Chicago Trip 2009 Day 5 Words, Photos, and Videos

Well, today we slept in a little, then we headed out at about 11:00. First we ate lunch at McDonald's, then we headed for the subway/El. It was our first time ever riding it and we were excited and nervous.

After about an hour which included figuring out how to get our passes for the subway and the ride, we arrived at our transfer point - the Rosemont Station. Then we got on a bus and headed to Woodfield Mall. And lastly, we took a trolley and were delivered to the front door of LegoLand Chicago Discovery Center.

It was really cool and you see photos of the amazing sculptures we found there by visiting my flickr page.

We saw a miniature Chicago made with Legos:

We rode through a medieval castle in a dragon car:

And we got this great photo of ourselves!

We saw how Legos were made and we played with Legos. The kids rode the technicycle.

Then we headed back to downtown Chicago. What a wonderful adventure!

Chicago Trip 2009 Day 4 Words

It was a cold and stormy day...well it was! Honest!

So, we survived the massive amounts of rain and enjoyed our time at the Adler Planetarium and the Field Museum. The lake almost looked like an ocean yesterday as the waves were a bit on the high side. We did enjoy eating lunch at Galileo's Cafe in the Adler Planetarium and looking out over the lake. I am sure it is an absolutely gorgeous view on a clear day.

I only took a couple of photos yesterday and no video. So it is words only this go round. We enjoyed the telescope exhibit at Adler. I particularly enjoyed looking at the old books on display (where scientists had drawn pictures of their idea of the galaxy) and the lovely old telescopes. My favorite was one made out of ivory and if anyone wants to talk to the Planetarium and see if you can get it for me for Christmas.... haha...only kidding! We enjoyed seeing how old we would be and how much we would weigh if we were on other planets and we had a good time trying to make 6 planets orbit the sun for 20 seconds...not as easy as you would think. We watched two shows...one called Cosmic Collisions and the other was Skywatchers of Africa. Both were very good, though the one shown in the planetarium left me with neck strain.

Next we headed to the Field Museum and first let me say, we did not do it justice. You could easily spend a whole day there and we had less than 3 hours. Our first exhibit we wanted to see was Real Pirates (which I was a little dismayed to discover wasn't covered on the Chicago Pass...it was considered an 'extra' exhibit) oh well... It was an excellent exhibit and took us over an hour to go through. We could have spent longer, but the rush of humanity that was in there made you feel pushed to move on and not linger. The exhibit covered the ship the Whydah and its history before and after the pirate Sam Bellamy got ahold of it. Seeing things that hadn't been touched for hundreds of years was awesome!

We visited a carved building that honored a hero (whose name I don't remember how to spell) and came from New Zealand. We walked through the Egyptian exhibit and through the underground exhibit we had seen before (where we got shrunk). It was just so much to see and we were very tired at that point.

So we headed home and got dinner at a nearby grocery store that I discovered yesterday. And then we just hung out in the room and read and relaxed.

Today we are heading out for a secret, undisclosed location that promises to be lots of fun. More on that later!

Chicago Trip 2009 Day 3 Words, Photos, and Video

Yesterday we went to visit Shedd Aquarium...in the rain. Yep, we have hit some major rain here in Chicago. In fact, looks like it will be raining again today...

But, since we drove and have the Xterra, we are prepared. I have rain ponchos stored in the back! After breakfast, we found our bus stop and headed to the Museum Campus. We were delighted to be riding on a Clean Air Hybrid Bus which was recently purchased by the city of Chicago with stimulus funds...our tax dollars at work! It should make a huge difference in the air quality here in Chicago as well.

We spent the day at the Shedd Aquarium enjoying the sights of the lovely fish.

Here are some highlights:

One, my flip camera is so awesome! I can take videos of these lovely sea creatures that before I couldn't get a good photo of due to the glass and the water combination. My favorites: jellyfish and seadragons. You can see them too in the video below.

Katrina enjoyed the watching the penguins and playing in the penguin cove. It was love at first sight!

Jack got to add another water bubble thingy to his collection. We also discovered that there is kerosene inside of these things!!!!! One fell to the concrete floor and broke (even though it was plastic). Nasty!

The other fun thing we did was watch Planet Earth (about 10 minutes) in 4D. Nothing like feeling the cold breeze of the arctic wind or feeling the spray of the ocean!

Chicago Trip 2009 Days 1 and 2 Videos

It's always fun to see the videos and get moment by moment action...so here are three from yesterday! Enjoy!

Jack and Katrina share their views...

Katrina will do anything for a buck!

Ahhh....Hershey's....

