at work at my blog. On Thursday, I upgraded to the newest version of Moveable Type. At one point I was in tears because I thought when it upgraded, I would see everything and then have a reference point to work from as far as where to put things. But it didn't work that way. However, once Daniel reassured me my stuff was all safe and sound (remember the copies I was busy making?), then I just bit the bullet and got to work. By the end of the first day, I had worked out several things on my own, but my sidebars weren't showing up, my captcha wasn't working and my picture wasn't showing up in my header of my individual posts.

Yesterday we sat around and just enjoyed having Daniel home. He did help me figure out the fifty million steps I needed to go through in order to get my captcha working. You should have heard me whooping and hollering when it was working! But then I found out it was so hard to read, that regular commenters were running into problems. I ran tests and I could get the comments to go through, but that was no good if others couldn't. I wanted to stop spammers, but didn't want to stop my friends!

So I did some research this morning and found out that there is a plugin of reCaptcha available for Moveable Type. reCaptcha is one of the coolest captchas out there because not only is it reasonably easy to read most of the time, if words come up that you can't read, you can refresh without losing your comment. And there is an audio component. I went through several steps and learned some new things (like how to download a file to my ftp server), but the last step is one I can't complete, because I don't have the template referenced. So I am still working on that particular problem.

Then with some help from dh, I got my image working in all my headers and I got my sidebars up. Then after diligence and testing I got my old stuff into my new sidebars. I am ver pleased with how it all turned out. I still have some tweaking to do. I would like a bigger font for instance. But overall, it is in good shape and I am proud for having figured most of it out myself (be sure to notice I now have 2, count them...'2' sidebars!)

As to the burning popcorn. I was outside chatting with the two fellows who were restaining our deck when a really bad smell erupted from the house and I was instantly transported back to my college days. You remember...the ones when the fire alarm went off on a regular basis because someone left the popcorn in the microwave too long?

Well, Katrina had put some popcorn into the microwave. Something she has done numerous times over the last couple of years. It's simple. Unwrap the popcorn, insert in microwave, shut door, push popcorn button. And viola!

Well, apparently, my darling daughter hit the wrong automatic button. We think she may have hit the baked potato button. By the time the people in the house realized what was going on, we were steps away from having a full blown fire in the microwave! The inside of the microwave was covered in popcorn ash, there was virtually nothing left in the popcorn bag and the smell....yuck!

So, be careful, gentle reader! Remember to always watch the button ou are pushing on the microwave! The consequences could be very exciting!

Friday Week in Review

It's been a pretty quiet week, well for us, it has. It was spring break for two of Jack and Katrina's friends, so even though our intention was to do school work in the morning, since we are ahead of schedule for finishing, the only work we really did this week was watch some animated Shakespeare and Jack did math every day.

Monday

No piano this week because of spring break. So Monday afternoon, we took Brandon and Kaylie with us to see the Veggie Tales Pirates movie and National Treasure: Book of Secrets. I enjoyed both movies very much, as did the children (and in between the movies, we ate dinner at Sam's). I love 50 cent Monday at the movies and dinner at Sams. We saw 2 movies for a grand total of 5.00 and our dinner, for the five of us was 19.00 (that was a drink, huge slice of pizza and a cup of ice cream). The kids liked both movies too. My only problem with National Treasure was the whole kidnap issue... I mean why didn't the President just tell them it was a misunderstanding to keep the FBI out of it to begin with...

Tuesday

We had to run to the library and grocery store in the afternoon. I had told Kaylie's mom that perhaps she could come over in the afternoon when we returned. Well, Kaylie's older sister had an ultrasound that morning and her amniotic fluid was low, so they decided to induce. I offered for Kaylie to come spend the night so Cindy could concentrate on her older daugher having a baby. Kaylie, Katrina and I went to the library and ran some errands. I was tickled because I borrowed I Robot. I had never seen it and I enjoyed it.

Kaylie and Katrina had the best time. They ran a cafe. They put on a concert and just played. The day was so beautiful that I read some outside and Jack played outside.

Wednesday

Kaylie's sister had a hard time and they decided to do a c-section, but then things finally started moving along and she had her baby girl naturally about 24 hours after the whole thing began. Cindy had been awake for 36 hours or more so I offered to let Kaylie spend another night. Kaylie and Katrina were ecstatic!

Jack suprised me by doing some of our mulching on his own. We still have mulch to spread, but after my initial hurry which made my knee ache, we are taking it slowly!

Thursday

I spent the day working on my new blog look. I got the front page header looking right, the layout of the main page wide column the way I want it. The individual entry page still is giving me problems with the header. My dang picture won't show up. And I don't have my columns showing yet either. I am hoping that tomorrow I will get it figured out.

In between working on that, the piano man came and tuned our piano (it sounds awesome now). The electrician came and replaced the main breaker in the office as it had gone bad. And the heat pump guy came and found our freeon leak and got it squared away. It's nice to get some things done that we had to put off.

Daniel came home last night We were very glad to see him! We sang karaoke, enjoyed the lovely night and just in general were happy he was home.

Friday

Today a gentleman came to do some work on our deck. It needed a good washing and better staining. The guy we hired to do it last year, didn't do a very good job and it was showing this spring. So we wanted to protect our investment and have a better job done. Jacob was working hard on that today.

I worked a little on my blog (got a small thing figured out) I have been working on my granny blanket. I made cookies for our dinner coming up on Sunday. Since Daniel was out of town last weekend, we are having a family meal this Sunday.

I am making a mushroom pot roast, green bean casserole, veggie tray, some steam fresh veggies, couscous salad, spaghetti salad, biscuits, olives, apple pie, cookies and ice cream....That ought to fill our tummies! I will make the two salads tomorrow

Katrina is not feeling well. Her head hurts, her throat hurts, she is running a fever, doesn't want to eat, has the chills and is whiny. I think she may have the flu. And I thought we were going to get away with not getting it. I was feeling a little achy earlier, but took some ibuprofen and better now. Maybe it was just sympathy pains....I can hope, right!!!!

Hope you had a great week too!

Danger Melissa Markham! Danger!

"Melissa....what are you doing?"

That is the question that the H.A.L. 9000 is asking me as I start copying my templates and indexes to notepad documents (heck, I am asking myself the same question!) Fortunately, there is no airlock here for HAL to throw me out of!

The Robot is gearing up and shouting...."Danger Melissa Markham! Danger!"

"What on earth are you doing?" you, my faithful reader, are wondering out loud.

Well, it's like this. I use Movable Type for the basis of my blog. And several months ago, Movable Type upgraded. The new Movable Type is lovely...it will allow me to have two sidebars....count them, people! TWO!!! And it will allow me to use CAPTCHA...which is particularly inviting to me as I got hit with 80 comments last night from the same source...spamming comments. (You don't even want to know what words I was thinking). And it will mean that when you go to an article, my sidebars will still be there (right now, my article sits all alone on its page.

It also means that my blog will look completely different..which bums me a bit because I really like my fonts and pictures, but with some work I can recapture some of that. So, I have copied all of my templates into notebook, and saved them to my desk top. I have said prayers and crossed my fingers.

As soon as I finish typing this post, I will go and apply my new settings. From what Daniel tells me, all of my posts will still be intact. The work will come as I try to sort out my sidebars. It took my computer literate husband days (which is why I have put this off so long).

So cross your fingers and wish me luck...as I push the button while ignoring Hal and The Robot in their pleas for me to stop what I am doing!

40 Years Into The Future

Today my hubby sent me a link to a cool blog article from Modern Mechanix. This article was taken from Mechanix Illustrated and was originally written in 1968. You will love reading it, I think!

There are things they were right on the money about...flat screen televisions, laptops, locator systems in cars, robots, smart appliances, and televisions that take up entire walls.

There are other things that they really missed out on, like the air cushion cars that can drive 250 mph! And the domed climate controlled cities...for example.

I wonder where we will be 40 years from now and what the vision is that someone has for our future?

One of the things that I think is funny about the article is the similarity to the Jetsons. The Jetsons first first aired in 1962. Wonder if the author of the article was a fan?

Movie Review: The Painted Veil

Last night I watched a movie I had borrowed from Netflix. The title was The Painted Veil. This is a period story It is mostly set in 1920s China It is a historical love story The cholera epidemic plays a large role in this movie.

