Mark Warner Lost My Vote...

| | Comments (10) | TrackBacks (0)

I am not a party voter. I have voted for Democrats, Republicans and even 'third party' candidates like Ross Perot. The way I roll is to vote for the person that I think will do the best job.

For instance, I am voting for John McCain and Sarah Palin. I don't think Obama has the country's best interests at heart. I think he is naive and is likely to make some very costly mistakes because of it. I would love to have a national health care plan, but that is not enough to make me vote for a man I just don't feel comfortable with having as President.

On the other hand, I had decided to vote for Mark Warner. I didn't want Mark Warner to be governor, but I felt like he did a good job when he was Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. He brought a lot of business into the state and helped areas of the state that had been hard hit economically as they tried to move from old standbys (like tobacco) into the new century. The last Saturday of September, I was working with Jack and Katrina at a youth fundraiser booth in Bedford for Centerfest. I looked up at a man who stopped by and was shaking hands with people in our booth, then I realized it was Mark Warner! How cool! He said something to me to the effect of 'are you trying to get people to stop by from both sides of the fence?' because I was wearing a McCain sticker and a Warner sticker. I talked with him and the reporters following him and explained that I voted on the person, not the party they were running with. Another gal in my booth said the same thing, though she wasn't voting for Warner.

Today, a gal sent a link to my homeschool email list regarding a political ad. First, that is a no-no on our list because we don't discuss politics or religion on our list. We keep things friendly. But, I know why she sent it. It was of importance to homeschoolers. I saw the title of the link and went to check it out. This video is what I found. As a homeschooler, a person of faith, and the daughter of a NRA member, I am appalled to see what Mark Warner really thinks of me.

Mr. Warner, you have lost my vote. I can only hope the word gets round to the other people like me in the Commonwealth as to what you really think. And Mr. Warner, in case you are at all concerned...I believe the very people that you say are threatening what it means to be an American are indeed the ones that are trying to keep America on the track that used to make it a beloved country around the world. And Mr. Warner, I have many homeschool friends that sit on both sides of the political spectrum. I cannot begin to imagine how they will feel that you have lumped them in with people that they are often opposed to.

Big foot in mouth moment, but thanks for your honesty. I would have hated to have voted for you and found out your opinions when it was too late.

I have to say, I am shocked he said it, though it is something I can understand believing.

The Christian Coalition scares the crap out of me. It's a (Falwellian) attempt, which they admit, to dominate the country with Christian ideals. And when you consider that 75% of American home-schoolers are Evangelicals that profess the same intentions, I think it is safe to lump them in together.

So while I think I should be able to buy the guns I like, and I know that not all home-schoolers are crazy - I still agree with Warner.

However, I don't think he should have said that publicly. (Given the quality of the recording, I'm not sure he was.) Personally, I'll lump it in with something Obama said about poor people clinging to guns and religion. I agree with it, because I've seen it first-hand, but it's not the nicest thing to say. At least these are things that slipped out once - conversationally - and aren't the foundations of their reasonings and campaigns.

These comments were made by Mr. Warner in 1994. I agree that he shouldn't have made them, but let's cut the guy some slack. He said this 14 years ago. His record as governor has shown that he's above that now and has done more to show how he really thinks.

Like you said, he did a great job as governor and did nothing to hold people like us back. Let's take what he's done in the last five years, rather than something he said 14 years ago.

Thanks, Joe for commenting. I didn’t realized the comments were made so long ago. That does make a difference to me because I thought he did an excellent job as governor. When I saw the video, I was thinking it was a much more recent attitude and that was definitely disturbing. In 1994, I thought homeschoolers were all kooks, but I don’t believe that anymore. I am very aware that people’s perception can change.

Thanks for letting me know!

I would suggest that Mark Warner's beliefs are not quite as far different as they were in 1994. At the most recent debate, Warner said he opposed Justices like Roberts, Alito, Thomas and Scalia saying that they were "out of touch with the mainstream". Aside from the simple fact that Supreme Court Justices are not supposed to be in ANY stream, rather to read the law, it is a clear idea of his positions. He opposes the very same Justices who upheld the true meaning of the Second Amendment. He opposes the Justices who believe abortion is never once mentioned in the Constitution.