Chicago Trip 2009 Days 1 and 2 Photos and Words

Well, we left Virginia yesterday before 8 a.m. We had a pretty uneventful drive. I drove in the morning and Daniel drove in the afternoon and evening. A highlight of the day was we took an exit looking for a promised BP station. We never did find the BP station, but we drove through a beautiful section of Kentucky and saw some amazing homes and beautiful horses. I don't believe I have ever seen such magnificent homes outside of Newport, Rhode Island.

We stopped in Indiana so Daniel could get a haircut (didn't want him looking shaggy for the conference) and we had dinner. We later stayed at a Holiday Inn Express and I tell you that staying there is a great deal for the money. Free internet. Free breakfast. Clean and comfy rooms.

Today we drove the rest of the way into Chicago. I was thinking about driving us around here for the places we are to visit. The drive in was enough to convince me to forget it. I am not qualified for city driving! After we got settled in, we are staying at the Hyatt Regency where the conference is, Daniel went to the conference, and we walked a bit south for a McDonald's (and found a food court). After lunch, the kids and I walked North up Michigan Avenue (also called the Mile with tons of great places to shop). We were headed to the Hancock Tower and saw many strange and wonderful things along the way.

A very tall, traveling old couple!

Then there was the metal moose...don't ask, because I don't know!

I believe I enjoyed our time at the top of the Hancock building more than the Sears Tower last year. We enjoyed a complimentary cup of coffee (courtesy of our Chicago Passes) and we bought a couple of items in the gift shop and just really enjoyed learning about Chicago. We were up there for about 90 minutes, or maybe 2 hours, I wasn't really keeping track. It wasn't very crowded and the audio tour was awesome! I chose to listen to the kids version because kids' tours always give the best information.

While at the top of the Hancock Tower, we enjoyed looking at the beautiful Lake Michigan and it was neat how small Navy Pier looked from our vantage point.

Off to the left of Navy Pier and the filtration area, there was this roundish looking building. I wanted to know what it was, but it wasn't mentioned on the tour. I zoomed as much as I could, but couldn't really get a good picture. It looked to me like a Merry Go Round out in the middle of the lake (Katrina thought the same thing, separately from me). Finally I went up to the desk to ask because I just had to know...

It is a pumping station that goes with the water filtration area. It pumps water out of the lake for the people of Chicago to drink. I like my idea better. Wouldn't it be cool to have a Merry-Go-Round in the middle of the lake that you could only get to by boat???

As we were getting ready to leave, I couldn't find Katrina (this is a frequent happening) and I about had a heart attack when I did find her...

She kept pointing that it was a long way down as she worked hard to clean those windows!

We left there and stopped in Borders (it is the first time I have been in a Borders and I was really amazed!!!!!). We picked up the newest Daniel X book, then headed to Hershey's. Well, we had to go after we ran into the Kiss out on the Mile. Then we headed to the Chicago Tribune building.

We had learned while on our tour that reporters used to bring back pieces of places they had visited (i.e. a piece of the Great Wall of China, a piece of the Forbidden Temple in China, a piece of the Berlin Wall...). And these pieces are embedded in the outside of the building. It was really cool!

So, now we are back in the room and it is dinner time. More later...I have some videos to share too:)

Week of August 17th in Review

Well, this past week was another busy one, but busy at home getting odds and ends done.

Things like mowing the lawn. I actually really enjoyed that. There are benefits to only mowing once a month. My grass is greener than most of my neighbors. Also, when I mow, I can really tell that the yard looks mowed and it looks sooooo nice! That's because some of the weeds were two and three feet tall, then in other places were only a few inches tall. That's because our yard is a hodgepodge of really good grass and some really happy weeds!

I also managed to finish making signs for the youth group bake sale we are having on September 5th from 7-12 at Lancer Mart at the corner of 24 and 122. Come by and get some yummy goods and say hi!

I am up to my final year in my video to DVD project. I am glad to see the light at the end of that tunnel. It has been fun watching the videos, but it has also been very time consuming.

We had our first 4-H class this week and the kids and I are all very excited about doing some gardening over the next year. I am sorry that we are going to miss the next two classes due to being in Australia, but I am very excited about what else we will be doing.

In other news with my youth group fundraising, we have been working on getting people to sign up their MVP cards over the last three Sundays, so we could register our Youth Group with Food Lions Share program. It is awesome. We had to have at least 25 people and we got about 35! Yippee! Not bad for a little church! We have the potential to bring in 350.00 every three months just with these cards.