But the real story is between a man and a woman A marriage that comes 1/2 out of love and 1/2 out of a desire to escape family. Mistakes are made and a husband who has been wronged seeks to punish the wife that has hurt him. Trial and time work to heal the wounds and true love blossoms The end isn't the happy one we might wish for, but it is uplifiting and it offers us hope that redemption is possible.

I give it 2 thumbs up.

One of My Favorite Vacations - Hilton Head Island

My husband and I met in August of 1990. A year later, things were going well. We felt like we had the world by the tail. We were both working good full time jobs. We both were embarking on second jobs that we hoped to turn into our own businesses (he-computers, me- Tupperware). We had just purchased our first real computer and we had hopes that we would be able to buy our first home within the year

We decided a vacation was in order. We wanted to go to the beach, but we wanted to go to a beach that was a bit out of the ordinary We looked around and decided that Hilton Head South Carolina seemed like a perfect place to visit. It seemed a bit exotic...after all, it was an island and it was some place we had never been. We also made plans to visit nearby Savannah and Charleston.

It was an awesome vacation and one of the best we have had. Hilton Head Island is quiet It is known for its beautiful beaches, wonderful golf courses, and more serene setting We stood in the ocean and dug up sand dollars with our toes. We drove to Charleston for the day and enjoyed a lovely carriage ride and some sight seeing. We also took a day trip to Savannah. We took a ghost walk tour (that was fantastic!) And we ate at the Pirate House...that was awesome! We dined in wonderful restaurants, enjoyed lovely beaches, and drank yummy tropical drinks.

Hilton Head SCholds a special place in our memories because it was our virst vacation together.

Mustaches, Performances, and Easter Egg Hunts

Last week, Katrina opened a French cafe. She played a CD I had purchased that was of Parisian music. She set up her cafe and played her music and she felt like a little black paint would complete the scene for us...

I think she looks more like Jack Sparrow instead of a Parisian garcon...what do you think?

Friday, Jack and Katrina had friends come to visit. They came up with very different forms of entertainment.

Katrina and Kaylie were busy being roller skating, singing divas:

Jack and Brandon were busy doing what boys do best...playing video games...

After a fun sleepover for the children, Saturday saw us gathered at the church for our Easter Egg Hunt.

The children gathered in the Fellowship Hall and listened to the Resurrection Story while some of the adults went out and hid dozens upon dozens upon dozens of eggs. Some of the adults stayed and listened too (and practiced crowd control).

After the story time, we released the children. Before they scurried out, colorful eggs littered the ground. Moments later, it was locusts had descended....the eggs had disappeared!

Isn't the sky gorgeous?

I hope you had a lovely Easter weekend as well!

Searching For Proper Business Real Estate?

This can be a bit of a tricky thing to do. A couple of years ago, there was a business opportunity that we thought might be opening up while we currently have an single wide trailer that we have converted into an office, it is small and not really able to hold more than a couple of people. With the opportunity rearing on the horizon, we knew we must find some commercial real estate to lease.

We are in a unique situation: geographically we are between two medium size cities and between two small towns It was hard deciding whether to go for the conveniences offered by the larger cities (airports, more hotels, and more options for offices) or for one of the smaller towns which had more of a 'hometown' appeal We were going to be brining in some fellow computer consultants and contractors from around the country, so in the end we decided on going with one of the larger towns

Unfortunately the business opportunity ended up passing us by. But who knows what will lie in our future?

Rare Leatherback Turtles Gain Protection in Costa Rica - these turtles come out of the water to lay their eggs on beaches around the world. Scientists and volunteers now have governmental backing to protect these precious nests from poaching and beach development.

Word War II Ships Finally Found Off Australia - The H.M.A.S. Sydney sank on November 19, 1941, in a battle with a German vessel, the D.K.M. Kormoran. Rudd said he had instructed the Defense Department to contact relatives of the sailors who died aboard the Sydney about the find, and described the wreck as a tomb for Australian sailors that would be protected as a sacred site.

Stone Age Hand Axes Found at Bottom of North Sea An amateur archaeologist has found an unprecedented collection of Stone Age hand axes among material collected at the bottom of the North Sea. Jan Meulmeester of the Netherlands found 28 axes, possibly up to 100,000 years old, in marine sand and gravel scooped up by a British construction materials supplier. During ice-age periods of the Paleolithic era, which ended about 10,000 years ago, sea levels were lower and the North Sea was grassland hunting grounds.

New Bird Found in Indonesia - There's a reason why the Togian white-eye is so elusive—there just aren't many of the tiny yellow-green birds left. I love stories like this!

Workers Uncovering Mummified Dinosaur - Unlike almost every other dinosaur fossil ever found, the Edmontosaurus named Dakota—a duckbilled dinosaur found in southwestern North Dakota in 1999 and announced to the public last December (see story)—is covered by fossilized skin that is hard as iron. It's among just a few mummified dinosaurs in the world, say the researchers who are slowly freeing it from a 65-million-year-old rock tomb.

Volcanic Moon Creates Glowing Aurora Spots on Jupiter - Auroras were first spotted on Jupiter in 1979, and astronomers have known since the 1990s that the planet's polar light shows are hundreds of times more powerful than Earth's auroras—with bands and curtains that can get as big as Earth itself. Scientists think that Jupiter and its fiery moon Io are working in concert to cause these seemingly nonstop auroras.

Saturn Moon Titan May Have Underground Ocean - Saturn's moon Titan may have an underground ocean on which its crust slides like a giant, floating icecap, pushed and pulled by climate-driven winds.

Centuries-Old Supernova "Echoes" Detected - In two recent studies, astronomers concluded that the supernova was visible from Earth around the year 1600 and was unusually bright and energetic. What's puzzling scientists is why people apparently didn't see the original explosion 400 years ago.

Hundreds of Salt Deposits Spotted on Mars- Evidence of a dense brine that once oozed on Mars could bring new vigor to the search for salt-loving life-forms on the red planet. The find gives more credence to theories of a wet Martian past—and it confirms the presence of chloride minerals on Mars, which some researchers have suspected for years but only now have the tools to find.

Movie Short Review: Mr. Krueger's Christmas

When we were at the library this week, an interesting DVD caught my eye. The title: Mr. Krueger's Christmas. Now I know it isn't Christmas, but it has a plain beige cover and it says it stars Jimmy Stewart and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

I love Jimmy Stewart and the Mormon Tabernacle Choir produces beautiful music, so I brought it home. The story is lovely and if you get a chance, I advise you to try and see it. The story with Jimmy Stewart is only about 26 mintues long and it is excellent. Then there are other features which show the beginning of the Mormon faith, the Nativity and Christmas songs sung by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

The movie has lots of heart and Jimmy Stewart does a fantastic job portraying a lonely man with a heart and imagination as big as all outdoors.

Guess what, I was looking for a picture of Jimmy Stewart in this role and I found the whole thing on YouTube!

Enjoy!

Price Comparisons- often helpful, but be careful

There are a lot of products on the market today that are designed to help us lose weight. Everything from diet pills to exercise equipment to special foods and drinks. And sometimes all of that gets to be a bit overwhelming. Which product after all is the best? Which one is going to work? I believe a lot of them work, but they don't work for everyone. And then there are the prices...how do you find the best prices for the best diet pills? There are sites that can help you sort through the mess, but check them out carefully because some of them have an agenda. If you research, they might be promoting 'their pill' as the best.

Recapping the Week

Another busy week has come and gone.

Monday

Some school work, some other odds and ends that needed taking care of, then we took Daniel to pick up his Cougar from the shop. He hit a deer back in October and it had an oil leak, but it is all fine and dandy now. After we dropped him off, it was two hours of piano lessons, then a trip to Sam's and a trip to Food Lion.

Tuesday

Tuesday, we did our school work, got piano practice completed and then headed for Bedford. We met some friends at a park there (unfortunately, it was freezing) and we hung out for a bit while Jessie reviewed some sefl-defense moves with the kids. Jessie will be getting her black belt last week and she is very good with children, and we really appreciate her doing this. She teaches the children a few simple things and it makes me feel better. Afterwards, we went to a new Chinese restaurant for dinner. Then we went to the Bedford library to pick up some books. The kids watched the movie, The Bee, while I perused the library book sale.