How are his beliefs any different?

Just something I've noticed.

I apologize for continuously filling your comments, but it should also be noted that when these same allegations were brought up in the Richmond Times Dispatch, Gov. Warner said it was a lie and that he never said it.

If his positions had changed, why did he claim he had never said it? At that point it's an issue of trust. How can we trust someone who will say one thing, and then simply lie to the people and claim he never did.

I am getting so sick of politics. No politician is truthful. They tell us what we want to hear. I can't wait until after the elections, although I am terrified about what will happen if Obama wins. I am also sick of people calling people who believe what I believe ignorant and blind. Sigh... There is so much going on in the country right now. I just wish people would have some common sense. Anyway, that's my rant, even if it doesn't make sense. :-)

Re: Barack Obama, I lived in IL until last year, and I can tell you that Obama began running for president very soon after he was elected senator. He did very little in the Senate, voting present way too often. Back when he was an IL state rep, he voted against letting babies who survive abortions live. You're on the right track not voting for him. I'm not voting for him either. If the national media would pay attention to what's going on with Obama's cronies in Chicago, the truth would come out.

Melissa,

Thanks for your post. Mark Warner claimed that he never said these things to the Richmond Dispatch. I don't know whether you are conservative or liberal but he is also strongly pro-abortion. He has said he would not support Justices like Scalia and Thomas which means he probably would probably not support Alito and Roberts either. Those judges are the most pro Second Amendment, Pro School Choice, ProLife judges on the courts. If you value Home Schooling, the Second Amendment, and the constitution as written then you should be wary of Mark Warner. He also opposed the Virginia Marriage Amendment and contributed money to stop the definition of marriage as being a Man and a Woman.

Mark Warner also received a "D" rating from the Cato institute on his fiscal policy as Governor.
He increased spending and increased taxes and while he does have some redeeming value we are experiencing the results of his increased spending and tax raises today with the prospects of cuts and a 9 billion dollar shortfall.

Mark Warner if you are a Christian, a conservative or believe government is too big is not the one for you.

Check it out for yourself. You sound like a smart women not to be fooled by a man who thinks putting on a hunting jacket and going on a shoot with some country folk makes him a moderate.

Please consider your choice and vote your values.

Mark Warner may have said those things in 1994, but he has never renounced saying them nor apologized to the groups of people whom he derided. Nothing indicates that he has changed his view one bit. He said this in private where he didn't think anyone from the general public would ever learn of them. That's why he lied for the past 14 years about saying this.

Yes, it is absolutely to take a closer look at Mark Warner who is a man from a laboring class who makes many claims which could lead one to believe he has those values. BUT, WAIT A MINUTE AND LOOK AT HOW ORDINARY (including cheating on his wife when she was abroad with his children-------see his early late night-early morning persuits in Washington, DC reported by a writer who spotted him). BUT WAIT ANOTHER MINUTE ----- he ignored the extensive corruption in his home town public school in Alexandria, Virginia (and simply sent his own children to private school).....now, is that impressive enough??? Further, he ignores specific corruption in his hometown Public Schools jurisdiction, ALEXANDRIA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS. ALEXANDRIA CITY PUBLIC SCHOOLS HAS BEEN REPORTED IN FORBES MAGAZINE AS THE MOST COSTLY AND the least results(yes, Mr. Warner ignores specific information provided but will say he arranged a "study of ACPS" but that study did not investigate pertinent information brought to his attention: HE SIMPLY REFUSES TO GET INVOLVED AND IT IS SOOOO NOTICEABLE THAT HE DOES NOT TALK ABOUT OUR SCHOOLS AND OUR CHILDREN'S EDUCATION in VIRGINIA!!!! MOVE ASIDE MR. Warner, and let education become important in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