I got to watch some movies this week too. Daniel had watched several while he was in Illinois and I am now trying to catch up. I watched The Knowing which I really, really liked, though I wished for a different ending. I watched PUSH which I also liked a lot. I watched The first part of Aristocrats (courtesy of Netflix) which I really enjoyed. I watched Valkyrie which was better than I thought it would be (I am not a big Tom Cruise fan). It is a shame that what they tried to do didn't work out... the war would have ended sooner and who knows how many lives would have been saved? I watched The Reader with Kate Winslett. Another interesting movie, if a bit slow and parts didn't make a lot of sense to me and if you don't want nudity, stay clear of this movie. And we watched Taken (the new one with Liam Neeson). Another excellent movie. Liam is always a joy to watch and I enjoyed watching the gal who played Shannon on LOST in another role (though it took me awhile to recognize her with her brown hair). I kept thinking...I know this girl, I know this girl...

Well, that's this past week wrapped up with a bow. I probably forgot some things, but those are the highlights! We are now packed up and ready to head to Chicago. Daniel will be speaking at an Agile conference and the kids and I will be kicking back and sightseeing.

Eight Days in Review

Well, time has sped by again and I have been busy filling every minute of it. When last I left you, gentle reader (I have been reading Stephen King's newest endeavor: UR)... I had spent the first Friday evening of August with Charles, and later Bruce and Ryan as a celebration of my birthday. Things have continued to move along since.

I have spent pretty much every spare minute working on my video copying project. Last week I finished transferring the home movies on VHS to DVDs. Now I am transferring video from DVD RAM camcorder that we had from 2002-2006. Then I will still have 7 disks to copy that I have made in the last year on our DVD camcorder. While the VHS copying was time consuming, I am having to teach myself a whole new skill set so I can set up segments, chapters, whatever you want to call them of these videos. It has definitely been an experience.

The weekend of the 8th and 9th were pretty quiet. We did some more work on Daniel's office. And I took care of some Youth Fundraising and 4-H items that I needed to work on. I also read some, watched some movies and went to church. These are the things I remember...of course it was a whole week ago, so what do you expect?????

The 10th was a fun day...first my yearly physical, followed in the afternoon by my yearly mammogram...phew, if I didn't deserve a calgon bath after that, I don't know when I would. Most of the tests came back fine, except it turns out my cholesterol is high...grrrr...

When I got home on the 10th, Daniel's plywood for his office had arrived. We spent a couple of hours measuring and sawing and putting the boards into the trailer so that we don't unexpectedly fall through. That was fun. Always good to feel like you are getting something accomplished. We got a few things moved back into place before we called it a night as I wanted to get to bed early because I was going to be getting up at 4 a.m. and driving to Luray, VA to attend the funeral of my Great Aunt Margie (one of my grandmother's sisters).

I don't know about you, but a lot of times when I know I have to get up really early, I don't sleep well. I think it is because I am afraid that I will oversleep. Anyway, I went to bed at 9:30 and it was 2:30 before I fell asleep. When the alarm buzzed at 4, I was pretty groggy. A shower and a stop by Sheetz helped with that and I arrived in Luray about 7:45 a.m. My Great Aunt Irma and two of my cousins, Dick and his son Richard, were out on the front porch chatting. About 30 minutes later my cousin, Candy, pulled up. We got into the vehicles and headed into the Fort Valley to the church where the funeral was to be held. About another hours drive. Before the service began, I reconnected with family that I hadn't seen anywhere from 7 years to 30 years. My great-grandmother, Zola Munch Powell Youngblood, passed away in 1977 or 1978. After her funeral, most of my extended family I didn't see again. I had a cousin, Kim, that I was close to and I would see Aunt Irma, Aunt Sam, and Aunt Margie if grandma and I visited. My grandmother passed away in 1993. I visited my Aunt Irma and Uncle Charles in 1992. I visited my cousin, Kim, and my Aunt Margie in 2002. And other than that, contact has been some letters and Christmas cards.

It was wonderful seeing family members again, even under such circumstances. My grandmother was one of 9 children. All except one, (fell from a truck and broke his neck when he was 11) made it to adulthood. Now all that are left are my Uncle Eugene (the oldest - 91) and my Aunt Irma (the youngest). There is so much history in our family. The Munch's were some of the first inhabitants in the Fort Valley and my Great Aunt Margie died in the home she had been born in. The other side of my family, was my great-grandfather, Kemper Powell who is actually from Concord, and I have been told was related to a supreme court justice of the past.

The funeral was a wonderful experience and the kind that I hope follows me when I leave this earth. My Aunt Margie was an active volunteer - the fire department, the local library and the local museum. She loved children and the children loved her. She was very active in her church. Her church is a small country church, but let me tell you, every pew was packed and there were people standing in the hallway at her funeral. The minister shared some of Aunt Margie's favorite bible verses, then allowed the congregation to share things about my Aunt Margie. There was so much I didn't know, and I keenly feel the loss of what I might have learned had I made the time to keep in touch.