Wednesday

We got to stay home...that was so awesome! We did school work, the kids put down some mulch and we straightened up a little and we vegged a lot.

Thursday

School work in the morning and then in the afternoon we had a 4-H class. Yesterday the children learned a lot about forestry. It was very interesting. While we were listening to the presenters, I worked some more on my granny afghan. After the 2 hour meeting, then the officers stayed and met as they continued to try and work their way through creating our club bylaws. They are being very thorough and the kids are getting a good idea of what meetings can sometimes be like. After 2 hours, they had gotten through 1/2 a page. We still have 1 1/2 pp to go! By 6:30, we were hungry and 30 minutes from home so we headed to Hardees. In between all of that, I was busy getting those freebies together for you.

Friday

Today has been another busy day. I had phone calls to make. We own two properties, one for our home and one for dh's office when he is home. The well pump has gone out at the office, so I had to call about that. We also want to put in another concrete sidewalk. When we built our deck last year, we had a concrete sidewalk put in and we love it, Our front sidewalk is white rock and with my knee being not quite stable, it is hard to walk on. Plus people in heels don't like it and for our elderly visitors, it is hard to traverse, so I called the fellow who fixed us up with our last sidewalk and he will be coming out to price another one. I also called around trying to find someone to give us an estimate on having our deck powercleaned and stained. The guy who built it did a great job building it, but not so great with staining it and we want it to last. I changed the sheets on my bed, did several loads of laundry, cleaned hamster cages and the litter box, gathered trash, cleaned one bathroom, watched a movie with the kids and got them through the things they needed to do. This afternoon we went and picked up their friends who are spending the night. Today I have spoken with my mom, my stepfather, my oldest stepson, my husband, my mother-in-law, and my dad, each for about 1/2 hour...my ear is tired!

Addiction...a Growing Problem

I was lucky growing up. At least, I guess it was part luck, and perhaps it was part of me being who I am. I never ever smoked a cigarette. I didn't ever drink too much until I reached college, and then only on a few occasions and I never was approached by anyone offering me illegal drugs, nor did I have a desire to seek them out.

I had a grandmother who was virtually a chain smoker. I hated the way it smelled, the way the nicotine yellowed her fingers and her teeth and the way everything about her smelled of cigarettes. My parents always told me that if I wanted to try a cigarette, they would go out and buy me a pack and let me light up. I never had any desire to take them up on their offer (that tactic doesn't work with all children, but it worked with me...that and my natural aversion to the stuff).

I have family members who struggle with alcoholism. As a person with Native American heritage, I know that the risks of becoming addicted to alcohol are high, so I always tried never to turn to alcohol to make me feel better. There were parties that I went to when I drank too much, but if it ever crossed my mind that I was thinking about a drink because I was feeling down or stressed, I walked away. When I was in high school and college, I thought that was enough. As I have read about alcoholism, I have come to realize that it is not just an act of will power. Alcoholism is a disease, just like diabetes or cancer. Some of us are afflicted with us and it can grab hold of us at any time in our life. But my previous actions at least gave me the illustion of control.

Illegal drugs held no appeal. Maybe it was because I heard just enough about them to know that taking them just once could be enough to screw up my entire life. Maybe it was because I was just happy with my life the way it was and didn't feel the need to enhance it, but I had absolutely no interest in experimenting with them.

So was I lucky or was it just my personality? I have other things I am addicted to. Chocolate for instance. My weight would lead credence to the fact that I am addicted to food. I definitely eat more than I should. Sometimes I am addicted to work. I get started with something and I don't want to stop until it is complete and I feel immense satisfaction at that completion.

Regardless of the reason that I have managed to steer clear of many addictions, it is becoming increasingly clear in our society that more and more people struggle with this issue. Thank goodness that they can get help in the form of addiction treatment in rehabilitation facilities. But it is important as family members that we do not ignore the signs. We must be vigilant so that we can steer our loved ones in the right direction before the substance (whatever that substance may be) takes over their lives. Because an addicted person often can't help themselves.

I ache over some of these young female celebrities that have been in the news in recent years. Not only do I ache for them, for the pressure they must be under and for the way their addictions are ruining their lives, but it makes me worry about the role models being set before my children. I pray that as a country, we will be able to find better ways to fill the voids within us...ways that don't involve addictive substances (illegal or otherwise).

Today's Trivia

This morning we were reading about minerals and I found out something I didn't know before, so I thought I would share. I knew that people have always treasured salt. I remember it being a more expensive and rare commodity in the pioneer days.

What I didn't know was this:

Roman soldiers were paid partly with a salarium: a quantity of salt. Salarium became salary, the money you earn by working...

I love homeschooling..I learn something new most every day!

2 Contest Winners

For the Gloves in a Bottle contest, I have one winner (I didn't get 20 comments, maybe next time). The Random Number Generator chose number 7...so Raven won the prize!

For the Experiencing the Resurrection contest, the random number generator spit out the number 5...which makes Charlotte the lucky winner!

Congrats! Sorry there isn't more for everyone!

Movie Review: Astronaut Farmer

Last night the children and I sat down and watched The Astronaut Farmer (better late than never, right?). I enjoyed the movie. It was a nice role for Billy Bob Thornton, and unusual as he doesn't often play a nice guy. It is a movie about having dreams and pursuing them. There is even a homeschooling moment (though I don't think he filled out the proper paperwork.) There was a moment that I was quite taken aback (and if you have already seen the movie, you probably know what I mean). I was expecting one thing to happen, and I was shocked by what happened instead.

This is an inspiring movie. A movie about having dreams and working to see them come true (no matter what others may say or the failures you may have to overcome). This is a movie about a family working together and believing in one another. You can't go wrong with watching it.

Anti Snor Therapeutic Ring...Hope for Snorer's Spouses!

My husband snores...and I don't mean the gentle snore of a young child or of a sleeping pet. I mean, he snores so loud that it rattles the windows, shakes the doors and has been heard from 20 feet away in our home. His snoring is directly related to his weight. When he gains, his snoring volume goes up exponentially. When he loses weight, he becomes quiet as a church mouse. But as we all know, losing weight isn't as easy as we would like it to be. When he is snoring like that, I find myself having to sleep on the other end of the house. Otherwise, I simply cannot sleep. I have tried ear plugs but they don't work.

So I was very excited when I was approached to try a new product called the Anti Snor Therapeutic Ring. This ring makes use of accupuncture principles to help stop people from snoring. We read amazing testimonies and awaited the ring's arrrival most anixiously.

The very first night Daniel tried it on, we noticed a difference in the volume level of his snoring. We could no longer hear him snoring in the next room. It was incredible. He was still snoring, but it wasn't the rattle the windows and shake the doors kind of snoring. The next night that he wore it, it didn't seem to have the same effect, not quite as quiet. We plan to try the ring out when he is home again (he travels during the week and is only home every other weekend). i'll let you know if it works out better. But in the meantime, I thought you would like to do some research into this item in case you are living with a snorer too!

(Of course, he claims I snore too...but I never hear it!)

A Child's Calendar - Poems by John Updike

This week we are taking some time to enjoy some poetry. One of the books we are reading from is A Child's Calendar with poems by John Updike and illustrations by Trina Schart Hyman.

The illustrations are lovely and their is a poem for each month. The children got a kick out of reading the poems for their month. I enjoyed the way in a few words, Mr. Updike captured the essence of each month and I enjoyed the pictures that had so much in them to see. Here is one for you to enjoy.

MARCH

The sun is nervous
As a kite
That can't quite keep
Its own string tight.

Some days are fair,
And some are raw.
The timid earth
Decides to thaw.

Shy budlets peep
From twigs on trees,
And robins join
The chickadees.

Pale crocuses
Poke through the ground
Like noses come
To sniff around.

The mud smells happy
On our shoes.
We still wear mittens,
Which we lose.

The Internet...27 years ago....

I met my husband in August of 1990. The following July, we made a huge purchase...with the intention of using said purchase for him to become an independent computer consultant. We spent four thousand dollars...yes, you read that right (and that was 1990 dollars) on a complete, top of the line 286 desk top system...yes, those words were '286' as in slow computer....of course, it didn't seem slow to us at the time... I had only been exposed to computers in college and highschool. A year long class in basic when I was in highschool (back when back ups of our work were done on tape cassettes). And then in college, we each had an account that we could access, but I didn't use mine a lot. I had an electric typewriter and that did fine for me.

One of the things Daniel and I really enjoyed doing with our computer was getting on the Internet.Back then, there weren't pretty pages and tabs and places to store your favorites. It mostly looked like a black screen with a dos command line prompt. The screens were black with white words. We played Backgammon with people in Greece and we thought that was just the coolest thing. Never mind that the background was black and the little pieces were white (x's and o's I think). It was just so neat to be playing with someone on the other side of the world.

The Internet has come a long way since then! And now I have a blog that people can visit from all over the world (and I visit people from around the world as well). It is soooo cool!

My Year as an Office Manager

When I worked for the College of William and Mary as Parking Services Office Manager, I had a small staff under me. Actually, the hiearchy was a bit murky. My boss, Theo had an administrative type assistant. Then there were four people who went out and about and ticketed cars. They mostly reported to Theo, but worked closely with me. Then there was another gal, who ran dispatch for them and was technically under my supervision. Then I had a few college students working for me. I got to interview them, hire them and unfortunately I once had to fire one girl. She was just too busy with other things going on and was often late and unreliable. I hated doing it, but that is part of a job as a manager...to make sure that all the parts in the office are working together and performance management.

When there were tiffs and misunderstandings, I had to step in and try to solve them. I loved my job there, and it really gave me an opportunity to put my organizational skills to use. I also helped them implement several new programs which appealed to my creative side. Being the person in charge of deciding how others were doing their job was probably my least favorite part. As my husband is always telling me, I am just a big marshmallow! I preferred to work on what I was capable of doing, not sit around and pointing out where others were messing up...except for that one gal...she really was just not right for the job.

Book Review: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See

Back in November, I won a book from Katrina. I didn't know I had actually won the book until the beginning of January because I wasn't signed in (thought I was) when I left the comment. But she and an industrious friend tracked me down. Wasn't that sweet! And then due to a mistake, I actually ended up with two books instead of one. I am finally getting around to reading the first of the two books. It is called "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" and is written by Lisa See. This book is a New York Times Bestseller and I can see why.

The writing is compelling. The lives of the two main characters are filled with tragedies and a smattering of triumphs. We follow these two young girls from about the age of 6 until the age of 80 for one of them. I cried out when I read of the foot binding process. I had no idea how that actually occured and as I read the description and thought of putting my own 7 year old daughter through that ordeal, I literally gasped.

I enjoyed the history as well. I love nothing better than learning when it is wrapped up in a well written tale. I was struck by the vast differences between the Chinese culture and our own, but I was also struck by the similarities. A life long friend is something every woman longs for. Friends that you can be yourself with, who will comfort you without trying to change you, and who will not hold your confidences against you are a true treasure.

All is not as it seems in this story and there are layers upon layers of secrets. I heartily recommend that you check this book out either by borrowing it from your local library our purchasing it. Either way, I guarantee you will be glad you read it.

Gloves In A Bottle - A Shielding Lotion Giveaway

I was recently sent a bottle of Gloves in a Bottle to test out and review.

Gloves in a Bottle is one of the new shielding lotions that has arrived on the market in the last couple of years. A shielding lotion is better than a moisturizer because it actually helps your skin behave the way it should. With a moisturizer, you trick your skin into thinking your body is producing enough moisture and if you miss a moisturizer application, your skin is often drier than it was before. But with a shielding lotion, it is like you are creating an invisible barrier between your skin and the world. So when the deeper layers produce moisture, they hit that barrier and the moisture stays in instead of evaporating or being wiped off. Also the 'bad stuff' (detergents, etc) bounces off. Check out these cool graphics (pictures really are worth a thousand words)!

Please note that this does not mean you don't have to wear protective clothing when you are working around dangerous chemicals and whatnot, but it does mean that you will have added protection when you are doing dishes, bathing children or going through multiple hand washes for whatever reason.

Gloves in a Bottle is a good shielding lotion and the price is right! It is less than 1/2 the price of other shielding lotions (and they come in smaller bottles).

Soooo...if you would like to give this product a try (I mean, seeing is believing, right?), then be sure to leave a comment below. Because along with my 8 oz bottle that I received, I received 3 samples that contain 2-4 applications in each of them. I will send all three samples to one lucky winner! So just comment below, I will draw a name and you may win some shielding lotion!

This drawing is open to anyone who chooses to comments (even if you live in Timbuktu). I will hold my drawing Wednesday night sometime after 6 p.m. So hurry, hurry! And tell your friends! If I get more than 20 comments, I will have a second drawing and I will give away the 8 oz bottle of Gloves in a Bottle (I have only used a little of it, so it is practically full!) If you do share the information with your friends, let me know so I can give you an extra chance in the drawing!

Sometimes in Bloggy land, you will meet a person whose true goal in life is helping others. I met such a gal last fall, her name is Laura Williams and if you haven't heard of Laura, you should take some time to go visit her blog.

Laura's blog is devoted to bringing her readers not only the best contest information out there in Internet land, but she shares recipes, reviews, and frugal tips. Today in a Nutshell

I overslept a bit. The kids and I got ready and off to church we went. After Sunday School, I went around and gave all of the kids a Children's Bulletin that I had made and told them to be looking for them on the table coming in starting next week. They seemed to like them. After church, I spoke with the pastor's wife, Ruby, about next week's Easter Egg hunt. I am in charge this year, but feel a bit funny because I don't know what they have done in the past so I don't want to do anything 'wrong'.

Came home, got Daniel, said hi to Ashley, the sitter, then Daniel and I left. Since Daniel is only home every other weekend right now, and since holidays such as Easter and Katrina's birthday are fast approaching, it was necessary for he and I to go see what we could find in the stores. We had a nice lunch at Olive Garden and successful shopping at Toys 'R Us.

Daniel wanted to stop by Best Buy and check out movies. So we did. On our way there, I told him I had figured out what I wanted for Mother's Day this year. Last year I saved up my money and bought myself a Nintendo DS Lite. I loved playing with it, but when my nephew was very ill back in the fall, I loaned it to him (his family doesn't have much money and he didn't own one). He liked it so much, that my husband's uncle wanted to buy him mine so that Jonathon would have one (but Paul didn't want to have to go to the store looking for one). It worked out well for us because we needed the money at the time and Jonathan needed some entertainment.

Anyway, I have missed my DS, so I told Daniel I wanted a new one for Mother's Day. Usually I don't ask for anything for Mother's Day except for them to do nice things for me and maybe take me out to eat. Well, when we went in to Best Buy, he purchased a DS for me (the red and black one) and a game (Brain Age). I couldn't believe it. He said he didn't want to forget. I told him he should wrap it up and give it to me on Mother's Day, but he told me to go ahead and enjoy it now.

We got home a little after 4. I wrapped birthday presents, then went online to purchase a couple of other things I wanted for Katrina. Then it was time to go to Awanas. We arrived back home around 8:30. I did laundry, washed dishes and now, now, I am going to go play my game Night!

National Geographic Headlines Week of March 10: Archaeology, Astronomy, Animals

Rome Subway Digs Reveal Medieval, Renaissance Treasures -- It never ceases to amaze me how we continue to find signs of our past even in the seemingly most developed of areas.

"Monstrous" Robot to Be Assembled in Space -- it would be really cool to watch this be assembled and even cooler to visit the space station. And isn't it wonderful to see nations working together for a common goal?

Pygmy Hippo Caught on Camera - This photograph shows that the pygmy hippo is still surviving in war torn West Africa.

Ancient Graves Found in Greece - another example of how we can find amazing treasures while expanding for our current civilization needs (in this case a subway). About a thousand graves have been discovered, some with ancient treasures inside.

Colorful Harlequin Frog Discovered - Look at this colorful amphibian from Columbia. Cute, isn't he!?

Mysterious Meteorites Stymie Scientists -- Venus, the moon? Where on earth do these mysterious, smelly, salty rocks come from? Perhaps scientists will figure it out soon!