Aunt Margie was an amazing woman. Her community loved her, respected her, and valued her contributions. After the funeral, we were quite an entourage as we headed for the Munch family cemetary. A fire engine led the way, but had to wait at the bottom of the steep hill as the family cemetary is at the top of a hill with limited parking. After the minister sang a song and said a few words at the grave, the fire department did something that sent chills down my spine and made the moment one that will forever be engraved in my memory.

They did something called a last call. I am paraphrasing here, but it basically went like this. The captain of the fire department called the main dispatch and requested a last call for crew member Margie Lichliter. Dispatch came back and announced last call to all units for crew 14's member Margie Lichilter and asked for a moment of silence. Static filled the airwaves followed by the mournful wail of the fire engine waiting below.

My Aunt Margie was 87 years old, and was a valuable part of her community until the day she died. In December, she had had a stroke and over the last 8 months, family and friends came by her home and did things for her so she could stay in her home. She died as she wished to, in the home of her birth, and surrounded by those who loved her. What a testament her life is to me and to all who knew her.

After the service, we went to the firehall where a meal had been prepared for family and friends. We visited for two hours and upon leaving, my cousins and I decided that we will plan a family reunion in the spring. The last one was in the early seventies when my great great grandfather Munch was still alive. We don't want to lose what treasures we have left.

Wednesday and Thursday, I was mostly home. Katrina had a friend over and I worked more on my video project and tried to begin with some straightening up of our house and worked at getting the kids to get their school work done...I even managed to slip in a couple of movies. Inheritance was particularly well done - based on a Louisa May Alcott book.

Friday, it was back to town. Jack had an orthodontist appointment. Then we killed some time and had lunch while waiting for the kids to get a flu mist at 2. Since we will be traveling in the fall, the doctor suggested we all get the flu mist to help prevent us from getting ill. I got mine on Monday. And as these are live germs, we have each had some side effects. I had a couple of days of stuffy nose and that is what Jack is dealing with now. Katrina seems to have been affected the most. A low-grade fever, achy, tired and a stuffy nose. I hope it keeps us from being really sick in the year ahead.

After our appointments, we ran a few errands and returned home.

Saturday was another busy day. First we attended a local event called Bedford Farm Day. Bedford has been doing this for several years to bring attention to the huge amount of agriculture that goes on in our county. I have always talked about going, but this is the first time we actually were able to go. We really wanted to go too as the farm being highlighted was Royal Oak Farm which backs up to our property. He began as a hog farmer, but then switched to recycling. They use compost to create prime mulch and top soil. They also haul away food wastes from a local food plant and recycle it into food for livestock. It was truly amazing. There were other farms there with booths and it was interesting learning about the agriculture that takes place in our county.

After lunch, we drove to my dad's and visited for a couple of hours. It is always good to see Dianne and Dad. Then, we drove back down the hill a little ways and attended a high school reunion. This reunion was put on by members of the class of 1986 from the High School that I attended. They opened it up to students who had graduated four years prior to that and four years after that. It was nice to see people from other classes and catch up a bit. A couple of our teachers from years past came as well and that was fun to chat with them. We didn't stay until the end, but I enjoyed the time we spent there and really appreciate the gals who worked so hard to put it together and to make it simple.

Today, we went to church and I have spent my afternoon catching up on computer things, working on transferring more videos, straightening up a bit, and copying out the Children's Bulletins for the next 2 1/2 months. I can't believe our trip is just about here! Only a month to go....

If you read all of that...you deserve a medal. I just couldn't stop, once I got started! Sorry it was a whole week of stuff crammed into one day, but that's just the way it is right now!

God bless!

Week of Birthday and Busy Days

The last week has flown by.

My 43rd birthday was last Friday. My hubby and children sang Happy Birthday to You at midnight while we were driving from Illinois to Virginia. I slept for a couple of hours that morning, but there were birthday calls to attend to and I have a hard time sleeping during the day. So I opened loads of lovely cards that had come in the mail, enjoyed reading birthday messages on Facebook, and began the unpacking process. Katrina and I got most of the stuff unloaded from the truck, but the lock on the u-haul had become jammed during the drive here. We ended up having to get bolt cutters to deal with that particular situation.

Jack and Katrina each had a gift for me that they had sneakily won at the fair. Jack presented me with a Wonder Woman doll and Katrina gave me a cute stuffed bunny and dog. Katrina also presented me with breakfast in bed and made some toll house cookies and put a candle in one for my birthday.