Dolphin Saves Stuck Whales, Guides Them Back to Sea -- you have heard how dogs are a man's best friend, well, perhaps dolphins are a whale's best friend. There have been documented cases of dolphins helping save people before, but this is the time this type of interspecies rescue has been noted.

Ancient Brain Surgery Patient Found? - Greek archaeologists believe a large hole in the skull of a third-century A.D. skeleton is rare evidence of ancient—and failed—brain surgery.
The patient, a young woman, is believed to have died during or shortly after the operation. I guess it is better to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all.

Egypt Catches Mummy Smugglers - yeah for the Egyptians cracking down on grave robbers!

Friday: Spring is Springing and A Week in Review

Yep, folks, the weather is warming up here in the foothills of Virginia. Not that it was ever that cold this past winter, not that we saw more than 3 inches of snow this past winter...but now that spring is springing about us, we are all happy to get back outside. We are enjoying sitting out on our deck doing school work. We love the warmth of the sun as we sit on the deck reading a good book. The birds are fill the air with their lovely song and the yard beckons us to pick up last winter's debris.

How can one step outside on a sunny 70 degree day filled with a cavorting breeze and happy birds and not want to just sit out there forever and enjoy the blessing of this beautiful and amazing world we live in? Why am I in here typing when I could be out there? It is because of you, gentle reader, that I have taken a brief detour indoors to let you know what's going on in my neck of the woods.

Saturday, March 8th. The children had friends over Friday night. Saturday morning, everyone was up early because Katrina and Jack had to be in Lynchburg at the Gold Cup Competition. 40 minutes to get there, 40 minutes to come home and 20 minutes there... The kids spent the rest of the afternoon playing while I watched Madame Bovary in my room and worked on my granny afghan. After the children had been returned to their families, we did a quick clean up of the house because we were hosting the Subdivision meeting where we would be discussing such weighty subjects as where to put gravel on the raod this spring season.

Sunday, March 9th. We remembered to turn our clocks ahead (I am still missing that hour of sleep) and we arrived at Sunday School on time. Which was a great relief to our music director as Katrina was playing the special music for Sunday. Katrina's friend came home with us for the afternoon. I worked more on my granny afghan and I watched Neverwas. Then it was off to Awanas.

Monday, March 10th School work in the morning, stuff eggs in the afternoon (I am in charge of the church Easter egg hunt and some people who have donated brought in the eggs and the candy, but not the candy in the eggs. Plus I had bought 12 dozen eggs myself to stuff. Then Katrina had her group piano lesson. While she was at that, I picked up a prescription at CVS and a couple of needed pet items at Walmart. We watched a lot of Jim Henson's The Storyteller today.

Tuesday, March 11th School work in the morning, then off we went to meet some other homeschoolers at the local bowling alley and we bowled a couple of games. Katrina was really tickled when she won the first game. Jack came in second both times. Next Jack went to his group piano lesson while Katrina and I went to Goodwill and picked up a couple of springy outfits. Katrina found a really cute Alvin Chipmunks shirt and an adorable pair of purple sandals. I found three new outfits for church and Jack got a cool astronomy t-shirt. Next we went to Lowe's and picked up a huge roll of black plastic, then took books back to the library and then went to the grocery store.

Wednesday, March 12th School work in the morning. Then we spent the afternoon visiting some friends and Karen and I discussed curriculum while the kids played. I am going to be going with Saxon again next year and Shurley English (for the first time). I also think I am going to be using Apologia science. We will continue with Natrual Speller and Story of the World. We came home and put the black paper down to prepare for a mulch delivery on Thursday.

We also made peanut butter cookies today and took them to a gentleman in our church who does a lot (helps with Awanas, visits nursing homes, greets people at the door and plays guitar). He fell down last week and broke two ribs. We wanted him to know we missed him.

Thursday, March 13th I spent a lot of today working on church children bulletins. We are putting them together ourselves. I had a great deal of fun doing this and actually got 2 1/2 months worth done.

I also made two lasagnas (one for us and one for a new mom in our church) and delivered one lasagna. Plus we visited and I got to hold the little baby. I had forgotten how tiny they are in the beginning!

We also spent about four hours laying down some mulch. Last year, I decided to mulch the front yard. We ran out of money and my knee went out and the yard didn't quite get finished. There was a small section in the front and then there was a triangle between our two sidewalks. You can see the pictures of last year's work and the waiting triangle if you click the above link.

The triangle in particular has fretted me because I have had to walk past it every day for months and the black paper we had put down had become shredded, most of the grass had been killed (as was my plan) and there was mud and it was awful looking. So now we have some money and I ordered another load of mulch. Because of my knee I told myself, I would only do a little a day. But after having looked at that mess for so long and with hubby coming home today and with the weather being so nice yesterday, I actually completely did the triangle, with the help of the kids. Particularly Katrina. In fact, Katrina and I were so close to the end when it got dark last night, that I turned on the lights of the Xterra and we worked by the lights of it so we could finish up. Isn't it lovely? (we still need to trim the black plastic and we hope to pour another concrete sidewalk this year where the white rock sidewalk is now. Easier on people with knee problems).

And here is the mulch we have left to work with for the remaining patch and the barespots.

We still have the small patch in the front yard to do and a few bare spots to recover, but the biggest part is done and I am so pleased! And my back and shoulders and knee are talking loudly to me today...when did my body stop being willing to do the things I wanted it to do?

Friday, March 14, 2008 We have done some school work today. Usually Friday is our day off, but since we ended up getting caught up in other things yesterday, we are doing it today. Daniel is on his way home and will be here by 6 pm. The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing and the world is a beautiful place to live in!

For those of you who have lasted all the way to here...thanks for staying with me! Now get outside and do something springy!

Movie Review: Jim Henson's The Storyteller

Last week when I was at the library looking at the DVD selection and trying to decide what I would borrow, another lady was looking too. I picked up Apt Pupil and she mentioned what a good movie it was. I replied that I knew as I had seen it years ago. Then she pointed to another DVD called Jim Henson's The Storyteller.

I thought it looked delightful so I brought it home. There are two discs in the definitive collection. One disc has nine little known fairytales and one disc has four Greek myths. These are wonderful episodes with fantastical creatures that only Jim Henson can create. The Greek myths are advised for children ages 8 and up. Katrina, Jack and I have really been enjoying these tales.

The fairy tales are told by John Hurt who is the Storyteller (he also plays Mr. Ollivander in Harry Potter). The Greek Myths are told by Michael Gambon (the second Dumbledore).

We give this collection 3 thumbs up!

Travel Luggage - Get the Good Stuff Because it Pays off in the Long Run

Daniel spends a lot of time in airports and on airplanes as he travels back and forth between Illinois and Virginia. His laptop case had a shoulder strap and the weight of carrying it with two computers and other asundries tucked inside was getting to be too much for him. I lifted that case and it weighed a ton! Just imagine carrying that all over an airport...

So anyway, he got to looking over some luggage that would be more airport and travel friendly. One of the many choices to choose from was Briggs and Riley - the Work Collection. There are several pieces that can be chosen from depending on the needs of the traveler in your family. Daniel now has three pieces that work well together and help him carry all of his belongings back and forth without pulling his arm out of joint. Daniel's new luggage is well constructed and should last a long, long time.

Movie Review: Neverwas

I watched a very good movie this weekend called Neverwas. Neverwas is full of star power! Nick Nolte, Ian McKellen, Aaron Eckhart, and William Hurt.

In this story a young man is trying to come to terms with a past he doesn't quite understand. And with guilt that comes from his feeling that he failed in the worst kind of way. As he tries to atone for his past by working in a psychiatric hospital and helping others, he soon finds himself treating a patient who knew his father. The patient has an insanity that is intricately entwined with the young doctor.

In the end the young doctor has to let go of his doubts and believe for both his patient and himself to find peace.

I gave this movie five stars on Netflix! It is one of those rare hidden gems that you may not have heard of and that you might overlook if you were browsing movies to watch. Let me assure you that it is well worth your time to see!

What's Up With Women's Pants Sizes?

I have a question...why is it that when we buy a man pants, the pants have two sizes...the waist and the length, but when we buy women's pants, we find no such ease of purchase!