Friday night, we were in bed pretty early...all tuckered out!

Saturday was movie watching day. We began watching the miniseries Taken. This is the Spielberg extravaganza from about 7 years ago. I didn't get to watch all of it when it first came out because I was too dang busy with a 6 year old and a 2 year old. So, we bought it on disk and started watching. There are 10 2-hour episodes. We finally finished watching it today. I found it very intriguing but the ending left me unsatisfied. I wanted answers. Ironically the point of the whole thing was that we are all searching for answers and that is part of life.

Sunday, we attended church in the morning, did some unpacking in the afternoon, then headed to Roanoke to meet Bruce, Ryan, Charles and Joann. Daniel took us all to the Outback Steak House in honor of my birthday. It was most yummy and Bruce gave me the beginnings of a trollbead bracelet. I hadn't heard of troll beads, but Bruce said they are the big thing in jewelry right now. If you haven't heard from them, think a new take on charm bracelets. I like these a little better though as the charms don't hang down and get caught on things. He bought me a bracelet and a two beads - one a blue bead with a gold stripe in it and the other is a lion (I am a Leo). I spent about an hour yesterday perusing their site and making a wish list of the other beads I would like to have. The guys are happy to have this help when it come to gift time!)

After we ate dinner, Charles told me he wanted to take me to see a movie on Friday and we would talk later in the week about it.

Monday, I had to go to the grocery store. Also did more unpacking and sorting. I also received a birthday present from my next door neighbor. A lovely candle, red linen napkins for special occasions and a neat piece of chocolate cake that is a decoration, not something to eat (much better for the waist line!)

Tuesday, we met my mom at Cold Stone Creamery for lunch. It's an annual ritual. We visited, then I took the kids to piano lessons and mom and I met up at Barnes and Noble and visited some more while the kids were playing piano. We really need to do this more often. Mom and I both have very busy schedules and don't see one another near as much as we would like. We have to work on this. I received another birthday present today. My friend, Dotti Enderle, sent me the complete set of her Ghost Detectors series. These books are a great read for youngsters who like ghostly stories that aren't too scary and the binding is superb (as are the illustrations). For me the really cool thing is that Dotti mentions my name in the dedication as I helped her by reading through and passing on some comments on each of the books. But, I would tell you you should go out and buy these books even if my name wasn't in them because they are good! Dotti is a wonderful storyteller!

Wednesday, I spent most of the day helping Daniel with cleaning the office and moving things around. We took two loads of stuff in my Xterra to the Goodwill and three loads in the Jeep to the dumpster (fortunately, one load was completely recyclable). We made a good dent in it, but also realized that we had to buy some plywood to put down on the floor in the main room (long story, but basically the floor of that old trailer is rotting out from under our feet.) We are putting downt the plywood so we don't fall through and to help squeeze a little more life out of the trailer/office.

Thursday, the kids had a monster group piano lesson. I dropped them off at 9 and went to Barnes and Noble and read a book and enjoyed a cup of coffee. I also perused the bargain section and purchased a couple of books...dang I love books! Then I picked up some of the kids from the group lesson as I was one of the chauffers and we headed over to Valley View Retirement Center. The children put on a concert for several of the residents. It was wonderful for both sides. You can hear Jack and Katrina by clicking on the videos below. After the recital, we had lunch as a group at Vinny's pizza. I hadn't been there before, but I am going to have to go back!

After we were done at Vinny's, we stopped in Lowe's. My dad and Dianne had sent me a $50 Lowe's gift card for my birthday. I used it to buy a new air purifier for our bedroom. We have had one for years, and can no longer get filters for it (they just don't make them anymore), plus it was a little the worse for wear after having fallen off of its perch several times. The new one is much nicer looking and quieter. Got home and helped Daniel empty the main room in preparation for our plywood delivery on Friday.

Friday morning came bright and early with a phone call that the Lowe's truck had broken down... and they couldn't deliver til Monday! Bummer, dude! Gave me time to work on my video to DVD project I have been working on. I am making good progress on that and the kids and I got some school work done, then I left home around 2 for my date...

Charles took me to see The Orphan (I got to pick the movie and I have to say I really liked it). I kept thinking about the movie The Good Son while watching it, until towards the end when there was a big surprise and everything changed! Afterwards, we met Bruce and Ryan at Abuelo's for some delicious Mexican food. It was fun for me to go out alone with the boys and visit with them. I thought it was really sweet of Charles to arrange it and we are going to try and have more movie dates in the future. When I got home, it was about 9 and we watched a Kolchak episode out on our improvised movie screen on the deck. All in all, a lovely week!