We can buy petit, average and tall to be sure, but why aren't pants offered to us via the inseams like they are for men? I mean for men you can get pants of lengths 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, etc. Why must we be bound to have pants of the wrong lengths so that we have to hem them to get them to fit?

Women, unite! Complain! Make your voice heard! We deserve to be able to shop just as easily as men do for proper fitting pants!

Save Money By Improving Your Credit Score

One of the Christmas movies I enjoy watching is An American Christmas Carol. The Scrooge person is played by Henry Winkler (remember The Fonz?). He doesn't seem like a likely Scrooge does he? In this American Christmas Carol, we find ourselves in America in the late 1800s and Scrooge discovers credit. He takes this newly developing business that banks and companies have come up with where you let people buy items on credit and charge them interest. And if they don't make their payments, the lender gets to take the item! He makes the comment that "It is not unheard of to get 150% of the original price or more".

Now, I am not sure who first invented the idea of credit, particularly where interest and repossession are involved. There is mention of loans in the bible, but there is also the fact that every seven years, debts were to be forgiven (and my guess is that is where the 7 years comes from regarding how long a bankruptcy can be listed on your credit report). Fortunately, we are past the point where we get thrown into debtor's prison. Can you imagine...you are in debt so they throw you in prison (where you can't make a living) and there you stay until your debt is paid. How many of us would be in jail now if this was still the practice?

We have become a nation of people that live on credit. We use credit in emergencies and we use credit to finance our latest want list. There are people who never run into credit problems. They always pay on time, they never spend more than they can repay, and they don't run into situations where their credit starts ruling their lives. In my early credit life, I only used a credit card to build up my credit. I paid the balance each month and was on top of things.

However, this doesn't always work out for people. And I have been there. We have had times when the credit card was the only thing that kept food on the table and gas in the car. I think there are many more of us who have found ourselves in that situation. And it is not always brought on by poor choices, indeed it is often brought on by the lack of job security in the modern world. Whereas people used to get a job and stay in it for decades, now most people stay at a job for 3-5 years before moving on.

Did you know that whenever you miss a payment, even just one, it gets reported on your credit report? Did you know that if you miss a payment on credit card A and credit card B finds out about it, they can raise your rates? Are you aware that on some credit cards you are paying as much as 30% interest? When was the last time you really looked at your credit card bill to figure out how much interest you are paying?

Don't despair though. Just like everything else in the world, when a problem exists, someone else comes along with a way to fix it. Have you ever checked out a credit repair service? Their job is to help you with credit repair. And many of these credit repair services are free of charge to you. They receive their money from the credit card companies. The credit card companies pay them to help them get people's debts straightened out. And you can save literally thousands of dollars by trying to repair credit scores.

For instance, say your interest rate goes up 1%, just 1% (and let me tell you if you have been delinquent in paying, chances are that it has gone up way more than that). And then say you want to get a home loan for $100,000. Well, that extra 1% can cost you $25,000 over thirty years! Take charge of your credit (sorry for the pun). Get your scores improved and if possible throw away the dang things! Personally, I advise keeping one for emergencies (and no I am not referring to a great sale on Jimmy Choo shoes). Some people even go as far as putting that emergency card on ice in the freezer to help keep them from using it unwisely. With a little help and some smart decisions on your part, you can save money by repairing your credit score.

Changing Televisions

Buying a television used to be simple. You went to the store, you picked out the model and you brought it home. But technology has changed that. Now you can get a LCD TV, a Plasma TV, a projection TV. So many choices...so many possibilities. Regardless of what one chooses, regardless of the complexities, television provides us with a much better picture to look at these days.

Have you noticed that televisions have gotten bigger too? Not only is the picture clearer, but it is common for people to own a television with 40 to 60 inch screens. I foresee a future when our television will be as large as a wall and we can either watch a show or a movie on it or we can switch it to look like the great outdoors: a seascape, a mountain scene, another galaxy. Won't that be cool!

National Geographic Headlines Week of March 3rd: Wolves, Hexapus

Here are some interesting headlines from last week's National Geographic Feed:

1. Pronghorn Thrives in Wolves Shadow - The researchers said that during a three-year study, pronghorn fawns were three times more likely to survive in areas dominated by wolves versus those ruled by coyotes. That's because wolves favor larger prey, such as elk or cattle, and generally leave pronghorn alone. .

This is just another great example of how little we know about how components of nature work together (even when we think we have it figured out!)

2. What Do You Call an Octopus with only six legs? A Hexapus, silly! This six-legged octopus is not a new species and doesn't appear to have been affected by an accident. He appears to only have six legs due to a genetic mutation. He is getting around just fine at his home in the British Aquarium.

Window Coverings

When we got married, my inlaws asked what they could get us as a wedding gift. We told them we would really like miniblinds. They put some up all over the house and we were so pleased to have them when we arrived home from our honeymoon. Now, 14 years later, we are on our third set of miniblinds. They get caked with dust, they crack and chip, the strings break, but still they help to darken the rooms when darkening is desired without heavy drapes. But I am thinking about ditching the miniblinds and switching to roller shades.

They are much easier to clean and they look a bit more decorative. I wonder if the springs are any better than they used to be. My memories of roller shades are that sometimes they retract like you wish, sometimes they don't and that sometimes they roll up crooked. What kind of window coverings do you use?

Poking My Head Out to Say Hello

This past week has been incredibly busy without much time to turn around, much less think of interesting things to blog about. After the Science Fair on Thursday, I spent Friday morning trying to catch up with emails, blog reading, laundry and some phone calls I needed to make. A gentleman came by to work on our heat pump (turns out we had a refrigerant leak.) My next door neighbor came by so her 15 yr old daughter could show off her learner's permit, then my neighbor followed me to the local garage so I could drop off the Suburban to be inspected. We returned to the house, Katrina and I ate quickly, then headed to Rustburg for nature class.

We stopped at the dumpster and at the post office(mailing 4-H packages to troops) on our way.

In Nature Class, we made miniature scarecrows (using wooden clothespins, fabric, glue, ties and straw type stuff). We made light houses using batteries, lightbulbs, wires, empty plastic bottles... and then made miniature green houses out of egg cartons and plastic bags. After the class was over, Katrina and I stayed at the Extension Office Building and played cards (Kings in a corner) for about an hour, waiting to meet a friend of Jack's to bring him to our house to visit. We picked up Eric, then headed to get Kayley (Katrina's friend).

On the way, I stopped to get gas. That took longer than it should because my card kept getting rejected. I had paid online Tuesday evening, but the payment hadn't been released by my bank, so Amoco was saying my card didn't have any money on it. That wasn't fun.

We got Kaley, then headed home. The kids played all evening. We had pizza and ice cream for dinner. I did various chores around the house while the kids had fun. They had to go to bed at 11 because Jack and Katrina had Gold Cup piano competition this morning (we had to leave at 8:45).

The boys were up at 6, I was up at 7 and the girls were up by 7:30. We had breakfast, got Jack and Katrina spiffed up to go and away we went. We had a 40 minute drive there. Were there for about 20 minutes, then came home. The kids played and played and played. Jack and Eric mostly played Xbox 360 (Halo 3). Katrina and Kaley played outside in the mud once it stopped raining and before that they played store. While they played, i watched Apt Pupil and Madame Bovary (borrowed from the library).

We took Eric and Kaley home around 4:30, then came back to clean up and have dinner and get ready for our subdivision meeting which was scheduled to be at our house at 7 pm. I am secretary for subdivision. The treasurer and I were here and two other members came. The rest (including the President) were AWOL! We had a brief meeting, discussed business (me calling to have more gravel laid on the road) and then chitchatted for about an hour or so.

Then the neighbors left. I finished watching Madame Bovary while the kids played a bit more. Now we are heading to bed to try and get a jump on the time change.

Tomorrow, maybe I'll tell you about the new phones we got and the DirecTV mixup!

Science Fair Fun

Yesterday our 4-H group had a Science Fair. The kids have been working on their projects over the last month.

I thought you might enjoy seeing them.

Katrina made a homemade volcano. We had so much fun building the volcano and it was the hit yesterday...all the kids wanted to see her explode it again and again! The judges gave her an average score of 90.5 out of 100.

Jack had a bit more challenging project. He found an experiment where you could grow stalagmites and stalactites by running a string between two jars of epsom salt saturated water. The instructions weren't very specific (exact amounts of water and salt were not given) and even though we tried about 8 different things (different string, different types of water and different amounts of salt), it never dripped from the string as it was supposed to. However, about two weeks ago, we started making one by hand (dripping the water into a spot on the board.) In two weeks, of five drops of water a day, it only grew about 1/4 inch so you won't be able to see it, but we thought it was neat.

Anyway, here's some photos of Jack's experiment. He was given an average score of 86.

My mom and stepfather came to the Science Fair to see the work the kids had been doing. It was great to have them along! I love the first picture because everyone is so happy, but I threw in the second as Jim isn't looking up in the first.

My blog is a family friendly blog. Here you will find recipes, posts about our life, contests, book reviews, movie reviews, news about animals, news about astronomy, news about archaeology, musings, tips, product reviews, and whatever thing happens to interest me at any given time.

I live in the Virigina Piedmont in Bedford County. I homeschool my two youngest children (11 and 8) and I have two grown stepsons who are making their way in the world (and doing a pretty good job). My hubby is a computer consultant/mentor/programmer. We have two hamsters, four cats, and two rabbits that live here with us on ten acres of wooded land. We mostly like being off the beaten path (except for when the gas bill comes).

I am a cool weather person, with summer being my least favorite season of the year. I love to read (mostly historical fiction, horror, romance, gothic romance, classics, mystery, and history). I will sometimes read nonfiction, but I have a hard time staying tuned in unless it is something that really interests me.

I enjoy watching movies. Lots and lots of movies. My movie interest mirror my reading interests. I also enjoy comedy and children's movies.

I love to travel and have been blessed to visit a couple dozen states, Canada, and France. I hope to go to Australia, England/Scotland/Ireland, Egypt, and Greece some day. As well as visit the rest of the states here in the U.S.

I enjoy crocheting and needlepoint and counted cross stitch. I love spending time with my children and playing board and video and card games with them.

I love blogging (both reading and writing). I am always amazed when people find what I have to say interesting. I have been writing since I was in elementary school and it has been an integral part of everything I have ever done, whether writing for publication, or writing a company newsletter... I always seem to find a way to fit my passion into my life.

Thanks for stopping by. It is hard to paint a picture of oneself in a few words. So here's a photo! Come back and visit anytime!

Malachi 3:3

I received this story in my email box from a friend. It struck a chord with me and I wanted to share. May it bless you today!

Malachi 3:3 says: "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."

This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.

One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.

That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver.

As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.

The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says: "He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."

She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.

The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.

The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?"

He smiled at her and answered,
"Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it."

If today you are feeling the heat of the fire, remember that God has His eye on you and will keep watching you until He sees His image in you.

Life is a coin. You can spend it anyway you wish, but you can only spend it once.

Five Kind Things Can Change the World

Much like in is exhibited by the Pay It Forward movement, when we do something kind for another person, then they will often go forth and do something kind to someone else.

Amanda tagged me with the Five Kind Things Meme.

Here are the rules:

1. List five kind things you do for yourself. List five kind things you do for your closest friend, partner or child. List five kind things you have done for a stranger.

2. Tag five people.

Remember, kindness begins at home. When we take care of ourselves, then we have the ability to reach out to others. And the kindnesses don't have to involve money, time and consideration are awesome ways to show kindness!

5 kind things I have done for myself:

1. Exercise
2. Carve out time each day to read
3. Make more good eating choices
4. Bought myself a Nintendo DS Lite
5. Noticed something complimentary about my appearance

5 Kind things I have done for my kids and husband:

1. Got up to date tags for my hubby's Jeep that just came out of a year in the shop
2. Helped my children to sell items they no longer wanted
3. Read stories to my children
4. Play games with my children
5. Help my hubby with business matters

5 Kind things I have done for a stranger:

1. Prayed for them
2. Let people out into the road in heavy traffic
3. Let them go in front of me at the grocery store when they have less groceries than I do
4. Held doors for people
5. Given a dollar to a lady at the grocery store who was a dollar short

I am tagging

Whoever feels like playing! I appreciate each and everyone of you who stops by my little corner of the world (that's your kindness to me), so let me share this fun tag with you!

If you play along, let me know and I will link to you here:

1. You're next!

What a Day....

I have been going, going, going all day and just realized that it is 11:20 and I haven't blogged yet today, so here we go.

I was up at 7 a.m. this morning. Daniel had gotten up before me and he announced his check had arrived into the business account. We had a long list of things that needed to be taken care of. This was the first full month's check since he started working in December and we had lots to do with it.

I worked on some of my shipping lists and ordered Daniel's prescriptions from Drugstore.com (I love Drugstore.com...if you have never checked it out, go by). Anyway, I did my strength training exercises, got dressed and headed to the bank to deposit our check for our March bills into our personal account. I stopped by Sheetz, got gas and treated myself to a mocha before returning home. That trip took about an hour.

When I got home, I realized that I needed to go to the DMV to get the stickers for the license plate on Daniel's Jeep. He owns a beautiful 1988 Jeep Scrambler that he bought about 12 years ago and had restored. It has been in the shop since last spring. It took the mechanics awhile to figure out the problem (it was intermittent) and then once they figured it out, Daniel wasn't working, so we asked them to hold onto it until we had funds. So when time came to renew the tags the end of December, we held off. Today he was going to pick it up (and drop off his Cougar for inspection and some other repairs), so he needed to be all legal. I got back in the Xterra and drove to the DMV for the proper stickers. That took another hour.

I came home, finished my coupon clipping and list making. Got the kids to eat some lunch.Talked to Daniel about some issues I needed to deal with while he was gone. Then the kids and I left to head to town around 1:00.

We stopped by the recycling center. We dropped off a prescription at CVS (gonna get that 25.00 gift certificate), then we headed to Walmart. Katrina and Jack were very excited. There haven't been any allowances handed out for months and Jack has been waiting for his belated birthday present. He wanted to get a digital camera. He found just what he wanted at Walmart, but dang it, they were out of stock! So still he waits. The camera was less expensive than he had anticipated, so now he got Halo 3 for the Xbox. Katrina had her allowance and some money she made from selling some of her toys, She bought a cool pirate chest with POTC characters in it (on sale for 5.00), a Star Wars Lego set, an Indiana Jones Lego Set and three of the new Pokemon characters. She had been happily building legos all evening.

I had some much needed supplies to get...you know, bathroom and kitchen cleaners, some new clothes for Jack, and some items from the pharmacy section. Fun stuff! After Walmart, we hit the library. I borrowed three movies: Apt Pupil, Madame Bovary, and Jim Henson's The Storyteller. Then we were off to Food Lion.

Food Lion had some awesome sales today and I had some very good coupons! I saved $77+ on my bill! Wahoo! Then we came home in driving rain. Unloaded in steady rain. Then I had to put everything away. Then it was time for supper. I had some paperwork to take care of. I did dishes. Did I mention that my feet are throbbing? I did dishes, then a fellow homeschooler came by and purchased Katrina's kitchen and a stuffed animal. We visited for awhile.

The kids and I just finished watching Herbie Rides Again. We didn't like it as well as the first movie, but it was good.

So, there you are...if you didn't fall asleep, and I haven't bored you to tears, you now now what I did today:)

Make Your Car Stand Out in a Crowd

When I was a kid, cars still were very distinctive in appearance. Most of them. Nowadays, most of the vehicles on the road resemble one another. Why else would we get lost wandering about parking lots looking for our car? When I drove a 1976 Monte Carlo, it was easy to spot. When I drove a 1984 Monte Carlo SS...I never had problems finding my car. My mom's 1966 Olds Cutlass Supreme was easy to find.

Nowadays, more and more cars resemble each other. They are kind of boxy and unappealing, but never fear, there are ways to help your vehicle stand out in a crowd. Chack out Asanti grills and Asanti Body Styling Kits and Wheels and Rims. Your car will be styling and standing out from the crowd!

Yelling at the Television

I am not one who closely follows the news or politics. I find the news depressing. And I find the double talk of politics annoying and time wasting. I grew up in a family where I don't remember either of those things holding much importance, though my dad did watch the news every night. I don't remember my folks talking a lot about world events. Of course, I was young so maybe I just ignored it.

However, I am married to a current events man. The news is on in our home every night from 6 to 7. He surfs the web looking for news and he is very interested in politics. On Sunday, he TiVos all of his favorite 'talking heads' shows so he can see what they are saying about current events and politics. I sit here and listen to him fussing at those on the television, much like someone would fuss at a referee at a sporting event. (By the way, we don't watch sporting events...so perhaps that aggression has to go somewhere).

I often find myself shaking my head at his tirades and pointing out the fact that it's not like the people on television can hear him. He kind of glares at me and goes right back at it. It's fun for him.

Well, did ya'll know that such behavior can be contagious?

Yesterday I heard a lady talking about Hillary's run for President. She was saying how she didn't think Hillary should throw in the towel no matter how the elections turn out this coming Tuesday. And then she talked about how the media had been saying things about Hillary that they weren't saying about the men candidates. She mentioned how they were discussing Hillary's hair....

WHAT! I didn't even hear the next part she said. Does she not remember the numerous conversations and hits that John Edwards has taken over his perfectly coiffed hair? And so I found myself yelling at this imbecile on television. I told her that if the public opinion of the Democratic party was for Obama, then Hillary should step down and not split the party further. It she loves the party as she claims, then she should see the harm that is being done to it and will be done to it if the super delegates ignore what the people want and nominate her instead. And she should also be paying attention to the fact that the longer it takes for the Democrats to nominate someone, the more time McCain has to talk without too much opposition. If I was a Democrat, I would want my party to do everything it could to make sure a Democrat got into office and that may mean stepping down so the party can unite.

Anyway...as I am fussing at this lady on television, I catch my husband grinning at me. He has infected me with his madness...oh dear, now whatever shall I do?

Where Oh Where Did The Weekend Go?

Wow, here it is 9:30 pm on Sunday night and I haven't blogged today! What did I do today..well, this morning I got up and put away last night's dishes, folded two loads of laundry, read the weekly Bedford paper (that came out on Thursday), made blueberry muffins and put supper in the crockpot.

Then it was off to church. Today, I went to an orientation class where I learned a little bit more about the church we are now attending. I did this during my normal Sunday School time. I like Sunday School, but I wish we were following a different book - one that invited more questions and participation. I learn best that way.

Then after church, we came home with a friend for Katrina to play with for the afternoon. I fixed lunch. Then Daniel and I watched the movie Stripes while I worked on the last baby blanket I have lined up to make. I am close to finishing, but didn't get it completed today. I had never seen the movie Stripes. It is a bawdy movie and the humor really didn't strike me as that funny, but it is a movie from a different time and perhaps, the humor simply didn't translate that well through the ages.

Then tonight we had Awanas. There is a new little fellow in our class. We are trying to help him get used to just being in a setting where he listens, takes turns and sits in a seat. He threw quite a tantrum at the beginning, but I at least got him to calm down before we went and looked for his dad. His dad had to come into the class last week too. But he left earlier this week. I think a few more times and we will have it working fine.

Then the kids and I came home and I read them a few chapters of The Marvelous Land of Oz. Now we are going to turn in early for a change as we have a busy week ahead. I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend and will have an excellent week!

Scary Moments

I love to be scared. I always have. And I know I am not alone. What is it that makes us want to hide under the covers? To watch movies and read books that make us want to sleep with the light on? I know there are many who do not share my desire to be scared, but for those of you that do, why do you think it is? Do you think that we like being scared by make believe monsters because it helps us to forget the real monsters in our modern day society? Think back to your childhood and the ghost stories told around the campfire...we weren't thinking of real life monsters, we were just thinking if we could come up with a story to make others jump (and ourselves too).

Over the years, there have been movie moments and books that have left their mark. Scary moments that I can remember and I thought I would share some with you. Perhaps you would like to do the same.

These are in no particular order.

1. I read Dracula (a juvenilized version) when I was about 8 years old. I remember one night waking up and seeing long, thin, white fingers creeping towards me across my sheets. I screamed...turned out it was a trick of the light and the lay of the sheet. But I still remember!

2. The Blob, Cat People, Dracula, Dark Shadows...these were all shows I was watching when I was young. My mom liked them and let me watch them with her. Nightmares often followed. But I went back for more.

3. The movie Poltergeist...the scene where the clown comes out from under the bed. My best friend and I were in a theater. I was expecting the moment, but then she jumped and screamed and that made me jump and scream too. Of course, that's part of the fun of seeing a scary movie in a theater, right?

4. The movie Nightmare on Elm Street freaked me out. The idea that scary things from our dreams could come out and grab us...now that is a unique concept! After the movie, my date and I walked out the back exit. As I looked behind the screen at the metal infrastructure, I was sure that Freddy was coming for me! It was a scary moment.

5. When I was in high school, I was home reading a book about The Boston Strangler. I didn't realize how much this real life story was scaring me until the phone rang and I just about jumped through the ceiling! I guess I thought the Strangler was calling!

6. The Ring I loved that movie! And the girl walking towards you with her long dripping hair covering her face...still gives me the heebie jeebies!

So, for those of you who...

enjoy the racing pulse
have jumped involuntarily
have slept with lights on
have jumped into your bed so that whatever was under there couldn't grab you
have walk/ran down a dark hallway or sidewalk,

I would love to hear what has scared you. Not real frights like a sick child, someone breaking in, or something like that. I want to know what movies or books have left you peering anxioulsy into the night. I am always looking for my next scare!

New Car Means More Mail

When my mom and stepfather purchased me a 2003 Xterra in January, it came as a huge surprise and blessing to our family. We have enjoyed driving it and we no longer have to worry everytime we go out if we will be coming home in a cab or a rental car. My poor Caprice was getting old and tired, and after having clocked in over 180,000 miles, it had a right to.

I have only owned one brand new car in my life and that was a 1989 Mitsubishi Precis. A cute little car, great on gas, but was totaled when a gal rear ended us when she should was trying to reach a dropped cell phone.

This car is only the second car that we have purchased from a dealer. All other cars have been purchased from private citizens. Let me tell you first that the service from the dealership is very nice. They even give me every other oil change for free and my car inspections are free and every fifth oil change, they give my Xterra a good cleaning over.

What they neglect to mention is the mail that will come. Now I don't know if the dealership sells the lists or if companies troll for new purchases via the DMV, but I have been getting all kinds of mail since the Xterra came to live with us. We have gotten 1/2 dozen offers of car insurance, offers from dealerships with deals off of new cars (guess they figure I might need two new cars in my driveway), and offers from local auto detailers and stereo installers...

I really didn't know that a tree would be chewed up as part of my cost of getting a vehicle! Did you?

Book Review: Duma Key by Stephen King

I have been reading the work of Stephen King since the late 1970s/early 1980s. I can't tell you the first book I read, probably Carrie. But once I read the first book, I was hooked. And I have read every book Stephen King has written. When I heard of his accident, I was terrified. Terrified that there would be no more stories. Terrified that the man who was a master at scaring me, a master at storytelling wouldn't survive a senseless accident, wouldn't continue to share his talents with the rest of the world.

But he overcame his injuries and continues to share his imagination with his Constant Readers, the millions and millions of us that are out there. Out of all of Stephen King's novels, I have two favorites. It and The Stand. I like the epicness of them. The scariness of them. Their vastness and the details. I find the characters gripping and The Stand was the first end of the world novel I have ever read. I still find it to be a gripping tale.

Now, these two have to share their favorite status with Duma Key - Stephen King's latest work. This book flows. The story starts off quickly, whereas often, King's novels can take 100 pages for the 'excitement' to begin. Duma Key is a fresh new idea. It takes place in a fresh location. And I couldn't put it down today. I had to know how it was all going to turn out.

Edgar Freemantle and Stephen King have a lot in common. Both have survived horrible accidents against the odds. And both have a magic that affects others. In some ways, this work seems a bit autobiographical.

Check it out and see what you think!

Mr. King, should you happen by my humble review, I just want to thank you. One of the most fabulous treasures in this life is a good story. Thank you for providing us with so many of them!
